Jeremy Renner Hoping To Explore Hawkeye More in ‘The Avengers 2′

The Avengers successfully brought together the core roster of Marvel Studios cinematic heroes into an epic blockbuster that became the third biggest box office success of all-time. While director Joss Whedon was able to balance precious screen time and a multitude of story arcs between the likes of Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk and Thor – characters who all had a chance to shine in their own solo origins films beforehand – the same cannot be said of the non-powered heroes.

Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow had a starring role in Iron Man 2 before joining The Avengers, but for Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye, his introduction was limited to a short cameo in Thor. With a chance to finally delve into the character in The Avengers, Renner was none too pleased that Whedon’s script never gave him the opportunity to play character he signed on for.

In an interview with Hero Complex three months after the record-breaking release of The Avengers, Renner spoke honestly about the film and his limited role in it, highlighting the fact that the plot had his character essentially become a mindless grunt up until the final act and action set piece.

“At the end of the day, 90% of the movie, I’m not the character I signed on to play. I’m literally in there for two minutes, and then all of a sudden… All I could really work on was the physical part of it all, because that didn’t change. That was just the biggest challenge to overcome in playing the guy. Also, we’re pretty much introducing a new superhero character to everyone in a movie where there’s a thousand superheroes. So there’s not a lot of back story or understanding we can really tell about who Clint Barton is, or Hawkeye, and is he working for SHIELD or not. There’s a lot of unanswered questions, even for me. And I was OK with that. At least I was still in the movie. And I was glad for that. The closest thing I could really link to was Scarlett [Johansson's] character, Black Widow, because they have a history. And that definitely plays in the movie, I think. And obviously, you can’t go into too much just because there’s so much story to tell, but you definitely get a sense that they’re connected, and that there’s something really, really important that ties them together. And I could try to summarize it, but it can go a lot of places. That excites me, though, that there’s room for other things.”

While Scarlett Johansson will get to explore more of the backstory behind Natasha Romanoff AKA Black Widow in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Renner may not get a chance to return to the big screen as SHIELD Agent Clint Barton AKA Hawkeye until The Avengers 2 releases in the summer of 2015. Despite Marvel President of Production Kevin Feige teasing potential Marvel Studios spinoffs for the two, it’s rather safe to say that – like Black Widow – the Hawkeye character will never get a solo film.

What does that mean for the story of Clint Barton and star Jeremy Renner? In chatting with MTV, Renner essentially confirms his (obvious) return and is hopeful that the second time around, the script for The Avengers 2 will let him play character he was pitched before signing on. In Marvel Comics, Hawkeye is more of a lone wolf, often clashing with the other members of The Avengers.

“It’s what he was able to do with the first one. Now, there’s more opportunities to explore the characters a little more, I think, for everybody. I think that’s exciting.”

Renner stresses that he’s not trying to offer suggestions or make demands, jokingly admitting he’d “screw things all up.” That being said, Hawkeye’s history in the books seems to lend itself well with what Whedon has been touting for the sequel, a film which he describes as more personal, not as “happy.”

“The creation of the team is not the happy ending. It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult, and now I get to dig a little deeper. And maybe, while I’m digging, just twist that knife. And that’s exciting for me.”

With potentially even more characters joining the fray for The Avengers 2, Whedon and co. have a challenge ahead of meeting lofty expectations and letting so many different characters have their chance to shine. Would you like to see more Hawkeye in Phase Two of the Marvel cinematic universe and should his role be expanded in The Avengers sequel?

Iron Man 3 releases May 3, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015 and Ant-Man on November 6, 2015.

  1. I love it when an actor shows this kind of enthusiasm when it comes to a role. I hope to see more from him as Hawkeye

    • I agree completely JK!!

      • I agree 1000000000000000000 times guys. I am a fan of Hawkeye and I have a man crush of Renner because I find I’m so awesome. I noticed that there wasn’t a lot of Hawkeye in the movie and like Renner I can understand how hard it is to basically introduce the character in such a massive movie I’m sure Whedon will show more emotion from Hawkeye and I know for a fact that Renner is the man to play it out.

        • AGREE!!!

  2. Im not a big comic book reader so with that in mind I would not mind knowing a little bit of his story! Does that mean I want a bigger role for him in the avengers 2? NOT REALLY, because that will take away from, what seems now will be a team up with GOTG and the avengers so there will not be much room for a Hawkeye backstory in there! I really think they should do some kind of short films with Renner, He will get his backstory without marvel shelling out 100 million on a hawkeye movie! Make them 15minutes long and let them out in between there feature films, They could even put something in there with Black Widow, BUT I DO NOT SEE A FEATURE FILM! UNLESS IT IS Black widow’s and Hawkeyes movie, That might not be bad we can knock out 2 characters with one movie and keep your actors happy AND I DO THINK that with marvels Reputation right now that they could make a PROFIT! MAYBE NOT A 100 million dollar profit but a profit nonetheless… I would pay to see it just because Marvel has not let me down yet!

    • Why dont you read? if you cant go to a shop (which I dont) you can go to Marvel digital comics or comixology and just start reading comics from year 2000 start with Wikipedia then avengers disassembled. its not hard to figure out what you want to read or not just wiki a character find a story arc and start reading.

      • He, I wish I had the time to read! The few minutes I get to myself a day I check this site, I may comment a bit and my e mail and thats it dude! it is now 2:07 am and I get up for work at 6am dont get home till 5pm and I have a wife and 3 kids so I dont really have the time to read comics, Oh yeah a house, and other crap that takes up the rest of my time! Comics are way way way way down that list, any extra freetime I have is usually spent with my wife that I see for a totall of 2 hrs a day in between all the projects and kids! 48 weeks a year I work 7 days a week so for some ppl just picking up a comic or going to the comic book shop is just not in the cards! All of the CBM I have seen have ALL been with my kids, so that is kind of my extent of CB material! I would much rather spend the time watching the movies with my kids than reading a comic book ANYTIME!!! We all cant live in a fantasy world, bills need to be paid and UNLIKE MOST PARENTS I TRY TO RAISE MY KIDS WITH SOME SENSE OF FAMILY AND MORALS!!

        • Wow I was trying to be nice. You dont have to be a pretentious dick about it. I dont care if you have kids or about your life. Thanks for trying to insult a 20 somthing kid who does what he enjoys in between college classes. If your gonna come here and comment on somthing about comics then dont attack people that actually do read them. You just contradict yourself and insult the people that actually have fun with them. im glad to have my fantasy world then have to insult and live in misery like you.

          • maybe you should think about getting your kids an account then you can pretend its for them and come on here and express your opinions about cbms that you supposedly dont have any interest in. Poser

        • He has plenty of time to write these novels….

          • Hmm…

I never saw Slappy as being a “pretentious dick” at all, he was just stating he doesn’t have time to read and prefers finding out about characters by watching the movies with his kids.

You on the other hand sound like one of those “pretentious dicks” who purchases Halo and Gears Of War novels and when people like me who only wish to lay the videogames for the main part of the story come in not knowing much about what led to the videogame, just get insulted and “learn2read” style comments.

Yes, you tried to be nice but then when he explained pretty reasonably why he wasn’t able to do that, you went off with two comments that showed total immaturity on your part.

            • Um, yeah. Writing stuff like this in mostly CAPS “We all cant live in a fantasy world, bills need to be paid and UNLIKE MOST PARENTS I TRY TO RAISE MY KIDS WITH SOME SENSE OF FAMILY AND MORALS!!” is a good way to come off like a pretentious dick. And he did… wonderfully. He could of just said he had a busy and full life and left it as that.

              • I am really sorry guys, I honestly did not mean anything by it! I did deserve to called a dick! but i am sorry! I did not mean that anyone on here is not capable of raising kids or that they waste their time on comics, because I really do like a bunch of the guys on this site, so I did not mean to offend any of you! I should have worded it differently for sure, so I really am apologizing to everyone on here and I hope you all accept it! To the kid (tankd) in college from last night, I did not mean to snap at you and I just took what you were saying the wrong way! THANK YOU FOR THE INFO you gave me!!! I really am sorry dude!!

Dazz Thank You too, that is exactly all I was trying to do!!

                • Its cool man If I came off the same way I didnt mean to. so Im sorry as well. I was just trying to share how I got into comics because I may be young but I didnt get into them until a couple of years ago and I just think its a good starting off point if anyone has some free time on their hands and doesnt know where to begin.. And at dazz I kinda take that as a compliment in the way that if Im ever truly interested in something I want to now as much as I can about it. In all things not just geeky stuff. But your right I was defensive and I apologize. But I’ve never read the GoW or halo novels. I also apologize for my typing style. I should try to be an example for my gens illiteracy but hey if aint a crime I dont mind…

                  • know not now**

  3. I hope he gets a solo film. he deserves it.

    • I was thinking the exact same thing. Maybe divulge into some flashbacks into the history of him and BW.
Hawkeye’s history is pretty interesting IMO so to lead up to where we were would be a cool back story movie.
Just make sure Renner works on his Archery form because having to use 2 arm guards doesnt show that he is such a great archer!

      • I think it would be great to do that. But in all honesty to give him some more “superhero” credit with main stream audiences they should include the program from the ultimate universe that explains why Hawkeye can put that arrow anywhere he wants which would explain his lack of form. Renner actually commented about how bow purists didnt approve of his lack of form and he responded by saying hes a super hero he doesnt need all the complex stuff he can just put the projectile where it needs to go. I think it would be good if they made him have some sort of augmentation to explain his talents.

        • or they can go with the classic raised by the circus bit, if he was trained from a young age, combined with natural ability, he would learn to do it in any position of form he liked, or even a lack of form. just a thought

    • :)

  4. I actually thought he got too much time in avengers.

  5. The Hawkeye I remember (and I’m very Old School – I’ve been out of continuity and the loop since the early 1990′s) is a barely reformed criminal. A smart ass. A flirt (with the ladies). He dislikes authority and came close to blows with Iron Man and Captain America several times over his loose interpretation of orders (or not following them altogether). That’s the Hawkeye I wanted to see.

    • That’s the Hawkeye I want to see too. He needs a personality and a reason for the audience to love him. I think it’s a bit silly Marvel isn’t utilizing Renner more. He’s too good of an actor to have such a small role. I hope he’ll have time to shine in Avengers 2!

      • “He’s too good of an actor to have such a small role.” Remember Halle Berry in X-Men? Just because their current hollywood status is huge, doesn’t mean they deserve more screen time then the others. He was actually appreciative of what he got. As far as the Hawkeye character, I believe he deserves something of his own. Like someone stated, give him and Black Widow their own movie and it might work. Something >100M range and see where it goes. Id prefer a TV show but Renner isn’t that low yet.

        • My point was that Renner, if given the opportunity, could make Hawkeye a great memorable character. He’s a great character in the comics and it’s a shame we didn’t get to see that in the movie.

    • Yeap, that’s him. I have a feeling we’ll see some of that in The Avengers 2, but I fear it may be mostly skipped over since it’s only a three-hour film.

  6. Nah hawk eye is boriing!! I wanna see wolverine or spidey joining the avengers that would be awesome

    • If only the studios would stop acting like the USA vs Russia 40ish years ago.

      • Like /\ /\

  7. I’d love to see an expanded role for Hawkeye in Avengers 2, especially if its portraying the character the way he’s supposed to be. Here’s hoping!

  8. Im sorry to say Renner doesn’t realize that Hawkeye will always be a secondary character in this Avengers universe Hawkeye will just be some one for the Hulk or Ironman to rescue in future Avengers movies

  9. I agree that ‘Hawkeye’ or ‘Black Widow’ will never have solo films, but i would have said together along with ‘Nick Fury’ & ‘Maria Hill’ i could have seen a “SHIELD” film being made before the TV project surfaced. That being said ‘Hawkeye’ & ‘Black Widow’ will definantly get some more time to shine in future Marvel films like “CA TWS”, “Avengers 2″ & “Avengers 3″.

  10. Renner could hold his own in a movie.

They should put feelers out for someone to come up with a script so brilliant in it’s story that they have to make it.

Bond with a crossbow. We already know that could work.

  11. Yeah, that was one of my only problems of this movie was there was’nt that much Hawkeye. I was hoping he would return or cameo in Captain America: The Winter Soldier with Black Widow. But now we have Falcon so thats good.

  12. No solo movie??? Come on, Hawkeye created the west coast avengers (but this is later on) and with the way Renner’s movies have been going so far it’s easy to see him playing the back story growing up as a circus orphan with his brother and all the drama that goes along with it too. However, how he joins the Avengers would be significantly different, but still the Hawkeye back story would be awesome as a movie. Even the Black Widow movie would be interesting. Both characters have potential for pretty awesome solo movies.

  13. I don’t mind Hawkeye as a character, but I don’t feel that his origin or back-story should be a part of the Avengers movies.

Perhaps if they made an animated movie or one of those short films you see on some of the Marvel movies, that would work better.

    • I love all of the animated movies they put out. Huge collector I am.

  14. Think Hawkeye was the least interesting character in the movie by far and I really don’t think it would have been any less of a movie without him in it. That’s not Renner’s fault as an actor – I just didn’t care for Hawkeye that much as the other hero’s and Loki were a lot more interesting.

  15. I don’t think it would work since they’re adding more heroes to the Avenger’s roster. They should have Renner sign on for many Marvel movies and have him develop the character with smaller parts in the movies his character could fit into. That would help to create a larger fan base for Hawkeye and increase the demand for a Hawkeye solo film later on, or at least a film where he has a leading role.

  16. He had some cool moments in the movie and I like Renner in the role but for me he was the least interesting character of the team. And what did he expect, that hed have a bigger spotlight then the big 4?

  17. Things that could redeem Hawkeye in the movie universe: 1) give him a costume, preferably his moder version of his classic, or something based off his classic 2) give him his hoverbike, cause that would be cool 3) have him break away from sheild, he has done it in many timelines, and he never really started there(I still think his backstory may still involve the circus like his original ;)) and while we cant have him prey on Iron man nessecarily, we need to see his cocky and arrogant side 4) something that could set him apart is is he makes an established, not connected to sheild West coast avengers(while he wont get a solo film, if west coast avengers were to happen, he would be cruical to it). now those are some of my thoughts. And I cant wait for Ant-Man!!

  18. Why not explore more of Barton’s/Hawkeye’s character and other heroes in the SHIELD TV show?? They (other heroes and villains) could make little cameos and such, or be mentioned in passing. So much can be shown on the TV show because it’s more constant than a movie. Whedon could take complete advantage of the storytelling.

  19. Sorry, I just see so many other Marvel heroes- or for that matter, Villains, that are way more interesting then Hawk-eye. I like Renner, but I just feel there are too many more complex and important characters that could carry a movie. Hawkeye is a great supporting role and I agree that he was wasted in the “Avengers”. But carry his own movie? Nah. Give me a deep Black Panther flick, an Animated (That’s right, I said it- animated) Dr. Strange movie, a true Daredevil flick, or a truly unbalanced Moon Knight character.

Not excited for Ant-Man either, unless there is a fun camp to it.

  20. Since Hawkeye does not necessarily need alot of CGI i think his backstory (and Scarlet’s) would be good for the Shield TV series. Each backstory could be covered in half a dozen episodes while still paying homage to the Shield story needing to be told.
You can make a pretty good paycheck in TV today and the quality of storytelling has really come up in recent years so I think TV is a great venue for the non-CGI heroes.

    • Sorry M, I did not read all the write ups. You did say something similar.

  21. i’ve said it before. they should make another group film with all of these lesser known characters, such as hawkeye, BW, and BP, and who ever else they want to add. could do a 5-6 minute flashback for each character to give a bit of origin story, some clever exposition, i don’t know, kind of an avengers 1.5 so to speak. have hawk and BW go seek out these other heroes to recruit them for shield/the avengers initiative. i know there schedule is pretty full, and it would add to what some people are calling an over saturation of CBM’s, (me personally, the more the merrier, but not everyone thinks like me), but it could be done somehow. there are SOOO many stories everybody wants to see make it to the big screen. maybe they could do some direct to dvd flicks that fit in the MCU, or like someone else said earlier, 15-20 minute short films the play with the phase 2 films. or marvel make 3 films per year. so many options my head is gonna explode thinking about all this. :)

    • *THAT play with the phase 2 films

      (edit button please???)

  22. Hawkeye, like Black Widow, are good supporting characters in the films, but are not the main headliners, nor will they be. The others like Cap, Iron Man, Thor, etc., have more flash, dash, drama, and powers. However, I would like to see Hawkeye back, but in his purple and blue costume from the 60′s comics. Then he would stand out more, and he can be developed into a little more “forward” and significant character (yes, the clothes do help in some measure to make the man). Black Widow would look better in the skin-tight black costume and nylons she wore in the 60′s comics as well. I am more anxious to see some other characters that are bigger names, though: Goliath (Hank Pym–blue and yellow uniform), Wasp, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch for the heroes, and for the villains: Skrulls, Ultron, and Kang.

    • well we are getting Ant-man first(though that does imply Giant-Man neer the end of the film), but Goliath, and yellow jacket will proably both end up happening in later movies. also while I have heard they can have quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, apperntly they would have to sever all connection to magneto(which would proably end up as well as Rouge did in the X-men movies, somewhat lame and weak[they had to change rouge because her super strength and flight she stole from Ms Marvel, who belongs to marvel]). Personaly I think it would be fun to get Hercules(comeon who doesnt want to see thor get smacked in the face with a Mace!), and spiderwoman could get interesting. I agree with you on Hawkeye going back to a costume, even if its his modern black and purple one(it looks a lot like classic in form though). Also sadly of the villians you mentioned only one could happen, and that is ultron. Skrulls belong to fox due to FF same with Kang(he is the descendant of Doctor Soom). Oh and an Avenger/Villian I would love to see is the Black Knight, maybe he will show up in Ant-Man(it was one of his Strongest enemies, both in originality and character…. though the human top isnt terrible, he’s better now as whirlwind).

  23. @Goldilocks – ‘Black Panther’ is who i want to see the most and than ‘Ms Marvel’, but bring them all on and it’s all good.

  24. @jeffro – I hear you, and that’s not a bad idea. But first and most important is the “Avengers” sequels obviously have to be tended to first, especially while ‘RDJ’ is still in the mix.

  25. I think The Avengers 2 needs to have more on Hawkeye. For proper character development we need to see a little on Hawkeye’s past and show how being controlled by Loki has maybe shaken him up a bit. I’m up for seeing more of Hawkeye in the next Avengers film. Maybe he can even have a big part to play in the Shield series or movie.

  26. I had absolutely no problem with Hawkeye in The Avengers.

  27. Heck, I really liked Hawkeye, because I like archery, and it was cool to see archery in 4 different movies this summer.

  28. Besides Captain America… Hawkeye is the Ultimate Avenger. He’s been there since almost the start, he’s been the leader of the Secret Avengers and his comic is the hottest in the comic world right now.

    Hawkeye rules.

  29. I’m quite pissed that Marvel’s TPTB say to be interested into expanding their universe of solo-projects for their characters when it’s clearly not the case (they do just 2 films per year, no time for else, even if as you can see they prefer to continue the saga of already established characters instead, read Iron Man…)

I’m disappointed as Jeremy is, sure he’s still lucky to be in this super successful franchise, but I’d have hoped for a bigger role for him & Black Widow to play; I mean I’m not delusional but a tad more backstory/development for them & SHIELDS; without having to wait years to see Avengers 2, it’d have been grand…I bet that instead that future SHIELD tv show will feature others unknown as a sort of spin-off/side prequel, & that they’ll use the future films to present new roles (i.e. GOTG), ouch.

Sure I’ve had my fun watching Robert D.J. as the leader of the pack, but after 4 films (including Avengers), they want me to think that they didn’t find a way to make shine also other characters for a change?! :-/)

    • @Kikka – I get waht your saying and i do agree. It’s great that Marvel has finally made official plans to bring “Dr. Strange” to the big screen, but what about “Black Panther” coming to the big screen as well. And hopefully we do indeed get to see Marvel explore a little more into ‘Hawkeye’ & ‘Black Widow’s’ characters in future films. RDJ has great screen presence and charisma, there is no doubt about that, and he’s the spark that got the ball rollin’. Obviously “The Avengers” was fantastic and i’m looking to forward to to the sequel as well as other films from Marvel.
