Jeremy Renner Hoping To Explore Hawkeye More in ‘The Avengers 2′

The Avengers successfully brought together the core roster of Marvel Studios cinematic heroes into an epic blockbuster that became the third biggest box office success of all-time. While director Joss Whedon was able to balance precious screen time and a multitude of story arcs between the likes of Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk and Thor – characters who all had a chance to shine in their own solo origins films beforehand – the same cannot be said of the non-powered heroes.

Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow had a starring role in Iron Man 2 before joining The Avengers, but for Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye, his introduction was limited to a short cameo in Thor. With a chance to finally delve into the character in The Avengers, Renner was none too pleased that Whedon’s script never gave him the opportunity to play character he signed on for.

In an interview with Hero Complex three months after the record-breaking release of The Avengers, Renner spoke honestly about the film and his limited role in it, highlighting the fact that the plot had his character essentially become a mindless grunt up until the final act and action set piece.

“At the end of the day, 90% of the movie, I’m not the character I signed on to play. I’m literally in there for two minutes, and then all of a sudden… All I could really work on was the physical part of it all, because that didn’t change. That was just the biggest challenge to overcome in playing the guy. Also, we’re pretty much introducing a new superhero character to everyone in a movie where there’s a thousand superheroes. So there’s not a lot of back story or understanding we can really tell about who Clint Barton is, or Hawkeye, and is he working for SHIELD or not. There’s a lot of unanswered questions, even for me. And I was OK with that. At least I was still in the movie. And I was glad for that. The closest thing I could really link to was Scarlett [Johansson's] character, Black Widow, because they have a history. And that definitely plays in the movie, I think. And obviously, you can’t go into too much just because there’s so much story to tell, but you definitely get a sense that they’re connected, and that there’s something really, really important that ties them together. And I could try to summarize it, but it can go a lot of places. That excites me, though, that there’s room for other things.”

While Scarlett Johansson will get to explore more of the backstory behind Natasha Romanoff AKA Black Widow in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Renner may not get a chance to return to the big screen as SHIELD Agent Clint Barton AKA Hawkeye until The Avengers 2 releases in the summer of 2015. Despite Marvel President of Production Kevin Feige teasing potential Marvel Studios spinoffs for the two, it’s rather safe to say that – like Black Widow – the Hawkeye character will never get a solo film.

What does that mean for the story of Clint Barton and star Jeremy Renner? In chatting with MTV, Renner essentially confirms his (obvious) return and is hopeful that the second time around, the script for The Avengers 2 will let him play character he was pitched before signing on. In Marvel Comics, Hawkeye is more of a lone wolf, often clashing with the other members of The Avengers.

“It’s what he was able to do with the first one. Now, there’s more opportunities to explore the characters a little more, I think, for everybody. I think that’s exciting.”

Renner stresses that he’s not trying to offer suggestions or make demands, jokingly admitting he’d “screw things all up.” That being said, Hawkeye’s history in the books seems to lend itself well with what Whedon has been touting for the sequel, a film which he describes as more personal, not as “happy.”

“The creation of the team is not the happy ending. It is the beginning of something that is complex and difficult, and now I get to dig a little deeper. And maybe, while I’m digging, just twist that knife. And that’s exciting for me.”

With potentially even more characters joining the fray for The Avengers 2, Whedon and co. have a challenge ahead of meeting lofty expectations and letting so many different characters have their chance to shine. Would you like to see more Hawkeye in Phase Two of the Marvel cinematic universe and should his role be expanded in The Avengers sequel?

  1. im hoping in the Avengers 2 2015 and the avengers 3 if its made in 2018 that hawkeye will be in it more then the first one and more of black widow too. i would like to see more on how hawkeye and black widow joins S.E.I.L.D.S team from the being. i was hoping that they could do a black widow movie and put hawkeye in it how they meet how hawkeye saves her from being bad and turns her good

i really just like to see more hawkeye,,,, hawkeye rules……

    • @Samantha – Unlike ‘Iron Man’, ‘Thor’, ‘Hulk’ & ‘Captain America’, i’m not sure ‘Black Widow’ or ‘Hawkeye’ are strong enough characters for their own solo films, but put them together and that’s a different story. I’ve always said a ‘S.H.I.E.L.D’ film starring ‘Black Widow’, ‘Hawkeye’, ‘Nick Fury’ & ‘Maria Hill’ would be perfect, by doing that you get the non-superpowered heroes. This could be more of the traditional action film without as much green room scenes, kinda like a combination of ‘Die Hard’, ‘James Bond’ with espianoge.

  2. Renner is a fine actor, but he is not an “above the title” star. He’s had his chance in both Bourne Legacy and Hansel and Gretel, and no one showed up.

Time to give Black Panther and Captain Marvel a shot at the title, so to speak.

    • @Xmasevebaby – You know i agree with you on introducing ‘Black Panther’ & ‘Ms. Marvel’ to the big screen my friend, bring them on, lol. Renner is indeed a fine actor, but not an actor who can totally carry his own films, not too many do these days as that one big box office star is becoming more of a thing of the past. If you look at most of the big box hits these days they’re led more by ensamble casts than individual stars.

    • You obviously did not see the Hurt Locker. That’s where Jeremy Renner’s acting talent really shines. He is absolutely brilliant.

  3. I can’t believe that we’re getting Ant-Man, before even the possibilty of a “Shield” movie with Fury, Widow, and Hawkeye.

    • why give ant-man a movie but not a black widow and hawkeye movie first i rather see that kind of movie before an ant-man movie i saw black widow and hawkeye in the first movie not ant-man screw ant-man i rather not see him in any of the advenger movies. give widow and hawkeye solo movies there better then ant-man the ant-man movie well probley not bring in an money that how stupid it is.

      • I’m not a big Ant-Man fan myself, I would rather see solo films for Black Panther, Dr. Strange, Luke Cage & Namor. To me it wasn’t a big deal at all that Whedon didn’t use Ant-Man in the first film, it should have played out that way to me. Now I will be in the theater to see Ant-Man when it’s released, but it’s probably my least anticipated film from Marvel Studios. A team up movie of Black Widow & Hawkeye would be great and should be made.

  4. I look forward to seeing a cooler Hawkeye not that he wasn’t cool in the first one buti think they can dig deeper into the character for the sequel I certainly hope they do

  5. All they need with hawkeye is to show a little backstory along with black widdow. They played him decent i think and i actually liked the bad guy part of him because in the comics he was a villain before hero, i think it was a good way to twist that in there. However i think in either avengers 2 or in one of the 4 phase 2 movies before that. Perhaps explain the whole butepash (however you spell that) thing or the way he could help black widow get rid of her red ledger.

  6. It would be wonderful to see the Hawkeye character developed more in avengers 2. Jeremy Renner is a wonderful actor and deserves a bigger and more in depth role along with Black Widow. I am also hoping that in the Nick Fury movie the fans will get to see them in action (Hawkeye and Black Widow). Jeremy Renner can carry a film, but a lot of fans wanted pure action in Bourne Legacy. They also gave us an emotional connection to the character. This I think made Aaron Cross more believable and less of a machine like figure.

  7. Oooh, my. I like how everyone’s only quoting the first part, the part where he sounds critical, of this little interview instead of the ending where he’s quote complimentary to give credence to the rumor that Renner isn’t going to return for the Avengers 2. I think both Hawkeye as a character and Renner as an actor are a fantastic part of the Avengers and I really and truly hope that he does return and get some more backstory. That would be lovely.

    • @usernamesareadrag – Yeah ‘Renner’ will be returning in “Avengers 2″ to reprise his role as ‘Clint Barton’ aka ‘Hawkeye’, there’s no doubt in my mind about that. Since he’s not appearing in “CA: TWS” with ‘Scarlett’ & ‘Sam L’ people foolish assume his days are numbered as ‘Hawkeye’ which i don’t think is the case. Did people ever think that just maybe there was’nt a role for him in this movie, maybe it’s that plain and simple.

  8. Jeremy Renner is a loving actor and i’d love to see him in the next 2 avengers movies AND a movie byhimself with black widow (Scarlett)

    #Hawkeye 4 ever!

  9. Nuuuuuuuuuu I’m still waiting for hawkeye to have a topless scene Pleeeaassseeee let him stay

  10. what the hey haweye as jeremy renner if he not in it im done with the avengers the only reason why i watch the avengers is bc jeremy renner in it jeremy renner rocks and there alot of people that are jeremy renner fans

    • Samantha I don’t think you have to worry about that, from what i’m hearing Hawkeye will be featured more in the upcoming sequel. Also relax a little bit and chill out sweetheart, it was only the first movie in a series of at least 3 films, there is plenty of time to delve into Hawkeye’s character and explore it more.

  11. i do get renner point in the hole bad guy and being loki b**** thing and money give what renner wants he not as big as the other super heros but the movie people who did the movie didn’t stick with what renner signed on to do that not far that alot of disapointment renner all the way he rocks

  12. So he is officially coming back as Hawkeye or has that not been confirmed?

  13. hawk eye..Is the best character of avengers

  14. I always thought that by themselves the Hawkeye and Black Widow backstories are too small to be made in to films on their own, but put them together and the end result could be very successful. I always imagined a film where we flit back and forth between their backstories and how they become who they are and connected to S.H.I.E.L.D. with the film’s conclusion being what happens in Budapest. That way we could also see more Phil Coulson and Strike Team Delta.
