Phase 1 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe largely dealt with establishing Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and Hulk as the most powerful heroes in the MCU. Along the way however, they introduced two other soon to be Avengers with Jeremy Renner debuting as Clint Barton aka Hawkeye in Thor, while Scarlett Johansson made her debut as Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow in Iron Man 2. Since their introductions, it has been Black Widow who has been given the larger role, such as being the unofficial co-lead in Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Still, whenever Black Widow and Hawkeye share the screen together, some new layer to their friendship becomes known, most of which relate to previous battles they’ve fought together. While it is Black Widow who has been the source for a large number of fan campaigns to get her own solo movie, Renner would also be interested in doing a team-up movie with her.
Renner was interviewed by the British newspaper Metro and Edmonton Sun was able to pull the quotes from the interview to share. During the interview, Renner says why he thinks Black Widow makes the most sense to be in a team-up movie with the archer. However, the following is purely just interest on his part, as he says there are not any ongoing discussions about making this movie a reality:
I always thought it would make sense early on to do a Hawkeye/Widow movie because they’re quite similar – they don’t have powers, have high skill sets, and have history together, but I don’t think there are any discussions about that happening. I’d love to do it though.
There has been no shortage of support for a Black Widow movie, with Johansson calling it a possibility recently after Avengers/Avengers: Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon and Sam Wilson/Falcon actor Anthony Mackie expressed interest in being involved with such a project. Hawkeye on the other hand, has not received the same level of interest.
Instead of aspirations of a solo movie or a team up with Black Widow in this instance, Renner’s best possibility for Hawkeye to be a lead may be on the Netflix side. If this ever is considered, he has already said he would be up to do that as well. Even if there was a strong push from viewers to give Hawkeye a leading role in a movie however, the reality is there is no room for that on Marvel’s current schedule.
The studio is currently focused on giving Black Panther and Captain Marvel their first solo movies, as well as shoot the next two Avengers films (which Renner will be involved with). Hawkeye does not necessarily need a solo film, and there is no telling whether or not he will make it out of their encounter with Thanos to have the chance. If he does, a true Hawkeye and Black Widow movie still seems unlikely. But, if Marvel Studios does green light the Black Widow movie, it wouldn’t be too surprising for Renner to make an appearance there.
