When it was announced that a movie was being made about bubblegum, I thought I’d heard it all. Then comes this latest news about action legend Jean-Claude Van Damme, known up until this point for kicking bad-guy ass in action movies (mostly the straight-to-DVD sort in recent years).

Well, it appears that Van Damme’s recent semi-autobiographical movie JCVD may have sparked interest in the muscles from Brussels branching out: word is he will soon be starring in a horror movie bluntly called The Breed!

That’s right, you read that correctly, Van Damme is making his way into the horror genre. Whilst at the Cannes Film Festival, Van Damme gave us the surprising genre-jumping news:

“This summer I will make a new movie with a famous director called WEAPON. After that I will make a horror movie called THE BREED. Its a great story, great script with true emotion. I want to show the fans i am transferable. i wanted to make a horror movie a few years back but the script was weak and had no direction.

BREED is different it’s set in a village where strange things happen… You know, let the movie speak for itself!”

I think this is a great idea. Not only is it a platform for Van Damme to branch out into a genre unknown to him, allowing us to see if he’s made of more than muscles and martial arts, but it also shows that he personally wants to star in something other than an action flick. No doubt his action talents will be put to use in one way or another in The Breed, but I think his real motivation is to show us he is capable doing more than one type of film.

There’s not a whole lot of additional info about what The Breed is, exactly, other than what Van Damme said above. Comparisons can definitely be drawn between what Van Damme is doing and the other action man, Steven Segal, who recent battled zombies in the straight-to-DVD flick, Against the Dark.

Yeah, word of mouth ain’t so good on that one. Let’s hope The Breed is a lot better.

What do you think about Jean-Claude Van Damme starring in a horror movie? Do you think “The Muscles From Brussels” and the horror genre will be suited to one another?

  1. Van Damme is making a slow comeback, but it is good to know he’s still kicking butt.

  2. Hey, you all do know that JCVD and Dolph are together again in another Universal Soldier movie right?

This, didn`t he kinda make a horror DTV film? Something about cults? Kickboxer and Bloodsport still rules man!

  3. I’m not sure why but I really want to see JCVD suceed. Maybe it’s because I grew up watching the man but I’m behind him with support on this one.

One word of advice Jean Claude…never ever EVER use the phrase “weak and no direction” to describe the reason on why you turned down a film or I will personally post and review every crappy ass film you made in the past 20 years starting Double Take!

  4. I SAY GOOD LUCK, HE’S AWSOME

  5. No doubt this sounds interesting… but the problem is, I’d rather have him do the KARATE movie he promised us.

In case you guys haven’t heard of it..

  6. Sigh…I have a bad feeling about THE BREED…Against the Dark was a horrible movie. I don’t know why Seagal is still around.

I do have way more respect for JVCD just because he’s actually trying with his movie career and staying in shape.

Why oh why did he turn down a role in Expandables?

  7. @ogb

Yeah, I appreciate JCVD trying to “reinvent” himself, put turning down a role in The Expendables was a mistake. Even Dolph L. knew to jump onboard that film!

  8. Agreed Kofi, that was a silly move on JCVD’s part. Maybe he’s tired of being pigeonholed into action movies.

I’m not a big fan of horror, so I won’t be seeing this film. But if he makes another Bloodsport type flick, I will SO be there. :D

  9. @ Paul Young, you totally should! Ha!

That being said, I do think Van Damme might do well in the horror genre. Though it would be somewhat amusing to see him try to act “scared.”

  10. Ha! With that piture posted there, he looks like a horror!

  11. I didn’t mean that, sorry. (Shame on me.)

  12. Its funny that JCVD easily turned down a role in The Expendables whereas this actor wants to be part of the Expendables for Sly

He has acting chops and is a new face, Sly should really get on this kid! Bring in a new face cause, well lets face it, The Expendables is great but all these guys are passed their prime. Even Austin, he’s nearing 50! Couture is almost there, you can see the age on Dolph! It will be great seeing the heroes back in action but we need some new blood!
And Jet Li, even though he looks young, he is nearing 50 as well! I would say he is mid-50!

Check out this kid, he is really good! We should back him up!
