I was thrilled when I heard Anderson has taken this over simply because I thought that would mean that he would not be involved with Transilvania. I don’t have a vested interest in Death Race but Transilvania is a game and story I love so I feel your pain about his involvement.

With action movies, it’s hard to pin down its difficulties to any director as most of the stunt and action sequences are down to the 2nd unit director. Unless there’s an actor in the frame, most directors aren’t even on the set.

Vic says:

I don’t find that the problem with most action movies is the action itself, rather it’s story and dialog.

At the moment I am working on a movie with no plot. It involves the assassination of a diplomat but no mention of his political leanings, or those of his assassin, is made. The idea is that global agencies are interchangeable and so specific countries and political agendas are negligible. Its the Maguffin theory: who cares what is in the box in Heat or the suitcase in Kiss Me Deadly or Pulp Fiction? It is only a device to drive the action along.

Vic says:

Ah, but it DOES have a plot, just no specifics. :-)

Does a car chase or a fight sequence have a plot?

Vic says:

Of course not. Those are just components of a movie. I’m talking about why a particular action movie might fail as a WHOLE.

Action sequences alone do not necessarily make an action movie a good one.
