Jason Segel Is An ‘Undercover Cop’

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum will soon be teaming up to star in the undercover cop movie 21 Jump Street, the big-screen version of the ’80s TV series of the same name. But not content with just one movie of this kind, Hollywood is going to deliver us another comedy about an undercover cop entitled, well, Undercover Cop.

Risky Business is reporting exclusively that comedic actor Jason Segel is attached to star in the bluntly titled Undercover Cop (whatever happened to imaginative titles?) which is being set up by DreamWorks Studios with Steve Zaillian’s Film Rites banner producing.

Although specific plot details are being kept under wraps for the time being, we do know that Undercover Cop is inspired by, “the true story of a former cop that infiltrated the New Jersey criminal underworld in the era of feathered hair, zipper jackets and ‘Born in the U.S.A.’” I imagine there will be some crossover in the types of jokes found in this and 21 Jump Street but the difference is Undercover Cop will likely be actually set in the ’80s (at least at best guess) while 21 Jump Street will be updated to modern day.

Relative newcomer Jason Micallef has been hired to write the script for Undercover Cop (he also wrote a script called Butter which The Weinstein Company is producing for a potential 2012 release) and the film will be produced by Zaillian (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo). The original idea for the film was brought to DreamWorks by Film Rites’ Garrett Basch who will serve as exec producer on the project.

Segel’s popularity is only continuing to grow, which is likely why he was chosen to star in this film. His upcoming projects include the highly anticipated The Muppets (which he also co-wrote) and the comedy Bad Teacher, co-starring Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake. He was absolutely hilarious in the Judd Apatow-produced comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall (which he also wrote), in the underrated I Love You, Man, and he still continues to make me laugh in the CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother. I’m glad to see Segel branching out with Undercover Cop which, by the sounds of it, may provide for some action as well as comedy.

Undercover Cop just adds to the list of comedies DreamWorks has in the pipeline, alongside Forever 21, Reply All and Home Movies. Film Rites is just as busy, producing remakes of the British thriller series the Red Riding Trilogy; the thriller The Cold Light of Day for Summit Entertainment (The Twilight Saga) and the remake of the Spanish-language time travel thriller Time Crimes (also set up at DreamWorks).

Producer Steve Zaillian is an extremely sought after talent in Hollywood right now, having written the upcoming remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo for director David Fincher; re-writing the aforementioned Time Crimes remake; and he is currently in talks to re-write the script for the Jack Ryan reboot, Moscow.

Can Segel be believable as an undercover cop? In a serious film, perhaps not, but it won’t be too much of a stretch to see him in a comedy set in or at least inspired by the ’80s, rife with sly jokes about the music and clothes of the time.

Undercover Cop doesn’t have a shooting or release date yet but stay tuned for that info and more on the project.

  1. Is it even possible to create something original these days?

I’ve seen this plot 5000 times.

  2. Agreed. I think Hollywood is out of ideas.

  3. Forget original. Muppets are just plain stupid. Why do they even exist?
