jason mamoa cast conan the barbarian remake Jason Momoa Cast as Conan the Barbarian!

The remake of 1982′s Conan the Barbarian is on its way and replacing Arnold Schwarzenegger as the infamous warrior will be Jason Momoa (Stargate: Atlantis, North Shore). Yeap, Ronon is the new Conan and if that’s not all, Mickey Rourke may be playing his father!

Ronon Dex is the character that Momoa is most well known for playing from four of the five seasons of Stargate: Atlantis and the upcoming film, Stargate: Extinction.

It was reported that Momoa met with Lionsgate last week and did a great job in his screentests and presenting himself with the execs, however they held off offering him the role until a certain other actor had the chance to audition. Long story short, Momoa had another test this week and now he’s got a career-defining role after spending most of his young career in the television business.

In October, Screen Rant reported on the casting breakdown for the Conan remake and the following description was given for the ideal actor for the title role [SPOILER Warning]:

He’s in his 20s to early 30s, Caucasian, powerfully built, broad-shouldered, sun browned skin lined with scars. Piercing blue eyes and square-cut black mane, tall. He is a savage killer that has matured into the refinement his father tried to teach him when he was young. Conan is very smart, almost inhumanly strong, and very cunning. His entire life, from the moment of his birth, has been shaped by violence. Being the last of his tribe and having to watch his father die a cruel death, he is determined avenge his peoples’ slaughter by killing all those who led the attack on the Cimmerians, including the all-powerful Khalar Singh. He is prepared to die in order to accomplish his goal. What Conan did not expect, was to find a reason to live… LEAD

Momoa is ripped but I expect he’ll be doing some bulking up if he wants to be compared to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s take on the Barbarian. He meets most of the requirements listed above and I’m up for seeing what he can do as Conan. He did play a bad-ass warrior dude in Stargate, not too different – he just won’t have that cool gun to battle Thulsa Doom (played by James Earl Jones in the original).

conan remake arnold schwarzenegger Jason Momoa Cast as Conan the Barbarian!

Can Jason Momoa look like this?

Latino Review is also exclusively reporting that Jason Momoa not only beat out Kellan Lutz and John Brotherton, but that the other candidate for the role was Supernatual’s Jared Padalecki who auditioned for the role this week before they decided on Mamoa. Padalecki had an in for the audition having worked with Conan director Marcus Nispel before on the Friday the 13th remake and he auditioned last week.

That’s not all, El Mayimbe also got the exclusive that they’ve offered the role of Conan’s dad to comeback wonder Mickey Rourke who hit it big with The Wrestler last year and will kick-off this summer as the lead villain in Iron Man 2.

What do you think of Jason Momoa as Conan and Mickey Rourke possible playing his father?

Conan will be directed by Marcus Nispel and will likely open in summer 2011.

  1. Fantastic casting choice…if they are going to remake a film like this then at least they can choose the proper actor for the role.

  2. I'm so excited that they chose Jason! None of the other actors mentioned would inspire me to pay to see this movie, but I think Jason will be worth multiple viewings!!

  3. I loved Jason on Stargate Atlantis. Although I like Jared Padalecki on Supernatural, he wasn't right for Conan. Happy for Momoa.

  4. Momoa is a way better actor than Arnold so maybe we'll get a more interesting Conan than Arnolds musclebound oaf. Hopefully they will actually read a Conan tale or two to get a sense of the characters and stories.

  5. YES!YES! Finally a good choice for Conan!!!! Thank You! i read the books long before Arnold did the movies, and I think(know) Jason will do it justice! Doing the happy dance, we're gonna get more Conan movies.:)

  6. As long as he doesn't have the dreadlocks, I'm in.

  7. Owsome… :D Can't wait…. This is a perfect choice

  8. The movie and the characters don't have anything in common with Robert E. Howard's CONAN. Whoich is also true with Jason as Conan. Though I like his acting in Stargate: Atlantis, he just does not fit into the character of Conan.
Go and read the original Robert Howard stories, the real Conan stories and you will instantly know what I'm talking about.
Very obviously the fim makers haven't.

  9. Not sure if i agree with Momoa as Conan. In my opinion he is to thin for the role. Surely they could have chosen someone else, who is a bit more bigger (in muscles). Because he is thin, he can lift all the weights he wants, I don't think he would acquire the actual bulk that Arnold had, while playing the role. Momoa doesn't have the look. Furthermore, while i like Mickey Rouke, i can't see him playing Conan's dad. It's just off. I mean, Momoa is hawaiian/somoan, not white, yet his father is white. There is no mention of his mother. I would like them to have things make sense when making movies, especially remakes. I mean, are they casting M. Rourke simply because he is Mickey Rouke? If so, this type of casting is very annoying.

Also, i don't think i like Lions Gate doing this type of movie, as it sort of reminds me of the horrible direct-to-dvd, second installment of the scorpion king. Lions Gate is good when it comes to the direct-to-dvd cartoons of marvel characters and should just stick with that a stay with it. I enjoyed the Conan movies as a kid and I wouldn't want them to mess this up as some studios have already messed up Spiderman and the X-men movies. By the way, Marvel actually bought the rights to Conan sometime ago. I believe in the 1980s.

  10. Personally, I am a conan fan and this man is a good choice.. but there has to be a few things done her to make it right. First he needs to add strength and weight. He is to small and to thin. They also have to have him with blue contacts because of conan having blue eyes. The dreds have to go.. Conan has long thick black hair not dreds.. also.. People need to get Arnold out of their heads when thinking of Conan. If you read any of the novels.. He is NOT conan. They screwed up the other movies by adding stuff from Kull into them.. I think this man might be able to pull it off.. acting wise.. actually look wise. he needs a bit of work. Unless they start him off as Conan the theif.. If they do, then he is at the perect size.
As for Mickey, Only way he needs to be in the movie is for scenes where Conan leaves the tribes and thats about it. Not much is known about his family. So I think they are throwing him in just for namesake.
We shall see what happens.. all in all bash it or love it.. people will go see it and it will sell.

  11. Looks like this is going to be Jason Momoa's big break. I actually met him a few years ago when he was dating an Australian actress. He's a really nice bloke. Friendly, humble and approachable.

Didn't mind him on Stargate: Atlantis. I hope he loses the dreadlocks and beefs right up for the role.

“Pathfinder” is a film directed by Marcus Nispel. I almost purchased it the other day on DVD but refrained. Has anyone here seen it? Is it any good?

  12. Mickey Rourke scares me, but I assume he'll have a small role Jason, however. Kudos to him!

  13. Re: dreads, he got them cut off over a year ago. The last half of season 5 of “Atlantis
they were sewing them back on. He had to get permission from the shows producers to do it and it was on “Gateworld”.

  14. All this talk about dreads is making me think about a black conan. A Black Conan? Hmmmmmm. I'm pitching this.

  15. Momoa is 6'5″ and is half Hawaiian but on his moms side he is irish german and indian which sounds pretty good for conan. Conan was always described as being dark from constant exposure to the sun. One thing I'd like to see but probably won't is a hairy chested Conan. As far as I know barbarians didn't frequent waxing salons.

  16. Sounds like fun! I adore Jason, looking forward to it.

  17. HA HA HA

  18. I can't get on board with this choice, and really, I'm not on board with remaking this film. If they want a new Conan film, why don't they just write a screenplay based on the original Howard stories? I'm different than all of these crazy Howard purists. I actually LOVED Arnold as Conan, and I came to the character through the film. I didn't actually read Conan until I was an adult, and I didn't really care that much for the stories to tell the truth. I have really enjoyed the Dark Horse comics interpretations, though. I see where the purists are coming from, but I like Milius' Conan the Barbarian for a completely different set of circumstances.

Anyway, having said that, I wish Nispel the Remake Wonder would go find someone else's movie to ruin. Apparently he's about to ruin it for the Milius fans AND the Howard purists.

(Disclaimer: I thought that Conan the Destroyer was HORRIBLE.)

  19. Conan isn't Hawaiian. Failed before launch.

  20. God forbid we stuck to the source material for even the casting. HE IS HAWAIIAN, how does that make a good Conan? What a hack this movie will be.

  21. If you've been a Conan fan for so long, then why would you ever think a Hawaiian actor would make a good Conan? Somehow I doubt your sincerity.

  22. I doubt they read anything since I never saw anywhere in the books where Conan was Hawaiian.

  23. Read the books again and find the part where Conan is Hawaiian, did you even read the books?

  24. Exactly!!!! Well said. I'm fairly sure some of the other commenters who have claimed to have read the books are suffering from amnesia.

  25. You forgot something. He needs to change his ethnicity from Hawaiian to Cracker ASAP. WTF?

  26. Well said, well said.
