Jamie Foxx Django Unchained Jamie Foxx is Tarantinos Django Unchained; DiCaprio Onboard [Updated]

[Update: Jamie Foxx is Quentin Tarantino's pick to play the lead in Django Unchained. See post for details.]

Quentin Tarantino’s spaghetti western/slavery revenge flick Django Unchained has had names such as Will Smith and Idris Elba rumored for its titular lead, but today brings word of a third actor/musician whose name is being thrown into the ring.

Reports are now coming in that Jamie Foxx is being considered to headline Django Unchained and the Interwebs are sure to be buzzing about this one.

For those not yet in the know: Django Unchained is Tarantino’s homage to spaghetti westerns, and even takes its name from the 1966 film Django by Sergio Corbucci. Of course that film is getting a Tranatino-style makeover, after which it will be set in the deep south during the slavery era, and the titular gunslinger is a freed slave who is trained by a German bounty hunter (Inglourious Basterds star Christoph Waltz) to become a bounty hunter himself, hell-bent on finding his wife and liberating her from slavery.

Let the controversy ensue.

Update: Deadline now reports that Tarantino has in fact selected Jamie Foxx as the man to play Django, and negotiations with the actor have comenced. A deal is expected to be reached shortly.

Getting back to casting, Foxx’s name being attached to the film is sure to elicit an…impassioned response, but he has proven himself to be a solid actor, and Tarantino has proven himself a director who knows who to cast, how to cast them, and how to get their best (and/or wildest) work on the screen. After all, this is the guy who made David Carradine, Robert Forester, Jon Travolta, Pam Grier and Samuel L. Jackson screen icons again. Nuff said.

Will Smith was thought to have passed on Tarantino’s western around the time Elba’s name started circling the project; Elba was suspected as having passed when his name started being floated for Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. If suspicions about Smith and Elba moving on are true, it could indeed be Foxx who we see in the role. You better stay tuned to this one.

DiCaprio and Foxx?

Further reports (stemming from Showbiz 411) also claim that Leonardo DiCaprio is indeed locked for the role of villain “Calvin Candie” in the film – and we can only guess what Tarantino has in store with that character. Could be a new milestone in DiCaprio’s career, if history is anything to judge by. Samuel L. Jackson is also attached to play Stephen, Calvin Candie’s valet, who is tasked with keeping other slaves in line.

Stay tuned for more updates about Django Unchained – including confirmation about the actor taking on the titular role.

  1. This is going to be epic. SMJ, DiCaprio, Waltz, Elba/Foxx.

    SO MUCH WIN.

    • SLJ* whoops

  2. Not a fan of Foxx at all. Would rather see Elba or Smith. But I will still be in the theater on day 1 to see this.

  3. Man, bad casting choice.

  4. god casting!

  5. Rather see Smith in the role, but I’m OK with Foxx. I’m mostly excited about seeing what Tarantino has in store for DiCaprio, however! Should be a very interesting and unique role for him.

  6. Knowing QT’s track record, I bet non of the big lead actors will take it and somebody who either isn’t big yet or fallen out of the light will come in and boast their career. But that’s just my humble prediction :)

    • Agreed

  7. Please let it be Elba. Cast some non A list black actors for once. Stop always goin for Foxx, Smith, Washington, etc

    • Please just pick Anthony Mackie or Idris Elba.

  8. this is one of the reason why underrated black actors dont get a chance. hollywood is too stuck on the typical casting of A list black actors. all the unrated black actors are limited to be playing supporting roles. look how Hollywood cast unknown/underrated white actors for major roles in big budget movies.

i rather see this casting Idris Elba, Anthony Mackie, Chiwetel Ejiofor

    • I concur. Couldn’t have said it any better.

    • Nicely said.

    • you do realise that these actors continue to get work because they not only generate revenue (probably a good thing?) but they are also exceptionally good at what they do. Cry your eyes out about these other actors not getting the roles, but there is no way on earth that aa movie with Elba in a STARRING ROLE is going to make anywhere near as much as a movie with Smith or Foxx.

It’s all fine for you to sit there and wish good things for these other actors, and I do to, but they don’t have the strength or box office pull that Smith, washington, foxx have. It’s as simple as that.

And enough with the studio bashing. oh typical studio only ever hiring blah blah blah. Get over it. they’re making choices based on what the public want. not just the very small demo that you represent.

      Relax, be happy.

  9. So Tarantino is going to get credit for coming with the story of Catcher Freeman?

    • coming up!

  10. IMO:
    Elba>Foxx>Smith

  11. Man, I hate Jamie Foxx.. I’ll be really disappointed if he’s in this. Very good news about DiCaprio though, a Leo/Quentin flick is a recipe for awesomeness.

  12. Tyler Perry

    • hellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  13. Elba should really get on this, how the hell do you pass up a Tarantino movie!?!? Blasphemy.

  14. Man Im am still hopeful that Will Smith will still do this, this could be a badass career breaking heroic role for him, and I’m really interested in seeing what Leonardo Dicaprio will do as the villain, just imagine those 2 guys facing off Tarantino style, Someone needs to talk to Will and tell him to hurry up and sign.

  15. I don’t like Foxx at all, he’s not a great actor. I want Idris Elba to be in this, he’d be the best choice, this should be one hell of an interesting film.

  16. why do people keep saying Tyler Perry dont he do movies like big mamas house lol

  17. What about that dude that was in “Blood Diamond” with Leo? Dijon Honsou, Dijon Mustard, something like that?

  18. I am a HUGE fan of Tarantino, I know his passion for using what inspires him in his films so I’m really excited to see this and I feel like Jamie Foxx will finally have a role that is just as, if not, more fulfilling than Ray was. Jamie is a terrific actor, but the real heavy weight of the film is Leonardo DiCaprio. He can play them all, thanks to The Aviator we know he can play one crazy S.O.B. to a T and Blood Diamond shows how hardcore and intense he can be. I am more than excited to see how this pans out for DiCaprio, hopefully this movie wins him his first (but way late) Oscar.
