superman reboot with wachowskis and mcteigue James McTeigue Reveals His Superman Reboot Idea

Last week, Screen Rant Editor Kofi reported on the major Superman news where Warner Brothers lost possession of the rights to the Man of Steel’s origins.

The Judge had made another ruling on this decade-long court battle which stated that heirs of Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joel Schuster now own most of Superman’s early history. This obviously was another major blow to WB who found out earlier (in another ruling) that they’d be completely losing Superman come 2013.

For the film franchise, the court rulings meant that the studio needed to fast-track production of their Superman reboot plans and we reported on the rumor that James McTeigue and the Wachowski brothers would be put in charge of that task.

McTeigue stopped by the offices of MTV’s Splash Page and spoke with them about his vision for the Superman reboot. Not surprisingly, he didn’t confirm his involvement… or deny it, but he at least explained his idea for what he’d like the movie to be.

“I think if I was ever going to go near Superman, I would do a complete reboot—take it in a direction that you would absolutely not expect, actually… So, that would be my thinking on it, if I was ever going to go near Superman.”

Building on the recent news of Warner Brothers’ recent loss of the rights to Superman’s origins, McTeigue took it in a positive light, using it for his idea for the next film.

“I think it’s good that they just had a court case where, basically, if you make another Superman movie, you can’t touch Superman growing up—that’s part of the story that you can’t touch any more… That wouldn’t be a bad thing. I think everybody’s a bit sick of seeing the origin story.”

Assuming he has the gig as director of Man of Steel, he’s simply defending his employer. Of course he has to make good of the news if he’s helming the project. That being said, I agree with what he’s saying and we don’t need another origin story.

The idea all along was to make the re-boot more action-packed and move on past the same old stuff. That would mean less origins and less (or no) Lex Luthor. We need action, story and a worthy villain.

So, while James McTeigue still hasn’t been officially confirmed to be attached to the project, it certainly sounds like he will be. Check back with Screen Rant for more news and confirmations as they come.

What do you think of McTeigue revealing his potential Superman reboot?

Look out for James McTeigue’s Ninja Assassin which opens November 25, 2009.

  1. As long as he doesn’t go TOOOO wild

  2. I think he’s right. A reboot is needed because you can’t just pick up where Superman Returns left off. It wasn’t very good. You need to start over and please no comedy.

  3. YES!! Reboot FTW! I like him already. :-)

My idea: It’s Superman’s second month in Metropolis and he’s figuring out how things work (Luthor owns/runs everything, the city’s beautiful exterior belies it’s criminal nature, Daily Planet is the only non Luthor owned business, reporters are bribed/threatened not to print the truth, basically do a modern version of the 1938 stuff). Lois and Clark are “rivals” because Clark turned in the first interview with Superman, which Lois wanted which is how he got his job there at the Planet, there’s a sort of “sexual tension” between the two. Oh, and Brainiac is the BIG BAD, Luthor is a supporting character. Parasite or Metallo could show up at the end. Lots of action, lots of Supes pissed and punching stuff. I think that’s what we all wanna see. :-)

Superman is a combination of the Byrne/Golden Age/TAS Superman, people are afraid of him and what he can do so he must act very nice towards everyone, very human, he cannot betray their trust, that’s a dynamic I’d focus on in the film. :)

  4. ….and thanks for the post, Rob! :-)

  5. He says that he would do a reboot, but not tell a story of Superman’s childhood, and take it in a unexpected direction. Hmmm, that sounds familiar? Wasn’t their a Superman Returns movie that was a reboot with a fresh cast taking over the roles, it was not a story at all of Superman’s childhood, and it went in a completely unexpected direction of having Superman leave the planet for 5 years and when he came back, he found out that him and Lois had a son.
I’m just saying, I’m just saying.
I loved Superman Returns, but I also loved V for Vendetta, and if Singer cannot come back, I’m all for McTeigue taking over for the next movie.

  6. Mctiegue isnt talking about another Superman Returns.
I am open to hearing his ideas.

  7. I really liked Superman returns, it focuses on the dilemma of being superman, more than Vs action. Superman is godlike, but chose to protect and help the humans instead of ruling over them, he can never have a good personal life as Clark Kent as long as he is superman, if find this much more fascinating than him beating up big bad guys with super strength. – Superman 4 was really bad, but the good things in it was Superman asking to helping to get rid of war, and seeing how he cant just blunt force fight Nuclear man, cause he has to think of the humans.

No you could do this again just well, see superman fight big bad guys – Metallo or Doomsday on earth, or you could have him of in space being one of manny super beings using his smarts to solve problems.

I´d like to se a Legion of Superheroes Film. with an adult superman going to the future to help out the legion.

  8. No reboot, just take it with Superman trying to fight off a sinister villain, like Darkseid maybe.
Darkseid is so powerful and crippling Superman actually hurts his ego, then you can bring in that whole God-complex to Superman.
How about that idea, actually, McTeague, if you actually check ScreenRant, I can give you an outline treatment for free! :D

  9. What I would like the most is for a continuation of the Superman returns, with Brandon and everyone else + maybe darkseid yes…

  10. @Johnny-K

I thought Routh was fine as Superman and I think Returns would have been much better with:

    A. NO bastard child.

    B. No creepy “stalker” Superman.

    C. No Lex Luthor.

But your point about having god-like powers and trying to live like a normal person is a good one and a story worth telling – too bad they screwed up with the items listed above.

  11. How about exploring what Superman did during his five year absence from Earth. This could put Supes on a Cosmic level. Maybe we could see Darkseid?

  12. I don’t know why people think that his origin story was done to death, since it was only in ONE film. Unless we’re counting Smallville, but aren’t most people writing off Smallville as an alternate Superman timeline?

I just hope that McTeigue doesn’t mean that we’re going to have a “dark” Superman. Superman doesn’t need to be dark. Returns had it’s moments, but like Vic, the bastard child needs to go and less Lex would be good (although I did like Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor). I wonder if they would put Bizarro in a film?

  13. I, to, believe they can just continue from Superman Returns, with little of “the child” and some other actress for Lois Lane. I would actually like to see the death of Superman done but a little different; instead of having all the Supermen appearing, just have the Fortress Superman taking up the mantle and having him kill villains. Supes then comes back and have to take out his doppleganger. This would give the film the dark angle without making Supes dark.

  14. I would also like to see a pre-crisis Superman film. Seeing him pull planets would be amazing.

  15. Well, animated film anyway.

  16. Hmmm, to be frank I’d like to see some edge to Superman. This doesn’t mean he has to be darker, for that we have Batman. Just a little bit less dead boring would be a beginning.

But this is coming from someone who didn’t care to watch Superman Returns or read many or the comics so you’re free to brush it off.

  17. make the kid from returns the child of Brainiac. Either make it to where the Clark that Lois slept with in Superman 2 actually was Brainiac, or make the James Marsden character Brainiac in disguise. Far-fetched maybe but I just don’t want another reboot

  18. I’m torn on this: a lot of people under 25 and over 36 honestly HAVE NO CLUE AS TO THE ORIGIN OF SUPERMAN. I had friends from work who actually didn’t know Superman got his powers from a yellow sun. And, they thought Kryptonite was just a song by 3 Doors Down. That said, I’m honestly kinda tired of seeing the origin story myself. I think you could weave the origin into a trilogy or something. Fill in any blanks as you go along. But, when he says things like “…go another direction no one’s expecting…” I cringe. Sounds like another foreigner wanting to make a pathos Superman. If you’re not gonna do it right, just leave him alone. I’m more sick of WB screwing this character left and right with Singer and Smallville. Enough.

  19. I would do a complete reboot however keep Brandon Routh and John Williams score.

  20. I Think they need a darker story with a darker score, but not too dark, just enough so that it shows that Supes is a bit jaded. They need Anomaly as the villain “The Man of Steel vs A Man of Steel”

  21. @ Vic

Is it just me, or was superman done for, and dying- But the exchange of DNA with his kid when he kissed his forehead what made him come back?

    - And Vic, Yes he was a creepy stalker, But I liked the idea of him and lois having the kid, do they need to explain how(some say it happened when they had sex in S2 when he had no powers)

I liked Kevin Spacey as Lex, but he should have been dealt with within the first 20 minutes, than onto Bigger bader foes.

  22. Just keep Routh!!!

  23. That is the best comment I’ve heard…I think that Brandon Routh was exceptional. When I saw that preview years ago for Superman Returns I thought(unbelieveably)that it was Christopher Reeve!! He sounded just like him and in some shots looked like him. I have been told the same by others as well, so I know it’s not just me. I thought the acting was incredible in he could keep/maintain that character(both) extremely well…so it was dissappointing to find out that his contract had expired.

  24. Well said Gordo.

When he was onscreen as Supes, he had an aura about him, and Routh is perfect for the role. How can they even think about recasting? Who would they get better?

They would certainly have to go with an unknown again.

  25. I researched this on Wikipedia…
“Routh, then 24, had previously already auditioned for director McG and was spotted by Singer after he viewed Routh’s videotaped audition. Singer, who since noted Routh as being the embodiment of “our collective memory of Superman”, was impressed by his resemblance to the comic book icon and found the actor’s humble Mid-western roots perfect for the role, as well as his “combination of vulnerability and confidence” that Singer said reminded him of Christopher Reeve.” Then, “Routh has commented that he feared his performance would too closely resemble that of Christopher Reeve. Routh has said that he hopes to “remind people of Christopher while at the same time making them feel like they’re seeing a totally new Superman”. And he certainly did just that…and also says that he hopes for another opportunity to play the role.

  26. Unforunately for Routh fans, the re-boot won’t bring him back.

If they fastrack a new take on Superman, which they need to do due to the legal implications, they’ll pick somebody new to distance themselves from the established franchise and hopefully move forward with an interconnected DC universe.

I dug Routh as supes personally, it’s too bad they didn’t start fresh with him.

I’m excited about the idea of a Flash movie, Green Lantern and a new Superman all starting around the same time and crossing over a la Marvel Studios. It’d be even more epic to see Bale’s Batman somehow involved but that’s a fanboy desire that’ll never come to fruition :(

  27. They must keep Routh in any case. There were so many stories that could’ve been told but they had to screw it all up with a lackluster scrpit penned by ameteurs. I personally will have trouble seeing someone else as Superman at this point since a “pissed off” Routh against a greater foe would’ve been a sight to behold. They could’ve just tried adapting one of the episodes from the Animated Series.

  28. a re-boot sounds great for me cuz i miss superman. Sr sucked

  29. I’m glad that DC no longer has the right to the orgins of Superman. I’m also glad that they are going with someone new to play Superman and that they are giving it a complete reboot, it’s about time. I’m sure what ecer Mctiegue writes if he is doing Superman will be good, hoping with my fingers grossed.

I think they should do the death and resurrection of Superman.

    my two cents.
