James Gunn is already working on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and appears to have teased the arrival of Quasar. Following the success of Guardians of the Galaxy 2, the team’s roster has now expanded to include newcomer Mantis (Pom Klmentieff), and even though the follow-up is a few years away, seeds have already been sown that give a broad understanding of what the movie will be and who will be included.
The story will follow the events of Avengers: Infinity War and the fourth Avengers movie — both of which will feature the Guardians — and is said to be an end to this iteration of the team. One of the five post-credits scenes to Vol. 2 confirmed Adam Warlock will be present, with Gunn also confirming Elizabeth Debicki’s Ayesha will return.
Gunn has already made it clear that he is working on the script for Vol. 3 and has a general idea of how it will unfold. This would also mean he knows which characters will be included. It is expected that all of the Guardians will return, but their visit to Earth could bring more team members on board. In what first appears to be a random tweet from Gunn, his nostalgia for the brand of VHS player he had as a child indicates Quasar may be coming to the MCU.

Quasar is a hero that fans have been waiting to see brought to the big screen ever since Marvel decided to go cosmic. Wendell Vaughn — the original Quasar — is similar to Star-Lord in that he is from Earth. Gunn has previously made it a point for Quill to be the only Earthling of the group, but recently revealed that other characters from the same planet are on the table for Vol. 3.
Quasar’s powers come from a set of Quantum Bands which imbue him with a variety of powers, from flight to the ability to control all forms of energy. His power set is much higher than any of the current Guardians, and would instantly make him an asset and necessary ally to combat Warlock. Not only that, but as a supremely powerful character, he could be a prime candidate to have a standalone film that continues to push the reach of the Marvel Cosmic Universe.
If Quasar is set to be included in Vol. 3, it will be interesting to see whether or not he is introduced beforehand. Unless Vol. 3 begins with the Guardians leaving Earth or altering Vaughn’s S.H.I.E.L.D.- heavy origin, it would not make sense for him to already be off world. But with the Guardians surely set to visit Earth at some point over the course of the next two Avengers films, he could be introduced in either briefly before having a prominent role in Vol. 3.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently being developed and does not have a release date.
