James Gunn reveals that the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase 4 will be a brand new narrative altogether. While everyone is still excitedly waiting for what the rest of Phase 3 will bring to the franchise before it wraps up, some are already a few steps ahead -- pondering what is next for the famed superhero film series. Now, Gunn has just added another thing to consider for those who are already playing the guessing game with regard to the future of the comic book movie saga.

As we near the end of the long-running narrative arc that the MCU has been on, some want to know what's next much further down the line. We know that the upcoming Avengers films (Infinity War and still untitled Avengers 4) will bring death to some of our principal characters -- passing the mantle other characters that could be the new faces of the brand. However, what is still uncertain is what new overall storyline the MCU will take on next.

Marvel Studios may still be quiet regarding what is to come but Gunn has shared information on what fans can expect. Taking it to his official Twitter account, the Guardians of the Galaxy director replied to a fan when asked regarding Marvel boss Kevin Feige's recent comments about the future of the MCU, explaining that Phase 4 will start a brand new narrative trajectory for the franchise and that the next Guardians film will help kick start it.

1/2 No. Read Kevin Feige’s quotes & not the static around them. It’s the end of one long story & the beginning of another. https://t.co/NA1f0EnQeE— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) October 16, 2017

2/2 And one of the films that will kickstart the new story will be #GotGVol3. https://t.co/NA1f0EnQeE— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) October 16, 2017

This is not the first time that Gunn has talked about his own Marvel franchise being a pivotal part in the future of the MCU. Back in August, he revealed that the third installment of the cosmic series will open up stories that will set-up the next 10-20 years worth of Marvel movies. Between that and his recent statement, it seems moving forward, the comic book films will explore what is out there, while adventures here on Earth will take a back seat. And based on the remaining movie line-up for Phase 3, it does make sense.

With a cosmic-heavy Phase 4, Marvel could opt to get into the Annihilation storyline as its so-called Waves could be a great way to incorporate bits and pieces of the storyline to build-up an ensemble similar to Infinity War and Avengers 4. Sure, it may not be a direct big screen translation, but it could be feasible. The Secret Invasion storyline could also be tied with Annihilation by introducing the Skrulls, and, who knows, maybe a film version of the Illuminati.

Of course, all of this is nothing but mere speculation and it is safe to say that there won't be a concrete roadmap going forward to Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase 4 until we see what goes down in Avengers 4. And with the confirmed films on the docket, Marvel can keep us looking forward to what they have in store in the next few years before we have to worry about what happens after Phase 3 wraps up.
