avatar 2 confirmed James Cameron Confirms Avatar 2

A reader of Ain’t It Cool News attended a press screening of the latest billion dollar film Avatar and sent in an e-mail with a quote that should get fans of James Cameron’s latest work excited.

Before Avatar debuted to critical praise and record-breaking numbers, producer Jon Landau said if the public likes Avatar, there could be a sequel and hinted that the it could explore the interior of Pandora. That was back in September and since we now know the public response to the 3D epic, a sequel is inevitable.

We still don’t know what an Avatar 2 could be about but more recently, James Cameron revealed in an interview that he has ideas plotted out for two sequels and that he envisioned the entire story as a trilogy. Instead of Landau’s idea of the interior, Cameron hinted that we may get to see the other moons around the planet of “Polyphemus” and the mysteries they hold.

Getting back to the main news item here, the screening that the submitter attending came was followed by a Q&A session with Cameron and two of the crew members from the film.

Here’s a snippet from the e-mail AICN posted:

I just saw a Variety Screening Series showing of Avatar at the Arclight theater in Hollywood tonight, followed with a Q&A with James Cameron and two of his visual effects artists. One of the artists mentioned that they’ll never again do this for the first time, meaning that everything they did in the making of Avatar was just a lot of instinctive grasping in the dark. Cameron agreed with him. He also told him to expect the studio to want another one, as they’d passed the billion $ mark. A second film will be easier, as the technology now exists, thanks to the movie. The moderator asked if there *would* be an Avatar sequel. To which Cameron answered that the plan had always been to make a trilogy of films. Finally, Cameron actually said it: “Yes, there’ll be another.”

The important part is the quote at the end where Cameron finally says what everyone has been expecting and speculating since before the film even released. It’s not an official Fox announcement, but if Cameron says it, it must be true. Two billion dollar films on his resume allows him to do whatever he wishes. Oh, and if you haven’t heard, as of today Avatar is the #2 all-time grossing film.

Obviously Fox will want to take advantage of the heavy investment in time and money put into Cameron’s lengthy project and it’s a no-brainer that a film which banks a billion dollars in 17 days will need to get a sequel. With the technology, experience, 3D models and the in-depth development and research into the details of the lush world of Pandora already done, an Avatar sequel will be significantly easier and less costly to produce… Assuming it takes place on Pandora.

The question remains as to whether or not Cameron will again direct; Will he take the reins once again to have full control over the creation of his ideas for the two sequels or will he produce and work on his other projects while another director is brought in?

I’d like to see what Cameron’s idea of Earth in the year 2154 is like and seeing other worlds also intrigues me. What would you like from Avatar 2?

Avatar was an epic success. Can the sequels perform as well?

  1. DrSamBeckett,

You “love” Ghost Rider but come down on Avatar for story and characterization?

    That makes no sense.

  2. @ Rob Keyes

Is it not enough that I now like Avatar? And I’m looking forward to a sequel, I thought Avatar was pretty decent in places.

I though Ghost Rider was fun, Nic Cage brought a lot of kooky personality to the role, it was hardly perfect but what is.

  3. Does anyone else think Quaritch had Jake’s brother killed so he could put a soldier into the Avatar program? Just a thought.

  4. I think I know who’s gonna have the Top3 Worldwide Hits soon!

    nuff said!

  5. Could we all bear in mind that with inflation adjusted Avatar will probably miss out on a top 10 spot.

But I am pleased it has done so well, nothing like saying a sci fi fantasy movie is the highest grossing film of all time. My friends refuse to watch stuff that isnt real. They are morons.

  6. This is great!!!1 I can say I absolutely loved Avatar. It was the best movie I saw all year and pt 2 should be really amazing. The story line sucked, but I was more intrigued by the beauty of the story.

  7. I got the best plot! Trash Alien 3. The sulaco crashes into Pandora and Jake and the Na’vi fight aliens along with Ripley, Hicks and Newt. That way Weaver and Beihn can cash in again lol! Hahaha! Kiddding. Oh and then Jake has and affair with Newt and make a hybrid Na’vi human that gets impregnated by a face hugger and then we have a three way hybrid. I’ll write Cameron tonight so he can start the script asap lol!

  8. yes it could be interesting to see the earth in 2154. the building could be very advance and there only a few forest left on earth. new species of plants and trees. some animals disapear about a 100 years ago and transfort into new kind. the human have new kind of technologies like weapons and other things more advance.i think that could be fun to see in avatar 2.

  9. I would love to find out about the aquatic life in the seas of Pandora, but I feel that Cameron has already told all that he needed to tell about that planet. If the sequel returned there without a VERY good story to tell, then it won’t be as good. Still, I’m curious about what the other moons of Polyphemus hold and and what Polyphemus itself is like. I wonder if the studio published a field guide to Pandora (and the Google search begins).

  10. it would be interesting if jake learn how is brother got killed and for what reason. maybe he did something he was not suppose to do it just a though.

  11. I want a sequal were Jake and naytiri are in it

    this is all I want

and no breaking of the relationship lol

Please cause it would ruin it

  12. @Jacob

Wow, you are so g…. lol, just kidding, I agree, but they do need some relationship tension in the story, but as long as they get back together by the end, lol. But who cares about that now, it’s James Cameron, I want to see action sequences rivaling Aliens and Terminator 2!!

  13. @sully

That would be great, I actually really like Michael Biehn, I wonder what ever happened to him. The last movie I remember him being in was The Rock as the Seal Fireteam leader…

  14. I can just say that I love James Cameron’s films. It’s not the modern techiniques he uses that make them fantastic, but the director’s imagination, his creativity. so I trust in the sequel, like what I have done with every of James’ creations.

  15. I so want an avatar movie with a Na’vi coming to earth. That would be fantastic. plus we’d get to see what earth looked like. in that future

    • It would be impossible for the Na’vi to come to earth because the humans cant breathe on pandora, therefore the Na’vi shouldn’t be able to breathe on earth. And the masks that the humans were would have to be in reverse which is complete bollocks

  16. Another Avatar movie, a trilogy? ,I dont know about this, sounds great but may turn out to be not so great. I really dont want to see AVATAR break Titanics record. TITANIC was a much better film. Avatar is an ok film, but everyone is flocking to see it because of all the talk of the 3D technology, the jaw dropping effects, and i admit they are amazing, but the story itself has been done a thousand times before. And the political references laced throughout the film were low class in my opinion, for example the “shock and awe” and “pre-emptive attack” references could have been left out. But with all the money this film has made there will be more. But will they be any good. The next films will have to shore up on the story, the special effects wont be enough, and leave out the political jabs.

  17. I really really really want a Avatar 2 to come out :D if not then i will be sad :(

  18. I really really really want a Avatar 2 to come out :D if not then i will be sad :(

  19. I have watched AVATAR about 7 times already and next week i am going to watch it in 3-D. My Favourite film so far and I hope it doesn't take too long to make a Sequel because it would be fantastic. The Graphics on the Na'vi are really very realistic it makes me wanna be one. GREAT MOVIE!!!!!!!!!

  20. I CANNOT WAIT!!!

  21. Um… just a question. Will the avatar in “avatar 2″ look like the one in “avatar one”? I prefer the looks of avatar in “avatar 1″ though, hope you can maintain it. It rocks!!!

  22. I really like Avatar, I just hope that in the sequels (if there are any) that there will be all the same characters. I hate it when they leave you to decide what happens to them. I like it when everything happens alright in the end and is set in stone. I mean are the humans on Pandora really expected to just leave their multi trillion dollar mines and bases. If I were the humans Id come back with way more than a space shuttle, lets see something epic!

  23. I think that they should explore more of the underwater life in Avatar 2. They should find a way to somehow have the help of eywa to allow them to breath underwater. Actually, they will probably just have the navi bond with a sea creature because of their ponytail. Then the could breath underwater and explore with ease.

  24. You know that with every defeat the USA has also fought back after a defeat. This defeat may take 5 years to go and tell someone and then 5 years for someone to come back. But in this world if a rich person wants somewthing he pays some body to go take it away from someone else. My step son did not like this movie because it reminded him of the USA taking away land from the Indians. He called it a political movie. If this is so then the USA will send someone back because the rich guys are losing money from their floating rock. So it just makes since that someone will come back in 10 years or so and bring the military fleet and take this moon aways from the navi again and kill them, babies and all. This is the way of the USA, look at the history of this country. There should be another movie to show just how bad this country is and how it treats other worlds, just like in the old Day the Earth Stood Still, and Clatue said that if man extened his waring outside of this world that we would be destoried. This is what the next movie should show.

  25. There’s an extended cut in avatar that shows you what earth is like in the future and where jake sully lives. Your welcome
