James Cameron’s upcoming 3D, CGI-fest, Avatar, recently showed off almost 25 minutes of footage to an excited audience in Hall H at Comic-Con in San Diego. The footage was shown in 3D, with Hall H being equipped for 3D for the first time, and most people who were lucky enough to grab a seat in the 6,000 capacity hall have had pretty amazing things to say about it.
Well today a brand new poster has surfaced for Avatar. Similar to the first banner/poster for the film, it shows off one side of one film’s resident aliens, the Na’vi, this time a female (presumably played by Star Trek’s Zoe Saldana).
In Avatar, the Na’Vi are the creatures that inhabit Pandora, the planet in which most of the film is set. Saldana explained during the Avatar panel at Comic-Con that even before filming started she had to do 7-day-a-week training that included dialect training, archery, weight-lifting and horse riding. I can’t wait to see what her role involves that she needed to do all that for.
Now, there are some rumblings that this poster may be fake, but if it is I think you’ll agree it’s one helluva photoshop job. Anyway, check out the new Avatar poster, featuring our new Uhura in blue:

Is this poster a sign of the extensive marketing campaign that needs to happen in order to hook in the more general, non-geek movie audience? If you notice, at the top of the poster it says, “From The Director of Titanic,” with no mention of Cameron’s Aliens or Terminator 2, which would undoubtedly be bigger lures for the sci-fi/geek audience.
However, the wider movie going audience (even if the Alien and Terminator franchises are still very much known to them) will most likely be more enticed by the mention of Titanic. Let’s not forget Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet’s romance on that huge sinking ship is still the highest grossing film of all time. So I can understand why they’re just playing off of it to attract attention.
I dig that they’re keeping the poster design for Avatar consistent, and hope they continue to do so when more posters inevitably get released. I’m going to guess that if we see any non-Na’Vi posters (i.e. ones that showcase the human side of things) we’ll see the oppossite side of a face with a different color scheme employed. That’d be a fitting ad campaign in my eyes.
