One of the most anticipated movies coming out during the Christmas movie season is undoubtedly James Cameron’s 3-D sci-fi movie Avatar. In fact, it could be argued that Avatar is THE most anticipated movie of 2009. At least, that is what James Cameron and Fox are hoping. They haven’t been shy about drumming up hype for Avatar, either.

Earlier this month we got our first look at a Na’vi toy, the alien race that lives on the planet Pandora where the film is mostly set. While interesting, the toy wasn’t as mind-blowing as I was hoping. Of course it is just a toy, so it may not be a fair representation of the actual creature. Now, Peter Sciretta at /Film, has nabbed a better look at the Na’vi and Avatar star Sam Worthington as Jake Sully.

Lots of blue going on in this photo and I’m not sure what to make of it. The Na’vi looks a lot better in a high res, rather than as a plastic toy.  I haven’t seen any footage from the film yet, so I’m not really sure what I’m supposed to be looking at. To me, it would appear that a Na’vi is in a repair or healing chamber of some sort. Almost anytime someone in a sci-fi movie is in laying in a fluid-filled chamber, they have been hurt and are using it to recover.

I sort of hope I’m wrong in my assumption because three days ago Cameron was talking about how original the Avatar movie is, and I got to be honest: people recovering from wounds in a fluid-filled tube, chamber or tub is not very original. Maybe somebody out there who has seen more footage from the film can shed some light on this?

Do you like the new picture of the Na’vi and are you as excited to see Avatar as the rest of the world seems to be?

Grab your fashionable 3-D shades because Avatar hits theaters December 18th, 2009.

  1. That’s his avatar? This will be sweet!

  2. I think it is a human becoming an avatar. not a healing chamber

  3. Ummm Paul, this movie is called Avatar so…..maybe that’s an avatar body in the tank?!?

  4. I said I hope I was wrong. That’s probably a good assumption though Wickamo. My understanding is Worthington plays a parapalegic so what you say would make total sense. DO they just transfer the his “essence” into the Avatar?

  5. From what I’ve heard and have been able to find online thats exactly what they do paul, every memory up to a given point and i’m almost certain that there human counterparts have total control over them hence there names– Avatars

  6. From what I’ve read on other sites, they are growing their Avatars there. That umbilical chord thing seems to support that more than it being a healing chamber. There also doesn’t appear to be any kind of vital signs monitors or anything, or the obligatory oxygen mask to let them breath while they are healing like in other sci-fi movies…

  7. i dont know looks really cgish to me could be the pic itself i am really not feeling it

  8. Looks good to me.
I am REALLY excited about this film.

  9. @ Kevin

that trailer is fake the movie comes out in december..the trailer says summer

  10. The first trailer for the film will come out on August 21.

  11. What the hell is this, where are Aang and Katara?! 😛
    Just kidding.

  12. Huggybear,The Last Airbender film is coming NEXT summer.
So, you dont have too long to wait for that one either.

  13. Camerons favorite color must be blue.

These “aliens” look like blue elfs.

  14. Well, if he would have picked any other color, then the assumption of his favorite color would just shift to that color… Maybe he should have made them transparent? lol

That would have saved him a lot of time and money on the special effects…

  15. So is the basic premise of the film that the human minds are transferred to these creatures so that they can live on another world with an ammonia atmosphere?

  16. That’s part of the film, but we’ll have to wait for the trailer next thursday the 20th to see what it’s about.

  17. I hope that is a really early cgi shot. I’m not impressed at all with it so far.

  18. for one, this is photoreal if this creature existed in real life so its kind of confusing to me for people to think otherwise. If you want to be fully informed on all things AVATAR than go to
But this is not Jake Sully’s Avatar. This is David Joel Moore’s Avatar in the tank. And these are transposed pictures, not from an actual scene. When you watch the movie and see that the faces are 100% Actor driven you WILL feel for them and believe them to be alive as much as you are. Trust me

  19. MMMMmmmmmm,….. Avatar and a smidge of cream cheese on melba toast = yummy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. Wow, that’s a weird thing in there…

  21. Very odd indeed…

  22. Any word on the rating for this…?

  23. PG-13 for sure.

  24. Not to say pg-13 movies are bad but still i wanted that r-rating

  25. Not even because i want to see blood, guts and or swearing… I just don’t want to hear kids while i’m watching this movie…lol.

  26. Watch it during a weekday, that’s what I do, lol. Although it’ll be winter break by then, so might not matter, but still would be better because parents still have to work so at least there’ll be fewer parents bringing their kids during the week than the weekend…
