Freddy Rorschach Kruger To Play Sinestro?

Grinding on the rumor mill… Harry over at Ain’t It Cool News is always popping up with some interesting rumors that, more often than not, prove to be true. Last time it was setting the story straight on the next Rambo movie and this time he’s going one better and calling the name of the person Green Lantern director Martin Campbell may be choosing to put on the yellow suit and purple make-up as Sinestro – none other than Jackie Earle Haley!

A few weeks back, Screen Rant’s Kofi Outlaw ran an article fantasy casting Sinestro and based on the feedback from our readers, Hugo Weaving was the favorite. Well, if you ever needed proof that Hollywood rarely pays attention to fans then this would be it. I trolled back through the comments and nowhere did anyone mention Jackie Earle Haley as a possible choice, oddly enough Dakota Fanning and Eric McCormack both made the list though.

Remember, even though Harry is saying his source is “pretty reliable“, he is filing this news under rumor so if it doesn’t turn out to be the case (which would very much surprise me) then all the “tweeting”, emailing, and blogging will have been for naught and we’ll be back in a holding pattern.

It is slightly puzzling that just yesterday we got wind of Warner Bros pulling the Green Lantern production out of Australia due to economic reasons and now we catch a sniff of casting rumors. But maybe it isn’t that puzzling because casting calls were held just a couple of weeks ago and it would be right about now that decisions would start being made on who will play who.

Another rumor Harry got from the same source, audiences may very well see a cameo from Superman in the Green Lantern. This last statement is what has me thinking the whole thing could be snipe hunt. We talked about it last year, but a lot has happened to Supes since then. Brandon Routh’s contract expired; DC lost the rights to Superman’s origins and then announced they had no plans to move forward with a new Superman movie. This makes it difficult to throw in a Clark Kent cameo (rumored last year) if they haven’t figured out who will play the Man of Steel for the next movie.

So, unless the cameo consists only of a name drop or showing Superman from the back, I don’t see what actor they have right now to make the appearance. Either way, it sure does makes for interesting blog-fodder and if it turns out to be true, then I’m sure fanboys across the nation and the world will want to weigh in on the casting choice.

What do you think of the possibility of Jackie Earle Haley playing Sinestro and Superman making a cameo appearance in the Green Lantern movie?

Green Lantern is slated for a summer 2011 release.

  1. JEH as Sinestro cool, Superman in GL double cool

  2. Also there is plenty of time for DC/WB/Whomever to find someone to play Clark/Supes in a couple minute/second part.

  3. Awful idea for JEH to play Sinestro…I guess he comes a lot cheaper than Hugo Weaving..

  4. He is going to look so tiny next to reynolds

  5. @ da-fadge

That’s exactly what I was thinking. Great actor, but short in stature for Sinestro. Hugo Weaving for the win!

  6. I love JEH, but he’s a bad choice. And it’s more like Rorschach as Sinestro to comix fans….

  7. Studio goes cheap – what a surprise.

Superman appearance would be cool though. But for what reason? To save the day? He’s not the hero.

  8. yes he is agreat actor but he is to short and not right for the part hugo fits everything about sinestro i mean he even looks like him in the comics. and his acting is allways up to par.

  9. Jeff Goldblum!!! JEH was cook in watchmen but that was mostly because it was a cool part! A Superman cameo is the only reason I will watch this film, will it be Routh or Welling???

  10. I also think he’s not the best choice, even though he’s a good actor. Yes, Hugo Weaving would nail the role.

  11. Agree with every one else. While he’s got the acting chops to play the part well, he’s way too short and is not going to come off as imposing.

Personally I’m against Weaving for the part, too, just because I think casting actors who are famous for playing a villain as a villain comes off as rather uninspired. I really don’t have any alternative in mind, but I did like the idea of Guy Pearce someone brought up way back in the Sinestro thread.

  12. I think it might be a baseless rumor ,
    but we shall see .
    I agree with Paul,
Its the Superman thing that makes me think its fishy.
    Thats old .
If the same source is treating the Superman thing as new info then I think the Sinestro part might be suspect as well.
I dont have an opinion on who should play Sinestro.
Time will tell if this is true.

  13. There is only 1 person that could bring the character of Sinestro to life. Ladies and gentleman I give you……DANIEL DAY-LEWIS.

  14. I can see it working, but Jeremy Irons would still be my first choice. It’s the voice

  15. I’m struggling to remember a time when “fan favourite” ever resulted in a solid casting decision.

Heath Ledger for The Joker…? Don’t remember that suggestion…
    Hugh Jackman as Wolverine…? Nope.
Robert Downey Jr. in the Iron Man suit? Erm… not that I recall.

  16. Well, did you see if a superman cameo made sense in “public enemies” ? Well, they should do what they can to follow the dayview from the comics, but i really want to see another superman film! i miss superman feeling the dark prehensive failure that superman returns was tipping out since singer was under the age of 40 and didn`t know how to direct.

  17. This movie is sounding worse by the second, if it gets made it will be god awful. Instead of wasting all the money on this stinking pile that no one will go to see, get a decent script together and get a proper Superman movie made!!!! I don’t want to see a rent a hero like Green Lantern. I want to see Superman flying over Metropolis with Lois Lane in his arms.

  18. maybe it won`t be time for Superman to have a cameo until later.

  19. “i miss superman feeling the dark prehensive failure that superman returns was tipping out since singer was under the age of 40 and didn’t know how to direct.”

Could you expand on that, John K? I have no idea what you meant there.

  20. Has anyone thought the “Superman cameo” could just be the (rather old) news about Clark Kent being a potential Green Lantern in a brief scene where the ring bypasses him before settling on Hal Jordan?

  21. all the words before tipping just meant i miss Superman.

After that i meant that i notice usually it`s only directors who are 40 years old who can direct superhero movies. because they probably haven`t spent enough years learning the basic standards. Seriously, even Nolan can`t direct. The Batman films weren`t that great. Though, maybe i`m wrong. Maybe somme directors that are in their mid or late 30`s may have had enough experience to know how to shoot the quantities. You might not understand the point i`m trying to make.
