With over a decade gone by since Ben Affleck played CIA analyst Jack Ryan in The Sum of All Fears, the time is ripe once more to bring one of Tom Clancy’s best-known characters back to the big screen for the start of a franchise. Kicking things off again in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is Chris Pine, fresh off the successful summer release of Star Trek Into Darkness and ready to take on the role that’s previously been played not only by Affleck, but also by Harrison Ford and Alec Baldwin.
A global trailer for Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit has just launched ahead of the film’s December release. It’s disappointingly similar to the first trailer that we saw earlier this month, featuring a lot of the same clips, but there’s enough new material in there to be worth watching for fans of Clancy’s work and of previous Jack Ryan movies like The Hunt for Red October and Patriot Games.
The desk job of a CIA analyst wouldn’t look all that exciting in a trailer, so before too long Jack goes from analyst to operator and is embroiled in an international scheme involving exploding helicopters, motorcycle chases, exploding buildings, shootouts and even more explosions. The main plot involves the two go-to action movie threats, terrorists and Russians, with the lead Russian terrorist played by director Kenneth Branagh. Jack’s wife Cathy (Keira Knightley) also gets involved in the action, though if Jack’s Batman-esque cry of “Where is she?” is anything to go by then her part in the plan doesn’t go completely smoothly.
There’s some potential for confusion between Jack Ryan: Shadow Agent and last year’s thriller Jack Reacher, which might be why Branagh’s movie has been given the subtitle treatment. Jack Reacher, which was based on Lee Child’s novels and starred Tom Cruise as the eponymous military policeman, was only a modest success at the box office and is probably not going to get a sequel. On the bright side, this at least means that we won’t have Jack Ryan and Jack Reacher movies released side-by-side and causing mix-ups.
Do you think that Branagh’s movie stands a better chance of kicking off a real franchise? Tell us in the comments if this new trailer has inspired you to see Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit in theaters.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is set for release on December 25th, 2013.
