The first big action blockbuster of 2014 arrives in the form of Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, a reboot of the franchise centered around the character created by the late Tom Clancy, who has been featured in four previous films – The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger and the not-so-popular Sum of All Fears.
Star Trek star Chris Pine steps into the role of Ryan, in a story that involves a Russian mogul’s (Kenneth Branagh) attempt to cripple the US through economic means. When Ryan, a sharp-minded CIA analyst, stumbles upon the numbers game that will bring our country to its knees… well, as you can see in the clip above, things go from intellectual to physical rather quickly.
If you caught our Shadow Recruit Preview article about a month back, then you may already be familiar with the “megaclip” you just watched. We described the overall preview as a “Brainy Bourne Experience” and that’s just what it seems to be: the same kinetic and brutal action established by the Bourne films, married to a more intelligent protagonist and intricate cat-and-mouse game being played between Jack and the villains, Jack and his mentor William Harper (Kevin Costner), Jack and his wife Cathy (Keira Knightley)… you get the idea.
Kenneth Branagh directs as well as starring as the villain, and after his work on Marvel’s Thor there is a fair expectation that he can deliver a satisfying blockbuster actioner. The January release date would seem to be an ominous sign – but with so few promising Winter 2014 films to choose from, Shadow Recruit is in prime position to do solid numbers at the box office and deliver the rush that fans of the genre are craving.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit will be in theaters on January 17, 2014.
