Summer 2012 is already pretty jam-packed for the comic book crowd, what with The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, Superman: Man of Steel and The Amazing Spider-Man already prepped to hit theaters. Now New Line/Warner Bros. have slated two more films – neither of which involves costumed vigilantes, sadly – for release during the season: Jack the Giant Killer and Rock of Ages.
The former is director Bryan Singer’s re-fashioning of the classic fairy tale “Jack and the Beanstalk”, while the latter is Hairspray filmmaker Adam Shankman’s cinematic adaptation of a hit Broadway musical.
Rock of Ages is now scheduled to arrive in theaters next summer on June 1st, where it will compete against Judd Apatow’s as-yet untitled Knocked Up spinoff. The humorous musical will star Tom Cruise as Stacee Jaxx, an arrogant and aging ’80s rock star who’s recruited for one last performance by Dennis Dupree (Alec Baldwin), in order to save Dupree’s beloved Bourbon Room club.
Jack the Giant Killer will hit theaters two weeks after Rock of Ages on June 15th, which is currently the same date set for next summer’s customary Adam Sandler comedy, I Hate You Dad. The fantasy adventure stars X-Men: First Class‘ Nicholas Hoult as a poor farmboy who sets out to rescue his could-be true love, the princess Isabella (Eleanor Tomlinson), after she is seemingly kidnapped by a monstrous, two-headed giant.
Shankman and Iron Man 2 writer Justin Theroux have been fine-tuning (pun intended) original Rock of Ages creator Chris D’Arienzo’s music book for the film adaptation. The musical boasts a nice collection of popular ’80s tunes, but also a rather conventional plot and all-too-familiar character tropes as well.
Singer’s fairy tale project also features a very traditional storyline, but will be brought to life by a great collection of character actors (including the recent addition of Ian McShane) and was scripted by an unusual mix of talents: Oscar-winner Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects), Mark Bomback (Live Free or Die Hard), and Darren Lemke (Shrek Forever After).
To reiterate – Rock of Ages will hit theaters on June 1st, 2012 and Jack the Giant Killer will follow two weeks later on June 15th. Which one (if either) are you planning to check out?
