Warner Bros. has announced its new (and reshuffled) release date schedule, which concerns two Oscar baiting titles, one intriguing science-fiction project, and a sequel that many will be surprised to hear is even being made.

The films in question are: J. Edgar, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, Gravity, and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, the followup to the 2008 3D Journey to the Center of the Earth movie.

J. Edgar is Clint Eastwood’s biographical drama about the life of the infamous FBI founder, as brought to life by Leonardo DiCaprio. The Hoover pic will begin a limited theatrical release in the U.S. on November 9th, 2011, but will expand wide two days later on the 11th.

With an impressive cast that includes DiCaprio, Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, and Judi Dench, along with Jeffrey Donavan, Josh Lucas, and Miles Fisher – not to mention, Eastwood at the helm and Oscar-winner Dustin Lance Black (Milk) handling the screenplay – J. Edgar is definitely one to keep an eye out for this awards season.

Similarly, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (which is now slated for release on Christmas Day 2011) might as well have “There Will Be Oscar Nods” as a subtitle. The film stars the likes of Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, John Goodman, Viola Davis, Jeffrey Wright, James Gandolfini, and Max von Sydow.

It was also scripted by Oscar-winner Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), working from the popular novel by Jonathan Safran Foer, and directed by Stephen Daldry (The Hours, The Reader). Did we also mention that Extremely Loud revolves around a young boy who goes on a cathartic journey after losing his father in the September 11th terrorist attacks?

In case it wasn’t clear, both J. Edgar and Extremely Loud are positioning themselves to hit it off with the film critic community this fall/winter.

DiCaprio as J. Edgar Hoover

Alfonso Cuarón’s expensive thriller Gravity will eventually reach theaters on November 21st, 2012. The film marks the director’s return to the sci-fi genre after his critical hit Children of Men, and promises to be quite the technical feat, boasting loads of eye-popping 3D visuals and more of Cuarón’s trademark complicated long takes/sequence shots. Sandra Bullock will star as an astronaut, struggling to return home to Earth after a meteor shower cripples her spaceship and leaves all but one other member of her crew (George Clooney) dead.

Lastly, there’s the punily-titled Journey to the Center of the Earth sequel, which stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Josh Hutcherson (Peeta in next year’s Hunger Games movie), Michael Caine, and High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens. Not an awards contender, obviously, but Warner Bros. is hoping it turns a tidy profit when it opens on February 10th, 2012, where it will have to compete with the re-release of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace on 3D screens.

To reiterate: J. Edgar will hit U.S. theaters first, in limited release on November 9th, 2011 before expanding wide two days later.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close will arrive here in the States on December 25th, 2011.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island arrives in 2D and 3D theaters on February 10th, 2012.

Gravity will also hit 2D and 3D screens later next year on November 21st, 2012.

  1. Did I read that correctly?! Star Wars: The Phantom Menace re-release in 3D. WHAT?! Seriously, as if the Blu-Ray Complete Saga wasn’t expensive enough, I bet they will be releasing a Blu-Ray Complete Saga in 3D this time next year…

  2. So we get to watch crappy 3D enhance an already crappy film and really accentuate how bad Jar-Jar and Yippie Skywalker ruined the mystical franchise (took us 16 years to get over the Ewoks that’s for sure).

  3. I wonder what the point is of releasing J. Edgar on a Wednesday for limited release and then giving it a wide release, why not just the wide release?

Glad to hear some news on Gravity, excited about that one.

  4. Is the cast of J Edgar aside from DiCaprio who is the obvious lead listed in alphabetical or the official credited order? If not why is an Armie Hammer Who listed before the famed Naomi Watts and Judi Dench? Regards.
