We’re only a few weeks away from the return of Liv Moore (Rose McIver) and Team Z on The CW, as iZombie is back for its third season. Promo for the comic book zombie comedy has so far focused heavily on the upcoming war between zombies and humans, with a revolution-inspired poster, as well as a teaser trailer and short promo that both emphasis the idea that humans are “the enemy.” Vivian Stoll (Andrea Savage) and her organization feature heavily as well, making it look like we are going to be seeing a whole lot of human/zombie conflict in this upcoming season.
However, the new extended trailer for season 3 has now been released, and it is all about solving murders and eating brains.
The trailer, posted by The CW, is just over one minute and 20 seconds long (although the video includes an extra 20 seconds of channel promo as well), and comes with the kind of upbeat soundtrack that the show is known for using. It includes scenes of Liv and Detective Babineaux (Malcolm Goodwin) in the morgue, doing their usual murder-solving activities. We also see Major (Robert Buckley) getting in on the brain-eating, murder-solving action with some “teenage girl brains,” and predictable hilarity ensues. Vivian Stoll and her crew do make an appearance, but the majority of the trailer is focused on dancing, one-liners, and having fun.
This trailer does use some of the same footage and taglines that previous teasers have, but it’s nice to see that the third season will not stray too far from the original, episodic style of the show. It looks like the show will strike a great balance in season 3, keeping the lighthearted mystery-solving elements (along with a cute Scooby Doo reference), while still allowing Liv’s place in the world of zombies to develop. We also see quite a few shots of Liv’s roommate Peyton (Aly Michalka) with Blaine (David Anders), which is bound to make for some interesting viewing, especially given Blaine’s complicated zombie/human/amnesiac arc in season 2.
Although the trailer looks fantastic, it still leaves us with a whole lot of questions – especially about Vivian Stoll and the aftermath of the Max Rager party. Liv appears to be staying focused on her new life as a zombie and crime-solver, but we know that Stoll is gearing up for a fight, and Liv and her friends are going to have to take a side at some point. After nearly a year off the air, it may also be difficult to get viewers back on board, although there is a dedicated fanbase who can’t wait to see iZombie back on the small screen.
iZombie season 3 premieres Tuesday, April 4 at 9pm on The CW.
