Is Weta In (Justice) League With George Miller?

justice league logo Is Weta In (Justice) League With George Miller? It’s on, it’s off and it’s on again. What is the craic with George Miller’s Justice League? For those of you that are wondering “craic” is an Irish term for news or gossip.

Superherohype has posted a story from The Dominion Post via stuff.co.nz that indicates Weta Workshop is already building the costumes for DC’s superhero team-up film.

One of the film’s producers, Barrie Osborne is quoted as saying:

“They are doing all the costumes and they’re doing a brilliant job”.

This quote implies that they have indeed started building, or at least designing the costumes – but the article also mentions that no budget has been announced and we know that no filming date has been set, so what is the score?

Well, the last we heard the film was on hold until the end of the writers’ strike. So unless the film will be written-produced and directed by David Letterman, it will be quite a while in coming.

I have no doubt that someone, somewhere is beavering away on this project, but it doesn’t seem to have any real force behind it. All of the stories that we hear about casting are never confirmed. Will the film be live-action or will it be CGI? Nobody seems to know.

Also, what amazing designs could Weta be working on? Does Superman‘s costume really need that much designing? If it does, pay me and I’ll design it in five minutes.

Osborne also says:

“George Miller has a great take on the material, so it elevates it to something that’s not a comic-book movie.”

He’d better… what I’ve heard about this project so far sounds like hell on earth. Or, to make a Superman reference: Doomsday!

  1. Thanx for the JLA post,Vic. :-) I try to find out as much new news on the film as I can everyday, cuz I’m a HUGE JLA fan!

The film is LIVE ACTION,but blends heavy amounts of CGI and motion-capture techniques in the film.

The shooting date was announced some time ago as being February 11th,2008,and we will surely see the REAl cast by then. That or I’m guessing they won’t let us know who’s wearing the capes and tights until they release some early pictures of the film.

The release date is summer 2009.

George Miller has said that his film is moving along well,so apparently it HASN’T been affected by the strike. (yet)

LOL,about the Superman costumes,Vic! Although I am a cartoonist, give me that job and I’ll have ALL the League’s costumes designed in 5 minutes.
And the Batman suit will be one that EVERYONE will like too! ;-)

They say the job they are doing on the costumes are great, but I hope they aren’t doing anything radical and stupid to them. Just keep the color/shade schemes the same or similar, keep the suits flexible and authentic, and overall, keep the suits RESPECTFUL of the source material. Don’t change the characters’ symbols/logos/embloms drastically or ADD areas or take away areas on the suits, even if you think it’s “dumb” (like a leotard,I wouldn’t wear one,but I will always expect Superman,Batman, and Martian Manhunter to be in one because that’s the way they’ve ALWAYS looked,so don’t eff with the originals,’kay?). Other than that, you wanna make the suits outa some special type material with little designs in it or rivots or a bulletproof type fabric,go right ahead. Just don’t forget what the characters are supposed to look like. Anything that violates that is Sugar Honey Iced Tea,ya smell me? ;-)

They’ve got some of the top talent in the biz working on this film, they just need to not screw the casting up. And if that means spend an extra month on casting then do it,a film like this is to big to mess up.

Oh,and dear God,PLEASE dont let it be 90 minutes!!! A film of this proportion NEEDS to be at LEAST 2 hours!!! So do 2 hr. and 15-30 minutes,OK,WB?

  2. Honestly…putting asside Osborne’s comments, this is old news we’ve known for months. We already knew that WETA was designing the costumes.

I can only imagine this is hitting all the Internet film sites because its a slow news day. That…and WB is trying to drum up some (positive) news towards JLA.

That said, I still don’t think this film is going to get made. At least this version we’ve been hearing about for months featuring diaper-clad kids playing adult superheroes for Summer 2009 release.

You can consider me interested in this film when WB comes to their senses (which they will eventually!) and casts Routh and Bale as Supes and Bats…which they should have done to begin with!

  3. Well DC will be feeling it if Marvel pulls off their Iron Man/Hulk crossover and then fires up an Avengers movie with Robert Downey, Ed Norton, and Samuel Jackson.

  4. well, there wont be an Avengers film until certain other films come out first. Iron Man, Hulk, maybe Thor, and Thor wontout be until after the writers strike. as to other Pre Avenger films Ant Man is even a possibilty.
    Its going to be awhile.

  5. Well, this IS being reported on all the major movie sites today as being confirmed and not just a rumor.

    Vic

  6. Great posts you guys !!
    ^
WB. really just hire KEL I know you would get your moneys worth! Don’t just hire him for the costumes hire him to write and direct as well.
    ^
Really agree that they need Bale and Routh in this one as well FilmnerdJamie.
    ^
And I really think this is going to be a Marvel year Shane!!! At least in film…

  7. Maybe it’s just me, but the wording re: WETA is a little ambiguous. “They’re doing the costumes and they’re doing a fantastic job” could mean “they’re going to do the costumes and they’re going to do a fantastic job because they’re fantastic.” Or Osbourne is just getting terribly ahead of himself.

  8. LOL,Steve!! Thanx bud. :-D

And I agree, this year is gonna be a great one for Marvel.

I’m still looking forward to DC’s Shazam, everything I’ve heard about it so far sounds really excellent. And I say they should cast Brandon Molale as Capt. Marvel in it,he even said he was interested in an interview online!! He totally looks the guy.

I hope we get a Flash film and a GL Hal Jordan film soon as well. Doom Patrol would be neat too.

I’m also seeing the Spirit next january. :-)
