The months of January to April are pretty much when studios dump their garbage on the movie-going public.
So when news broke a few months back that Bryan Singer’s WWII thriller Valkyrie was being pushed back to a February 13, 2009 release, I assumed that the film was in fact going to be a piece of cinematic garbage.
Well maybe I simply jumped to conclusions too quickly…

Speaking on his blog, Variety big-cheese Peter Bart (aka the “other Peter” on AMC’s Sunday Morning Shootout) had this to say on the matter:
“Although the film has yet to be completed, several people I trust have seen ‘Valkyrie’ and testify that it’s a superb thriller. ‘Bryan Singer is back in form,’ says one source, referring to the ‘Valkyrie’ director whose last film was ‘Superman Returns.’”
Bart also confirms that three additional sequences will be filmed within the next three weeks including the origin of Cruise’s Von Stauffenberg’s injuries (i.e. the eye-patch).
The funny thing is that I was just told last week by a buddy/contact that the pick-ups would be shot in a few weeks. Weird.
Maybe there’s hope for this film after all…

Well that’s good to hear. I’m a Tom Cruise fan and I was getting worried on why it was being pushed back. I was hoping to see this movie this summer, but I guess it’ll make it that much more enjoyable in Feb.
I always worried this would bomb but Bryan Singer is the man, and wouldn’t let this suck. I’ll give him all the credit in the world for NOT doing X3 and doing superman (X3 was the biggest disappointment ever and superman was great)
Cruise NEVER bomb, his last lead part was MI:III and a huge hit worldwilde, he’s a great acor also. As everyone with a brain agree.

Well, in truth the whole story wasn’t actually THAT glorious - including its “protagonists”.
More about a bunch of conservative, nationalistic, stuck-up generals and high ranking officers that couldn’t socially interact with normal soldiers since although the German military had some of the of most advanced technology and logistics of its time it also had a hierarchy inherited from the former German Empire (the “Kaiserreich”) that would separate officers from normal soldiers like they were from a different planet.
If those “heroes” (don’t you ever forget: they fully participated in all the war crimes against Poland and the other countries Nazi Germany attacked!) would have staged a plot including any substantial participation of their subjects they would have succeeded!
So this was more like a “palace revolution” by proud and (mostly) spineless opportunists to get rid of their incompetent leader Adolf Hitler and NOT a heroic attempt to rid the world of an insane dictator bent on destroying as much of the world and killing as many people as possible before finally committing suicide!
Final note: If Stauffenberg would have been a real hero he would have detonated the bomb himself as close as possible to Hitler to make sure the job get’s done! But like the rest of his gang he wasn’t too strong a believer in the “righteousness” of their plan to sacrifice his own life.

Regarding some of the messages belittling the Stauffenberg plot,…it’s easy for an armchair historian using hindsight and the safety of over 60 years after the event to scoff at what happened. If, however, one can truly put oneself in that world, knowing how far Hitler had gone, and the many previous plots which had failed, one realizes the tremendous odds against success, the guts it took to plan and then execute it, and the strength of character these men had.They are true heroes, it’s sad when we can’t recognize the likes of them.
