Is Dirty Harry Back?
Mar 20, 2008 by Niall Browne
When I first saw this news I almost passed out. The thought of Clint Eastwood making a return to his most iconic character is nothing short of mind blowing.
Yesterday it was announced that Clint Eastwood would star and direct a movie called Gran Torino, a film that would be released in December. Apart from these facts nothing else was known.
Until now.
AICN has a scooper who says that Gran Torino is a:
“thriller about a killer that drives a certain torino. His 1972 Ford Gran Torino is the only thing the police have on him. A retired police lieutenant, one Harry Callahan, makes it his mission to track down the culprit when two young police officers, one Callahan’s grandson, are shot and killed by the guy.”
In case you don’t know: Harry Callahan is Dirty Harry!
In a word: “WOW.”
By strange coincidence the other day I bought a Dirty Harry soundtrack album on Vinyl, and I was thinking about how good the Dirty Harry films were. Okay, the last one or two weren’t great, but they’re still good cop movies.
The time is right for a new Dirty Harry. If Rambo, Indy and John McClane can come back, then so can Harry. Clint might be old, but the dude can still pack a punch. There have been rumors for years that Warner Bros. wanted to get either a sequel made or restart the franchise. With Clint voicing the Dirty Harry video game, maybe he realized how much he liked the character. The plot to this film (if the AICN scoop is the plot) has a 1970′s vibe to it, it’s very similar to the Zodiac killer, a real life event that influenced the first Dirty Harry film.
There is no official confirmation if Gran Torino is a new Dirty Harry film, all this is wild speculation from a chap who said:
“I recently advertised my 1974 ford grand torino classic original for sale in the local here, and within 24 hours had someone from Village Roadshow Pictures interested in having a look at it. He came. He wasn’t interested for numerous reasons (probably the modifications). He told me they were looking for the right car for a new Clint Eastwood movie”.
To heighten your experience of Dirty Harry check out the 1980′s comedy show Sledge Hammer!. It’s a pastiche of the Dirty Harry movies, and one of the greatest television shows of all time. Buy the DVD! Okay, that’s my DVD plug over for today.
This could be nothing, however it could be the best news that I’ve heard since Indy 4 went into production.
I will keep you posted on whatever happens next. Pray people, pray.
What do you think – can we go another Dirty Harry film?

Please Be True
Holly 44 magnums, for a second there I thought Dirty Harry was getting a reboot with probable actor Christian Bale…
This would be cool but they better get going Clint is getting old.
Sledge Hammer, great show!!!
I bought the dvds years ago. That way I could throw out all the vhs tapes I had on that show.
Hey, if Stallone can do “Death Wish”…
Although he’s looking much better than Clint (who I think is older).
The problem with a movie like this is that it’s one of those that defined a genre that in turn has become a cliche. How you revisit the original and make it great, I’m not sure.
Vic
Stallone can do Death Wish but will anyone care. All he’s good for it seems is staring in films where he kills people…
I’m betting Harrison Ford incouraged Clint to revist Callahan. I know there good freinds.
I don’t know if I would pay to see another Dirty Harry film but I would prb check the dvd if it looks good.
I LOVED the Dirty Harry films, but this is just ridiculous!! I mean Clint is pushing 80!! How believeable can it be having an 80 yr old guy kicking someone’s butt!! Don’t get me wrong, I really like Clint Eastwood, but this is ONE of those characters where you just let it BE!!!
Uh-uh.. I know what you’re thinking.. did he fire six shots or only five?
Looks like Eastwood really wants to use up all six shots that he has with a sixth Dirty Harry movie!
However, it won’t be a true Dirty Harry movie unless there’s a Lalo Schriffin soundtrack to go with it!
Groan.
An 80-year old Dirty Harry…
OK, but if the movie centers about a serial killer who drives an ancient, very large, noticeable, gas-guzzling American car… the writer should be fired.
Dave_Violence, check out Zodiac if you can. Its got your name written all over it.
Downey Jr is also real good in that one. And no he’s not the Zodiac.
It would be fantastic to have one last “Dirty Harry” film. Sure Clint is old, but I wouldn’t expect Harry to be the same, doing the same types of things. Just to have Harry back at all would be nothing short of amazing. Another actor playing Callahan just wouldn’t work; this isn’t James Bond…
