Iron Man (Nearly) Invincible At The Box Office

iron-man-batman.jpg“B-list superhero”?

“Grand Theft Auto IV”?

I say to you: “HA!”

Iron Man had the 10th biggest box office opening weekend, EVER (and that’s not even including the Thursday sneak preview showings). It topped $100 million on this past weekend.

It kicked butt on every level. Audiences loved it, Rotten Tomatoes has it 94% positive and the per screen average was over $24,000 (which means you can’t attribute the boffo box office to just the fact it was released on a gazillion screens).

In addition it’s opening weeked grosses were double that of both Batman Begins and Superman Returns, plus it earned more than Spider-Man 2 and the first two X-Men movies on their opening weekends.

Maybe the next time I tell you a movie is going to be awesome month after month after month prior to its release, you’ll pay attention, eh? :-)

  1. One thing I havnt heard mentioned about Iron Man is how much of a Patriotic film it is.
They were smart to keep the name of the terrorist group obscure and not pin them down to a country.

    Man that script was tight!!!
And I loved how they used cell phones in the film.
    Very clever.

  2. As luck would have it, i just finished listening to the Hugh Hewitt Show .
His final guest of the day was Michael ward author of Planet Narnia
ward theorizes that C.S. Lewis was fascinated by medieval cosmology .
Ward says Lewis based the seven chronicles on what medieval cosmologists refer to as the seven heavens the seven planets Jupiter Mars Sol Luna Venus Mercury and Saturn .
ward Said Prince Caspian represents Mars because of its military themes.
I thought some people might be intersted.
Peace and apologies if I offended anyone earlier.

  3. Shane, we’re good. Just remember to use smileys. I always do when there’a any doubt as to the intent of a statement. :-)

Cyber, yeah, I added a postscript to my review telling people to hang around until the very, very end.

  4. I thought Spiderman 2 broke records for opening weekend with 114 million dollars?

  5. That being said, I didn’t really know much about Iron Man before I went to see the movie (I didn’t pay any attention to the ads because I didn’t want “Iron Man Overload”), This movie is AWESOME and completely kicks A**!!! I wish I was Tony Stark! I’m glad they’re tying everything up together with the whole S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers! Kudos to Favreau for an incredibly created film!
