You tell em, Vic! I’m going as far to say that Speed Racer will be number 2 next weekend because IM will still hold supremacy. Now the weekend after that, Prince Caspian may take the top spot; and we all know what Indy will do.

SUPEROIR TECHNOLOGY! Sorry, but that was Capcom IM finishing saying. Love the pic for this Rant! Saw it three times this weekend and I live in the Derby city. My wife whom knows nothing about IM loved it and said she can’t wait for the sequel. Kahless, as much as I love IM, I believe Speed Racer will hold his own to hold off IM for first next week with 150mil over the next weekend. IM will make 70mil next week.

I BELIEVE LORD VIC, I BELIEVE!! I CAN SEE THE LIGHT!!!

Actually I can… and it’s the sun trying to burn a hole in my eye or giving me a permanent tan.

Seriously though, I loved Iron man… When the movie was over and done with, I had the I AM IRON MAN music in my head playing over and over and over and over and so and so forth…

But, to be honest, I can’t wait to see the sequel. Tony Stark has to be one of the coolest Super heroes out there today.

We’ll see just how well Batman can do… but Iron Man sure put the bar high for the up and coming movies this summer.

Speed Racer might provide some competition,
You never know.
lets say Iron Man makes about 53 million next weekend you think Speed Racer will do less then that?

over at nikki finkes they have a paramount insider quoted as saying ” it beat Will Smith and Jesus” referring to both I AM Legend and Passion of the christ LOL

Adrian, you might be right, but I am thinking that word-of-mouth may just be the thing that puts IM over SR. I know that here, at my job, people are shaking their heads about SR even though I tell them it will be hugh but no one is shaking their heads about IM.

We’ve got a Marvel movie update article coming later today talking about their slate.

You know it’s funny… me and my movie site buddies think Speed Racer is going to be really big, but people don’t seem to fired up about it. I guess we’l find out soon enough.

And I’m thinking $50-60MM for Iron Man next weekend.

Vic, I bet the biggest reason Speed Racer will hit the 100mils will be the kiddo appeal. IMHO,the strange thing is that the trailers on Incredible Hulk and Hellboy have me more pumped then TDK or Indy4.

who cares about someone driving fast on a racetrack most boaring thing ever!!! -maybe kids will go see it, cause off.. ehh mattew fox? -did anyone see this as a kid? I know that in japan, in manga sports and racing and stupid stuff like that is popular - like in the 80’s here in Norway they had fotball(soccer) comics from england, how lame is that….

I mean, if I’m gonna see someone race- why not see a race? a movie about a race, come on…

Now a space battle or a spuerhero, that I would want to see, but I can’t so I watch Movies about them…

It’s like driven(stallone), -what was the point?

For me, I won’t watch it again just to boost the cume but will watch it again because it’s a fantastic film. And about Stallone and Driven, I agree….what was the point. :o)

did someone say speedracer will do well? are you joking, I guarantee you it will not, lol.

Neither will Narnia since the first one was week. Indy will be huge, Batman will be huge

johnny-K said,

I would not see it to boost numbers eighter…. - but is’t the best movie of the year so far… so we should go see it again cause of that….

I think the real weak link in May could be Prince Caspian.
it will do well but under`100 million in its debut.
just a thought.

I don’t know. The more I talk to people about Speed Racer, the more I wonder if it will do that well. Sure, we geeks here like what we see but the world is a lot bigger than us. SR might be the loser for May.

Andy said,

I’m definitely in the minority here, but Speed Racer looks awful. The cartoon was dumb and the movie looks just as awful. I will be going to see Iron Man again, but probably some time during the week. I bet that Prince Caspian is a BETTER movie than Speed Racer. It might not make as much at the box office, but I think the movie will be better.

Nevertheless, I wouldn’t be surprised if Indy beet the stuffing out of the box office records for the opening weekend…$180mil maybe??

May 5th, 2008
Guys, the first Narnia film was HUGE? I think worldwide it made about $750 BILLION.

No way that’s “weak.”

Vic

johnny-K said,
May 5th, 2008

The first Narnia film was pointless, the kids don’t do nothing… ohh.. son of adam, -the lion comes back on his own, the ice melts on it’s own- they do no battle diffrence. If the lion returns and the ice melts, just cause they are there… than that is the weakest story ever… sc. lewis -what were you trying to do? and santa claus? what???

johnny-K said,
May 5th, 2008

But yes, the second Narnia film will do well, like 65-85 mill maybe…

-sorry for using 2 comments again.

Wow, Vic’s head is huge after the success of Iron Man. It appears to be the only bad thing to come about as a result of Iron Man being awesome.

Gary said,

vic,
i didnt say anything about the box office for the first narnia film being weak.
i used the term weak link in terms of may releases .
i was speculating about the sequel.
i should have said box office surprise or something like that .
disney has said in recent days they may stop the franchise after the third installment .
there were seven books!
they at least seem to be worried .
i own the deluxe special edition of the first film and all the narnia books .
i am a fan .
i was just attempting objective speculation.
i will choose my words more carefully in the future

Oh Shane, Vic has a sense of humor, are you kidding me with that statement?
But Vic 750 Billion that’s a bit much for Narnia. Haha
Who was it that said GTA was going to make 400 mil last week?? (I would love to see the numbers on that pile). I bet GTA hasn’t even passed the 50mil mark.

Iron Man will deffinitly have an impact on Speed Racer, however I still think SR will break in around 70 mil. Iron Man will prob pull in another 50 mil next weekend.(It will be interesting to see the drop off numbers with Iron Man). Btw Speed Racer isn’t just a car-race film and its going to have a look that’s never been seen so I wouldn’t count it out…+ the kids are going to bring in the (Alvin & the Chipmonks money). And I trully believe that Speed Racer will have a very strong second weekend against Narnia.
I’m betting it beats Narnia when the adults find out that it rocks!!

I also don’t see a battle between Iron Man and Batman.
If anything Iron Man just helped Batman out by becoming a huge blockbuster. Iron Man has set a trend that will carry on thru summer. Not to mention the movie biz allways does well in bad economic times… I predict Batman will be huge and have very similar numbers compaired to Iron Man. There both going to clean up this year.
The real question is how much will Indy 4 make. So far everyone I know, kids, women, aliens, old, young are all planning to see that one.
Tis going to be a good year for da cinema. Wee

May 5th, 2008
Shane, I hope you were joking with that crack.

And 790, yeah, I was thinking 3/4 of a billion and typed that by mistake.

Vic,
As a former writer here, I have nothing but the highest sense of respect for you and the site. It was a joke because I knew how much excitement you had for the movie. Sorry if you took offense, was just kidding my friend.

great movie, more than I expected.

But make sure you stay past the final credits, there will be a suprise on the screen.

One thing I havnt heard mentioned about Iron Man is how much of a Patriotic film it is.
They were smart to keep the name of the terrorist group obscure and not pin them down to a country.

Man that script was tight!!!
And I loved how they used cell phones in the film.
Very clever.

As luck would have it, i just finished listening to the Hugh Hewitt Show .
His final guest of the day was Michael ward author of Planet Narnia
ward theorizes that C.S. Lewis was fascinated by medieval cosmology .
Ward says Lewis based the seven chronicles on what medieval cosmologists refer to as the seven heavens the seven planets Jupiter Mars Sol Luna Venus Mercury and Saturn .
ward Said Prince Caspian represents Mars because of its military themes.
I thought some people might be intersted.
Peace and apologies if I offended anyone earlier.

Shane, we’re good. Just remember to use smileys. I always do when there’a any doubt as to the intent of a statement. :-)
Cyber, yeah, I added a postscript to my review telling people to hang around until the very, very end.

That being said, I didn’t really know much about Iron Man before I went to see the movie (I didn’t pay any attention to the ads because I didn’t want “Iron Man Overload”), This movie is AWESOME and completely kicks A**!!! I wish I was Tony Stark! I’m glad they’re tying everything up together with the whole S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers! Kudos to Favreau for an incredibly created film!
