Iron Man 3 begins hitting theaters across the world this week and opens in North America next Friday. It marks the beginning of the next chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, dubbed Phase Two, but it’s also the last film some of its stars are contractually obligated for.

Despite his occasional hints of retiring, it’s a safe bet that Robert Downey Jr. is going to return after Iron Man 3. As much as Marvel Studios would hate to recast an essential face of the franchise – the most important face of the franchise – Robert Downey Jr. would hate someone else taking over the iconic role of Tony Stark, his career-defining role. Stark is part of The Avengers script even though Downey hasn’t signed on yet, but what about Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts and Don Cheadle’s War Machine?

Since suiting up in an armored suit of his own in Iron Man 2, Don Cheadle has shown nothing but excitement and love for his part in the franchise. At Comic-Con last year, he even rallied to get fans spreading the word if they wanted to see him join the team come time for The Avengers 2. He’s not contractually obligated to, but he clearly will.

Paltrow on the other hand, has been vocal about expressing fatigue with the series. She was quoted saying she’s “too old for this s***,” and we know in Iron Man 3, she has her more important part to play yet, even joining in on the action. From our own interviews with Robert Downey Jr., and seeing similar discussions with media across the world, RDJ and his agent are in a position of incredible bargaining power. He already had the best contract of anyone in front of the cameras, earning at least $50 million for his part in The Avengers and he doesn’t want to disappoint fans.

Shane Black expressed confidence that Downey would return for Iron Man 4 & 5 and while everyone’s waiting to see just how big Iron Man 3 is at the box office before making any decisions, Paltrow may have already made hers. In chatting with GeekNation during the Iron Man 3 press day earlier this week she went on record saying:

“I don’t think there’s going to be [an Iron Man 4]. I think we’re done with Iron Man.”

It’s obviously not what fans want to hear. But it’s also not consistent to what she said to other outlets. In chatting with DigitalSpy, she said she’d be game for a (never going to happen) spinoff about Potts in the RESCUE armor. When asked about whether or not Marvel Studios had approached her about returning for The Avengers 2 or Iron Man 4 however, she said:

“They haven’t yet… They’re trying to make a deal with Robert [Downey Jr.] right now, but Robert likes me around so, you know, I’m sure I’ll pop up here or there or somewhere [smiling].”

Iron Man 3 Pepper Potts Importance Gwyneth Paltrow Offers Mixed Responses About Iron Man 4

It was Robert Downey Jr. who championed the idea of Pepper having a bigger role in Iron Man 3. She’s crucial to the Tony Stark mythos and if Downey’s going to return (he will), then Paltrow’s Pepper must as well, even if their screentime or roles are slightly reduced. Paltrow’s schedule must be built around her family first, as she told ABC in explaining that she’s aiming for one film project per year, so if her obligations for shooting and press aren’t as big as they were with Iron Man 3, expect all of the heroes to return. She also told Yahoo’s OMG that Iron Man 4 is definitely a possibility:

“Anything that’s really good that speaks to me I’ll do. It could be Iron Man 4.”

We don’t yet know what films are a part of Phase Three outside of Ant-Man and Doctor Strange but in addition to likely threequels for Captain America and Thor there will be room for Tony Stark somewhere, even in a supporting capacity doing something different. Send him into space with the Guardians of the Galaxy or put him in a executive positions with S.H.I.E.L.D. while someone else suits up for battle. Everything we hear now about uncertainty about returning is just for bargaining. For now, enjoy what’s coming in the next two years, beginning this week with Iron Man 3.

Iron Man 3 is directed by Shane Black based off of his and Drew Pearce’s screenplay, and stars Robert Downey Jr., Ben Kingsley, Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce, Stephanie Szostak, Jon Favreau, Rebecca Hall, William Sadler, James Badge Dale and the voice of Paul Bettany.

  1. She sounds rather bitter..like she wasn’t happy with her very small role in Avengers; or maybe even that she’s a supporting character and not top billing. That blurb about ‘Robert likes me around’ sounded rather petulant to me..

Add that to the line about her willing to be Iron-Pots and maybe she’s feeling a little stifled.

    • i hear you, but if you watch the interview she doesn’t come across that way.

    • You know, the gal who played the love-interest of Peter Parker in the first Spiderman flicks thought she was irreplaceable, too, but she actually wasn’t. It was Sam Raimi and Tobey McGuire that made the movies what they were, not her. Although Pepper is a little more recognizable, she still could be expendable. Look at the first Rhodey: he thought he was irreplaceable, but surprise–he isn’t there any more.
I do hope Robert Downey Jr. keeps playing Iron Man. We could still use him against the grey gargoyle, Titanium Man, the Crimson Dynamo, or a high-flying, ring-zapping Mandarin. And we need him in case villains such as Ultron, Kang, Whirlwind (the Human Top), Diablo, or the Skrulls show their faces in The Avengers movies. OK, Marvel, offer RD anything to get him to stay! He is the biggest hero-draw Marvel has, and like it or not, has become the primary driving force behind Marvel’s Superhero success where Avengers’-related hero franchises are concerned.
Having said that, I do want to see Quicksilver, Goliath (Hank Pym in his cool blue/yellow costume), Scarlet Witch, and Wasp. Maybe later on down the line Black Panther or Vision could put in an appearance (after these first four have been introduced).

  2. As much as i’d miss RDJ and Tony Stark lets leave him at a high note and not run him into the ground lets give all the new guys a chance!

  3. pssshhh…no RDJ Ironman and you might as well cancel Avengers 2. Marvel’s entire universe has been built on the success of RDJ as Ironman.

    • Replace rdj with tom cruze lol he was up for the role originally before rdj afterall. Im kidding.

  4. I like Paltrow, but I think fans don’t get that these movies are really not her style. Iron Man was the first big blockbuster movie she ever did. I don’t think she’d ever planned on doing 3 more movies in the same franchise after that. She has a family and other endeavors and has said that she only has time to do one movie a year. That being said, I doubt she’s annoyed or upset with her roles, she’s just ready to move on to the next thing versus RDJ who couldn’t be happier being the big star of the Marvel universe. My opinion, she won’t play as big of a role as she did in IM3, but I’m sure there’ll be some nods/cameos of Pepper in the future, if only as a favor to RDJ.

    • I agree with you! but I can’t see Iron Man 4 without Pepper Potts and Gwyneth! I hope she will return!

      • You could see Iron Man 4 with Pepper BUT without Gwyneth…

  5. You see this in sports too. Agents tell their clients to be play both sides “I’d like to see other opportunities” and “I’d like to stay here”. It’s about the $$$ and the less eager they seem the more money Marvel/Disney will fork over to convince them to return.

    • Exactly, that was what I have said before. It is all politics!! All about the monie$$$$. Not that I am bothered as I feel they perform the roles well and do think they are worth it

  6. If the franchise should in anyway depend upon RDJ participation, the entire Marvel enterprise, not to mention its whole universe, is facing a villainy far worse than any the comic creators could have ever conceived
    – Robert Downey Jr.

Disney is the hero, here. That’s not going to happen.

    • Disney is the hero, hmmm? I can just see the next superhero team of Mickey, Goofy, Donald, Pluto, and Horace Horsecollar (and don’t forget the ladies: Minnie, Daisy, and who was the cow…Clarabelle or something like that?)

  7. I want him to be the new Director of SHIELD or the Secretary of Defence, those are awesome roles for Tony Stark to play even if he doesn’t suit up for all action.

I just want him around for a while longer, that’s for sure.

And obviously, if we have Tony we get Pepper, unless she dies at some point.

    • A serious operation the size and scope and importance of Shield is not going to operate with a director who is wise-cracking, devil-may-care, cavalier, and snarky. I love Tony Snark, er, Stark, but he just is not cut out to run Shield.

      • He did in the comics when Fury was out of the picture. In fact, that’d be great, as I’d love to see a Marvel Civil War movie at some point. The thing is, RDJ is aging and sooner or later, he won’t be fit to play Iron Man anymore, so Marvel’s options will be: 1) recast Tony Stark but I doubt that’d play well with the audience, considering how much Downey IS Iron Man in the public’s eye; 2) reboot the franchise but the same objection can be made; or 3) give Tony one of these roles. By the way, he had a hard time making himself accepted as their leader by some people in SHIELD. That could be the premise of a great screenplay based less on action and more on intrigue.

  8. @ Rob Keyes

How can you be so sure RDJ will return to Marvel? Isn’t it still possible that he won’t?

    • Because we spoke to him. And in over a dozen interviews he’s mentioned how great a position he’s in, how happy his agents are, etc.

RDJ is to Tony Stark what Stark is to RDJ. Could you imagine EITHER letting someone else takeover? Because Stark’s going to be in the films for years to come. And RDJ isn’t going to say no to $50 million. He’s another Disney-Depp.

      • There’s also the (non-spoiler) Bond-style “Tony Stark will return” line after the post-credits scene.

Whether it’s IM4 or whether they give up on the IM franchise and have Tony appear in Avengers movies only, who knows but the latter seems the most likely option in my view.

      • @ Rob

Thanks for the information, I appreciate it. I want RDJ to resign, I’m just not sure he will. I agree with your Depp comparison.

I always took his “great position” comments to mean at the present time. In other words, his negotiating position currently, but I see your point.

I really can see both sides of this. He walks away to do other projects, or he stays because he doesn’t want anybody else in that role. I don’t think Disney would pay him another 50 million for Avengers 2. I think they’re kicking themselves over that one. I don’t think they ever imagined a backloaded deal would ever be paying him that much.

        Thanks again!

  9. I don’t mean to sound cold hearted but, screw what Gwyneth Paltrow is saying. If RDJ is can be James bonded then who is she?

    • “…screw what Gwyneth Paltrow is saying…”

I’d prefer to just screw Gwyneth, rather than whatever she’s saying.

      • +1

      • I’ve had her…she’s nothing…!

  10. personally I cant stand Gwyneth Paltrow. (best part she ever played was at the end of ‘Seven’)
If they do avengers 2 and no more Iron Man movies Ill be ok as long as this one ends it on a High note.
Although I would love to see the Skin Armor or a true hulk buster armor on screen.

    • *Bleeding edge rather than skin.. sorry rushed it.. boss was coming

      • Yeah, but RDJ loves just having her around.

    • Trust me… if this one is the last Iron Man movie, it really ends in a high note. Oh, and Gwyneth is much much likeable here, especially compared to the 2nd movie ;)

  11. Iron Man is not the only character in Marvel.
Yes this was the character that started it all,in the cinematic universe, but there are a ton of characters who deserve their own movie.
Marvel has brought non comic book fans into the Marvel universe, now expand outside these characters.
I’m sick of hearing this idea that people only like Earth-bound stories. If in every movie Earth is being attacked, it will get old. (Just like it currently is in the comics)
Take the movie to space or to another planet.
Guardians of the Galaxy is a great example of how they are starting to begin this process.

    • Umm… sounds like Thor 2 will take place off Earth for the most part.

      • A lot of Thor took place off Earth too. That movie was 50/50.

  12. They shoud just let RDJ come back as Iron Man in Avengers films and hold off on Iron Man 4 for a while so he won’t get burned out too quick. By the time Avengers 2 comes Thor and Captain America will be able to sell themselves and Marvel won’t have to rely on Iron Man as their #1 solo franchise.

    • Once you’ve seen IM3, you may (or may not, who knows) realise that even Marvel knows they can’t rely on Iron Man as their “go-to” franchise guy any more.

      • just curious how you came to believe such a statement? not by any means going against you I haven’t seen the film yet just curious

        • Then go see the movie. Or are you really begging for a spoiler?

  13. Gwyneth Paltrow gone after this one?

    No problem with me!

This isn’t Iron Pepper Potts…It’s IRON MAN!!!!

  14. Dude, he will clear 80 mil easy with his new deal. Probably 200 with the backend profits.

  15. Dude, he will clear 80 mil easy with his new deal. Probably 200 with the back end profits.

  16. Marvel can only do two movies per year. They’ve got a whole mess of new characters coming down the pipeline and each one is deserving their own movie. If Iron Man goes on hiatus for a while, except for Avenger sequels…… then so what?

I’m not going to cry if RDJ isn’t the focus for every Marvel movie and we get this:

    Iron Man 3 (2013)
    Thor 2 (2013)
    Captain America 2 (2014)
    Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
    The Avengers 2 (2015)
    Ant-Man (2015)
    Thor 3 (2016)
    Doctor Strange (2016)
    Captain America 3 (2017)
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (2017)
    Avengers 3 (2018)

    • There will probably be a antman sequel in 2017

      • Actually, I would like to see Hank Pym turn into Goliath after Ant-Man comes out, and be in the Avengers where he belongs, along with wasp. And quicksilver and scarlet witch as well.

    • I’m sorry, but I’m NOT excited at all about Ant-man. Seriously, Ant-Man? Saturnday morning cartoon material, maybe. Full lenght feature, no thanks.

      • I’m with you on this, though I’ll probably end up seeing it anyway to avoid missing any ties with the overall story. Who knows? They might just turn this ridiculous character into something good.

  17. Here we go again with ScreenRant deliberately misinterpreting Paltrow’s comments to try to create a false sh**storm among the fans. That whole thing with her saying that she was “too old for this s**t” when asked about Avengers 2? She was JOKING. Watch the video at E!Online, she was laughing as she said it:

    http://www.eonline.com/news/344519/avengers-sequel-gwyneth-paltrow-may-not-come-back

Let’s not forget that Pepper wasn’t originally going to even be in the first Avengers; so how the heck would Paltrow even know at that point whether or not she’d be in the next one? This latest comment is just more of the same thing. This sort of thing happens every time contracts are up for renewal, and she probably can’t legally say anything until a deal is hammered out. Let’s just sit back and wait until we hear from Marvel directly instead of letting media pundits yank our chains.

    • The voice of reason.

  18. Eventually ,he will leave, he is not going to be there forever .

  19. As much as I like RDJ, sooner or later, he’s going to end up moving on. That will be the end of RDJ as Iron Man, but not the end of the Iron Man franchise. There will be more Iron Man movies after that happens, sooner or later.

Hopefully the creative forces behind those will go with characters like Whitney Frost or Bethany Cabe. Pepper Potts has largely been played-out (unless you want to see her as Rescue, and from what I gather, most people don’t).

    • Or Jocasta/Madame Masque?

      • Oh, yes, and I agree…let’s not make Pepper into Rescue. Not everyone in the flick needs to be a super-powered hero/heroine.

  20. Robert is about to get some good old truck full of money…Marvel aint letting him go anywhere.

  21. “Robert Downey Jr. would hate someone else taking over the iconic role of Tony Stark, his career-defining role.”

    ^did he ever say this

    • That statement meaning: He would hate not getting millions and millions from Marvel….XD

      • Uh…no, I was wondering if he cared if someone took over as iron man or if they(marvel)are bold, tony stark

        • Yeah Cody He has said he dont want anyone else playing Tony Stark!! He has also said that they could just find another actor to do it!
BUT to your question he loves the role and Being a Co. man so Im sure for the right price he will stay on for a while…

          • Let’s hope he doesn’t get too greedy, forcing Marvel to part ways with him.

  22. It is only a matter of time before he goes, The only question is will he leave or will he get pushed when an Iron Man movie fails?

    • RDJ is not getting any younger.

    • It looks like everyone here forogt that RDJ said he would be perfectly happy playing Tony Stark and Sherlock Holmes for the rest of his career.

  23. After watching this movie, I had this HUUUGE feeling that this is indeed the conclusion to Iron Man. Everything was still open for future installments though, so let’s see what’s coming next… but I think Tony will only return in The Avengers movie(s), to let the other new team members explored (Ant-Man, Doc Strange, Black Phanter, and others)

    • Unless it is Dr. Strange guest-starring in Thor 2 or something, I would rather only see him in a solo movie, not as a member of the Avengers. I would not really mind Black panther later on in The Avengers or guest-appearing in a captain America film, but as far as Avengers members go, let’s stay true to the original early comic characters. Bring in Goliath, Wasp, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, then consider later people like BP or Vision.

  24. I like Gwyneth Paltrow. I think she’s the best actress in the MMU. If I were Kevin Feige? I’d pay her to stay…. at least in the Avenger sequels. GP’s next Marvel film after IM3 is Avengers 2 in 2015…… then Avengers 3 in 2018?

That’s not going to take up a lot of her time…… Unless they decide to put her in the Rescue suit, she’ll be Tony Stark’s significant other for a scene or two.

Maybe Tony and Pepper get hitched at the beginning of IM4? And then she gets killed by the next big antagonist in the franchise….. Driving Tony to revenge.

    BOOM!

    • Nothing against Paltrow, I like her, but that would be awesome. She’s been around enough for the audience to care about her character and killing her off would really throw in extra emotion to whatever fight Tony would have to be in for another film.

      • Thing is, he fights for revenge in IM3 so it’d be retreading familiar ground. They’d have to find a spectacular way of putting events in motion to pull it off again without giving a familiar feeling to audiences.

        • Also, though their relationships are not exactly similar, Tony Stark without Pepper would be like Peter Parker without MJ. No thanks.

  25. I wonder, after Avengers 2 and some of the lesser known hero standalones, if it would be feasible for them to do a film or films about the Civil War story arc.

  26. Maybe both Pepper Potts and Jane Foster can get killed off In Avengers 2…. :)

  27. I think it’s all just a way so if they do come back it’s for more money. In the end I think they will all be back. I do think all bets are off once Phase 2 is over.

  28. I would like Paltrow to stay but she could be replaced.

It would be very difficult to replace Robert Downie Junior.

I wonder how he would go as batman if he does move on.

  29. Boohoo, ive read tons of great iron comics and p pots isnt in most of them. U dont need pepper to make an ironman movie.
