‘Iron Man 3′ Trailer Keeps It Serious

Published 2 years ago by , Updated July 18th, 2014 at 9:56 am,

It was only three weeks ago when Robert Downey Jr. returned to the set of Iron Man 3 after an injury and while principal photography resumes, so does the marketing campaign begin. We’ve known for three weeks that October 23rd would be the day the first Iron Man 3 trailer officially releases, offering a look at footage only seen so far behind-closed-doors at Comic-Con and certain trade and press events.

As a result of of fans joining the Iron Man Facebook page, a short preview of the trailer released on Sunday, followed by another earlier today to go along with the first Iron Man 3 poster and a set of photos from the film.

The media splash this week represents the first major marketing push for Iron Man 3 – and hence, the beginning of Phase Two of the Marvel cinematic universe – since Marvel Studios held a panel presentation for the film this summer at Comic-Con. At the presentation, director Shane Black, Marvel pres Kevin Feige and cast, shared several minutes of unfinished footage from the film.

Iron Man 3 Ben Kingsley Mandarin Close up 570x242 Iron Man 3 Trailer Keeps It Serious

In that sizzle reel, we got our very first look Ben Kingsley dressed up as the Mandarin to go along with his intimidating voiceover, a scene showcasing Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark suiting up in his new Extremis (Mark 47?) armor, and a mishmash of action bits including the destruction of Stark’s seaside mansion. While “darker in tone” has been the buzzword since Shane Black and Drew Pearce became in involved with the threequel, Iron Man 3 will not be without the series’ trademark character-driven comedic moments. In the Comic-Con footage, that was highlighted by a hilarious scene featuring Stark attempting to re-hire Jon Favreau’s Happy Hogan as they reflect on the battle of New York from The Avengers.

The test trailers however – from the descriptions – focused strictly on the more intense, dramatic moments, and this trailer does exactly as described and includes the same voice over from the previous footage and the same scenes from the leaked descriptions. Watch the HD trailer on Apple.

  1. I like the iron man movies but i’ve never been all that into them but i have to say this looks DAMN good

  2. I loved the trailer! RDJ with Shane Black is a winning combo. Although Extremis is not my favorite IM story line I am going to save judgement for the final film. The trailer definatly got me exited though.

  3. Now i waitfor the inevitable TDKR/IM3 trailer mash up. Epic meets Awesome and creates something legend….. dary

  4. I’m guessing that “I’ve got a lot of apolgoes to make” line was directed at the debacle that was Iron Man 2 lol

    • LOL

  5. Mandarin=boring. Couldn’t come up with a more exciting villain?

    • He is THE Iron Man villian. You dont know your comics if you think Mandarin is boring.

  6. Wow. It can’t be any worse than IM2, and despite how great IM1 was, people forget that the 3rd act was weak.
I hope this [with it's darker tone] has the potential to top both of its predecessors.

It’ll be interesting to see how the “real world” Extremis will work, as opposed to the comic book specs. Maybe that’ll answer the questions regarding the bed scene with Potts and the scene where the suit is on top of Stark as the mansion is destroyed.

I like the dramatic music though, it’s gotten me pumped up.

Since it ties into Phase II, I wonder whether they’ll have the after credits scene [as expected] or throw in a mid movie cameo [also possible]

so many questions, so much anticipation.

    looking forward to opening night.

    • Looks like the Suit is rescuing Stark as he tries to save Potts !
How ironic if he programmed it this way :(

  7. Did anybody else catch the flash of dead Happy Hogan?

    • I watched it a few time and I could have sworn he started to move at the very last second of that clip. It could have been how the camera was moving and that made it look like he was trying to get up. But that was a good catch. I didn’t realize that it was Happy till you posted it.

    • I don’t think he’s dead though… he moved a little.
I watched the trailer frame-by-frame on my PS3 (yeah, I’m THAT big a nerd ;)) and it looks like Stark is walking towards a near-dead Happy who’s trying to warn Stark that there’s someone behind him (that someone being the the Mandarin putting his hand on Stark’s shoulder)

  8. Looks good. Downey can do serious drama.

I hope Ben Kingsley doesn’t get too hammy with his portrayal of Mandarin. I’m not a fan of Kingsley. I hated him in Hugo. I pretty much hate him in everything except Gandhi.

    • Yeah no offense 2 Kingsley, but IMO Ken watanabe would have been perfect for the role of the mandarin. Hopefully he’ll nail the part down and be a really ruthless bad a$$ villian.

    • Have you ever seen Sexy Beast?
That might change your mind about him as a villain.

    • I don’t care for Kingsley either. I can’t think of a single role that I thought he nailed. It seemed like everyone oohed and aahed when he won the role of X in Prince of Persia. His stilted acting pulled me out of every one of his scenes. :-( I really hope he becomes the part this time.

      • Not a single role? not even Ghandi?

  9. Wow the trailer is awesome, definately a change in tone I can’t wait for may 3.

  10. Wow the Mandarin does not sound like Kingsley AT ALL. I mean, if I didn’t know it was him playing the character I wouldn’t have guessed. And I’m still not sure if that’s a good thing or not – the voice sounded a bit weird to me. And I’m still on the fence about the whole Mandarin get-up at this stage.

Trailer looks promising though – if the stakes are really as high as they’re making it out to be this might actually be pretty good. They have no excuse for not topping IM2 really.

    • The Mandarin doesn’t sound like Kingsley, and I like that A LOT!

  11. Cool. The gritty & dark (knight) vibe is much needed after Avengers and IM2. Looking forward to this!

  12. I enjoyed the trailer. I know people hate this phrase because it’s used to death but I like the darker tone.
I like my Comic Book/Superhero movies to have a serious tone to them. Sure humor is fine and necessary at times but if it done wrong it can derail the whole thing…
If I have any criticism of the trailer it’s that I wish they didn’t reveal the destruction of Starks Mansion. That would have been a pleasant surprise to see on screen. The same thing happened with the trailers to The Avengers, there ended up being so much shown in the trailers that it spoiled certain moments that I wish it hadn’t.
    Less is more Marvel.
    Tease us. :)

    • Completely agree. Modern day trailers put too much bang in their trailers. Ruins the suspense when you know a certain scene is coming.

    • The destruction of Tony’s mansion was well documented before the trailer came out, months and months ago. It’s nothing new.

      • Yeah but that was leaked production set info that general movie goers would not be privy to. In terms of what is released and viewed (i.e. official trailers and photos) as just members of the audience, the Stark mansion blowing up would of had a bigger and better impact if only shown in theatres.

  13. I am not complaining, i loved the trailer. But couldn’t just stop thinking, like it wasn’t just iron man 3, its more than just an iron man movie, its Iron man Rises…
Now dont tell me that this story isnt about resurrection when everything is lost. :)

  14. I think this trailer is the best marvel trailer to date.

  15. The ONLY thing i didnt like about this was the 1st person camera angle under water. That isnt needed. Its not what iron man is about and feels weird to me. Hopefully ill be eating my words when I see this but in the trailer it feels akward

  16. The Iron Man suit over the bed, I really do think this is Tony having a nightmare, because he has essentially bonded himself telepathically to the suit itself, and he is now scared about where he ends and Iron Man begins, worrying it can now control him.

    Or something like that.

  17. Captain America tattoo on the back of the Mandarin’s neck?

    • Certainly looks like it, but the star in the middle looks like an anarchy symbol.

  18. Looks awesome. But what about the Ant Man footage? When will that come out? And I’m willing to bet that there will be a Thor trailer before the end of the year. If not it’ll be not too far into next year. But since Ant Man won’t come out till 2015, they might not release any footage anytime soon. :-(

  19. Looks like it’s going to be one of the best Marvel movies yet.

    Phase 2!!!

  20. I wonder will this go deeper into his alcoholism?

    • If the interviews at this year’s comic con is anything to go by, no.
They won’t be focusing on his alcoholism in this movie.

  21. Billionaire loses everything!
    Faux-message spouting villain!
Larger scale violence with less story!
This is definitely not The Dark Knight Rises all over again, yes sir!

  22. Kingsleys voice over chilled me a bit to be honest… Great trailer. Definitely looking forward to this one.

    • He sounds like a cowboy

      • I live in Texas and he definitely said “Turrorist” like the good ol’ boys.

        • Well, the Mandarin should be cosmopolitan enough that he isn’t constrained to his natural accent. It’s possible he could do something “playful” yet at the same time menacing with his voice, perhaps like Moriarty on Sherlock. It did remind me of the speech of “reel ‘murricans”. We’ll see.

          • I think he sounded like Reverend Lovejoy from “The Simpsons”… :D

  23. Phase 2 has started! Yay!

  24. holy s*** this looks amazing

  25. I must admit that I was very VERY skeptical about this 3rd installment after being revealed long ago that Shane Black was going to direct this film instead of Favreau. I am also glad to admit that I was wrong for having those initial thoughts. I love this trailer and from what I’ve seen from the shots and scenes so far, I have very high hopes for April 2013. =)

  26. I wish this was on something besides Quicktime because I refuse to download that program onto my computer. Every time I do, I start having all kinds of issues with it. It’s over on YouTube now, though…

    Looks pretty darn cool.

    • I watched it on dailymotion because, like you, I refuse to install Quicktime on my computer!

  27. Okay Im in the armor and Im just just fly u-
    (slips/wires wrap around neck)
    ACHUAHCHUAH kah!!…

  28. Yup, I have to say this looks pretty good. A nice contrast in mood to The Avengers and IM2. Really looking forward to Marvel Phase 2!

  29. house looked a bit too cgi for my liking, lets hope its a draft. however, can’t wait
