‘Iron Man 3′ Trailer Keeps It Serious

Published 1 year ago by , Updated July 18th, 2014 at 9:56 am,

It was only three weeks ago when Robert Downey Jr. returned to the set of Iron Man 3 after an injury and while principal photography resumes, so does the marketing campaign begin. We’ve known for three weeks that October 23rd would be the day the first Iron Man 3 trailer officially releases, offering a look at footage only seen so far behind-closed-doors at Comic-Con and certain trade and press events.

As a result of of fans joining the Iron Man Facebook page, a short preview of the trailer released on Sunday, followed by another earlier today to go along with the first Iron Man 3 poster and a set of photos from the film.

The media splash this week represents the first major marketing push for Iron Man 3 – and hence, the beginning of Phase Two of the Marvel cinematic universe – since Marvel Studios held a panel presentation for the film this summer at Comic-Con. At the presentation, director Shane Black, Marvel pres Kevin Feige and cast, shared several minutes of unfinished footage from the film.

In that sizzle reel, we got our very first look Ben Kingsley dressed up as the Mandarin to go along with his intimidating voiceover, a scene showcasing Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark suiting up in his new Extremis (Mark 47?) armor, and a mishmash of action bits including the destruction of Stark’s seaside mansion. While “darker in tone” has been the buzzword since Shane Black and Drew Pearce became in involved with the threequel, Iron Man 3 will not be without the series’ trademark character-driven comedic moments. In the Comic-Con footage, that was highlighted by a hilarious scene featuring Stark attempting to re-hire Jon Favreau’s Happy Hogan as they reflect on the battle of New York from The Avengers.

The test trailers however – from the descriptions – focused strictly on the more intense, dramatic moments, and this trailer does exactly as described and includes the same voice over from the previous footage and the same scenes from the leaked descriptions. Watch the HD trailer on Apple.

  1. Yesssss!

  2. *Starting up the slow clap*

  3. Not so much a fan of Sir Ben Kingsly’s voice for this (if that’s him narrating the teacher part), just doesn’t sound very menacing. Other than that, looks pretty good. The gauntlet flying to his hand was pretty cool looking.

    • If that’s the mandarin voice I can deal. At least he’s going somewhere different. I love all these new-fangled villain voice performances. After seeing it 3 times I just couldn’t have bane any other way as weird as it was the first time!

    • The more I watch the trailer the more I like Sir Ben’s voice. Very creepy and menacing in a subtle way.

  4. Looks awesome. And I really like how they’re acknowledging the events of the avengers as a plot point and not just glossing over it. Stark’s house blowing up looked brilliant

  5. O_o wow, it looks awesome.
i got creeped out by the iron man suit when they were in bed XD hahahaha. it was probably a stark nightmare. anyone agree?
anyway cant wait it look brilliant.

    • LOL Yeah…I would FIGURE that’s a ‘nightmare’ shot, but I don’t know…

ANYWAY, I agree with you..it looked AMAZING and I’m diggin’ the tone…honestly, this looks to be the best one yet!

Of course now I have to watch it another 100 times…LOL!!

      • Wasn’t a nightmare shot I don’t think. In the extremis storyline tony controls the suit with his mind. He was testing it looks like.

  6. Hmm. It is very serious, definitely a change up for the Stark man. I wish it showed moreeeee!

    • Tony is probably dreaming about controlling the suit (or doing something pervy to mrs pots.) . And since extremist lets him control the suit by thought, it came alive. That’s what I think. Huge chance I might b wrong

      • I think you’re absolutely right! He’s in great stress so his mind gone berserk and controlled the extremis suit but not on the on the “doing something pervy part”. That would be so silly!

        • We’ll jst have to wait and see. But their is a chance. Tony is silly n pervy

  7. Cool!!!

  8. Color me excited.

I do find The Mandarin’s voice odd though. Hopefully, th emore I hear it, the more I’ll like it.

    • PS, I know that earlier, Guy Pearce said that his role in the movie was more of a cameo, but in the trailer, it looked like he had a big presence throughout.

  9. Trailer says April 2013. U guys say May 2013. Who’s wrong?

    • In the UK it opens one week early and the YouTube vid is from the MarvelUK channel until the North American one drops.

      • Dam sucks for us in the US haha
Thanks for clearing that up :)

    • Most likely the international release. It seems it always releases first internationally, then releases last here in the US.

  10. DAMN! This looks DOPE!!!! (Please be good, Please be good, Please be good)

  11. This looks awesome. Im glad they are really getting serious about this. Its got a more serious tone and still the jokes. I think thats where they messed up the most with the last ironman move. It was to funny. He was going through a serious life crisis and it was just oneliner after oneliner

  12. After watching the trailer many times. I realized that in the end where Stark is struggling underwater he screamed “Pepper!” and we saw Pepper falling so deep in the ocean. Then the after-logo scene where Stark is alone pulling his extremis suit. Why do I have this feeling that Pepper will die.

It’s either Pepper really died or Stark failed to rescue Pepper thinking that she’s dead but the truth is the Mandarin saved Pepper in some way and used her as a final card against Iron Man.

    2013 come faster!!!!!!!!!

    • It’s possible she will have the “rescue” armor available to her by than.

  13. Damn I can’t wait. That trailer was literally such a amazing trailer. Bring kn phase 2!

  14. Looks pretty solid, I was thrown off by kingsly voice… it was like hillbilly at one point, then normal American then robotic… idk lol but it is a darker tone which I appreciate someone at marvel is attempting something new. this one I’m looking forward to.

  15. wow i have a feeling this is going to be a great superhero film one of the best wow im blown away!!! i want to watch it now!!!

  16. Some people call me a turrurist that’s just turible

    • Haha!

  17. Looks awesome. And to the guys that thinks its a nightmare scene or tony controlling the armor, I think that the mandarin has found a way to hack tony’s suits and use it against him. It would explain the few scenes where we see the suit attack them.

  18. Looks … awesome.

  19. I don’t know about you guys but I have a hunch the Hulk will make a cameo. Take a look at :50. The left foot is bigger then the right foot and the person has tethered pants. Makes you think???

    • that is exactly what i was thinking!! even if its just a cameo considering they are using the events in avengers pretty heavily

  20. That was EPIC!!!!

  21. Pretty F’in Cool…and I had to pause when War Machine was Body slamming some dude in the middle of what looked like an interogation room. Did anyone else see Hawkeye or Black Widow in the trailer…I assume Nick Fury will make an appearance also.

  22. At 29 secs…is a memorial to someone and at almost 50 secs it looks like Happy is on the ground bloody & dying….noooo if they kill off Happy & Pepper.

  23. Can’t complain to any of that. Nice to see they’re going for something a little darker, I’m a huge Iron Man fan and love RDJ, but in The Avengers, even I found his constant quips and smart comments to be a tad wearing after a while.
Hopefully it’ll still have some humour, but more in keeping with what we expect from Shane Black.

    So far, very impressed.

  24. Yea in 50 it is hulk because if you zoom or enhance the image you can see green and the one foot appears much bigger than the other, Im thinking that pepper will die in this film because they want to make the mandarin his mortal enemy. Very happy to see the mandarin is played by an actor who will give a uniqueness to the character. And for those who like spoilers, the rings the mandarin has will be part of the avengers 2 because Thanos the alien from the planet he destroyed has the infinity gauntlet and when mixed with the rings makes him unstoppable, and if marvel is following the comics then thats how the avengers will pan out.

    • The infinity gauntlet is powered by the infinity gems, all the ten rings are are components salvaged from the propulsion system of a crashed spaceship, but then again this is a new universe, I suppose it could link in

    • Just because the rings are there, doesn’t mean they will be magic.

  25. Looks pretty good like

  26. More on the line of ‘The Dark Knight’.
Now its personal and its serious. Cant wait..!!

    Phase Two is on.

    • And the award for the first person to mention The Dark Knight goes to!

      • Man I wanted that award!

  27. That’s not the Hulk, it’s Tony, one of his legs is still encased in armour.

  28. That looks awesome, and it seems to me this won’t be the last Iron Man movie. Well, of course I can live with that. Phase 2 sure looks promising to me!

  29. Very strange accent indeed. But I suppose, we’ve entered the era of weird supervillain accents, have we not. Look at the Joker with his menancing cadence and Bane with his heavilly muffled stangled tone. Ben Kingsley sounds like a cross between Agent Smith and Hal 9000 but its definitely interesting though
