‘Iron Man 3′ Trailer Keeps It Serious

Published 3 years ago by , Updated July 18th, 2014 at 9:56 am,

It was only three weeks ago when Robert Downey Jr. returned to the set of Iron Man 3 after an injury and while principal photography resumes, so does the marketing campaign begin. We’ve known for three weeks that October 23rd would be the day the first Iron Man 3 trailer officially releases, offering a look at footage only seen so far behind-closed-doors at Comic-Con and certain trade and press events.

As a result of of fans joining the Iron Man Facebook page, a short preview of the trailer released on Sunday, followed by another earlier today to go along with the first Iron Man 3 poster and a set of photos from the film.

The media splash this week represents the first major marketing push for Iron Man 3 – and hence, the beginning of Phase Two of the Marvel cinematic universe – since Marvel Studios held a panel presentation for the film this summer at Comic-Con. At the presentation, director Shane Black, Marvel pres Kevin Feige and cast, shared several minutes of unfinished footage from the film.

In that sizzle reel, we got our very first look Ben Kingsley dressed up as the Mandarin to go along with his intimidating voiceover, a scene showcasing Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark suiting up in his new Extremis (Mark 47?) armor, and a mishmash of action bits including the destruction of Stark’s seaside mansion. While “darker in tone” has been the buzzword since Shane Black and Drew Pearce became in involved with the threequel, Iron Man 3 will not be without the series’ trademark character-driven comedic moments. In the Comic-Con footage, that was highlighted by a hilarious scene featuring Stark attempting to re-hire Jon Favreau’s Happy Hogan as they reflect on the battle of New York from The Avengers.

The test trailers however – from the descriptions – focused strictly on the more intense, dramatic moments, and this trailer does exactly as described and includes the same voice over from the previous footage and the same scenes from the leaked descriptions. Watch the HD trailer on Apple.

  1. just an FYI, that’s not the capt america symbol, it’s not red and white and doesn’t have a star in the middle, it’s a religious symbol or something. it wouldn’t make sense for him to have the capt america shield inked on the back of his head would it now ?

    • You don’t know that. Maybe the dude lost a bet during his ‘lost years’. People aren’t born criminal masterminds ya know

    • No offense, but I think you’re color blind ;) That tattoo is definitely red and white rings, with blue in the middle and a white ‘A’ (anarchy) symbol.

Since I’m lazy, I’ll just copy & paste my opinion about the tattoo from a comment I wrote up on another article:
According to Kevin Feige “the Mandarin uses symbolism of various cultures and iconography that he perverts for his own end”… so his Cap shield (with an anarchy symbol instead of the star) tattoo is probably one of the things that Feige is referencing. That would also tie in perfectly with my thoughts on his accent:

The Mandarin character possibly creating a “character” when he’s giving his speech (to what I’m assuming is a large audience) – it would explain the incredibly over-the-top American accent.
I mean, how more theatrical can it get than being a middle-eastern terrorist making his big, villain speech in an American accent – there’s kinda this sick irony to it… and I’d think a character like the Mandarin would have that mindset.
So maybe that voice over is just him putting on a show and in actuality, he’ll have a different accent throughout the rest of the movie?

Obviously this is only a theory, but one thing’s for certain: that tattoo is definitely red and white with a blue center and an ‘A’ mark in the middle (any of the high-res screenshots on the web proves it), and Feige’s comment about iconography that gets twisted/perverted sure backs it up as well.

      • there is no white on the symbol at all, maybe a little red in the middle but that’s debatable. and he isn’t really speaking in an american accent, more like a weird twist on the english accent, which probably has to do with the actors background ?

  2. Still pissed about Mandarin not being Chinese or an actor of Asian descent. That was stupid and undermining all that we have ever followed with the comicss. Ben Kingsley is a horrible choice. And so based on this preview, pepper gets her ass kicked and either War Machine has gone crazy or some other character has infiltrated all of Tonys defenses, making him not that smart after all

    • I agree with the casting of Mandarin part. What were they thinking??
And as for Pepper getting attacked, isn’t that virus going on?

    • The person that infiltrated his defenses is his own suit, actually.

It’s a reference to “The Mask in the Iron Man”.

  3. Hey SR, why can’t I find this article in the ‘Latest Movie News’ list?

    • Oh, ok, because it’s under the trailers section. Nevermind.

  4. Why can’t I watch this :S

  5. I think it looks good. If that is the Mandarins voice, then it’s interesting. It sounds almost Southern U.S. only monotone. Maybe Mandarin isn’t Asian, but some charismatic public figure with a made up persona. That would somewhat avoid racial stereotypes. He say’s he considers himself a “teacher.”

  6. The trailer was so unbelievably kick-ass, although it made me very sad. I almost thought it was Tony getting dragged down by that cable, but now I think it was just the suit. So much stuff goes wrong, I think it’s going to be a long film, maybe 2:30 or more. Do all the suits rise up, or just that one? WHAT THE HELL’S GOING TO HAPPEN??!!

  8. I think III will be a huge huge huge surprise

  9. i think III will put Tony in a situation like he was in the first Iron Man film; just look at the end he is beaten up dragging his only iron man suit left ; this sequel will be fantastic because I think its amazing watching Tony use his intellegence when he has limited resources like in the first when he was in the cave

  10. Are we sure that’s not guy pearce’s voice overdubbing at the end of the trailer? It doesn’t suit Kingsley’s voice at all.

    • It’s Kingsley, Fergie confirms,

  11. Am I the only one who thinks this might have a Spiderman 3 feel to it. Just in the way that he will get the Extremis suit have all this power. But ends up coming at to high a price so by the end we see him in a “lesser” armor. Just my theory

  12. I really don’t like Kingsley’s voice as the Mandarin.

  13. Is it just me or, with the first words that he says, does the Mandarin say “Ladies, children, SHIELD”? If i’m hearing that right, it’d be interesting to see which other characters from the MCU will show up. Then again, Shane Black has said this is a standalone story

    • I believe that he is saying “Ladies, children, sheep…” As if he is trying to wake up the world from blindly following a certain way of life.

      • that actually makes more sense! and it’d be cool if that’s what he says, showing a really good sarcastic attitude he has

  14. First scene where tony fall in the snow is fight with guy pears

  15. I am a big fan of marvel. Keep them comming. Thank you

  16. I guess Mandarin controlling iron man’s suit. Hope it will be the best movie action movie this year :)

  17. I hope they RENEW his contract for at least 2-3 more films (non-Iron Man films) including:

Guardians of the Galaxy (that’s a STRETCH)
    The Avengers 2 & 3
Ant-Man (this is also a STRETCH)

  18. I’m very confused as to why NO ONE has mentioned his contract ending after IM3…

no one cares that RDJ MIGHT be replaced in TA2?

  19. Can’t wait to it comes out looks epic.

  20. All this is great! But when the hak are you coming out with the movie: “Black Panther”?

  21. Amazing! I think is the best trailer of Iron Man 3 movie.

  22. I am not exactly an Iron Man comics expert, but perhaps the suit was actually trying to defend Tony when the assault on his mansion began? The suit seems to be empty, so… what if it was protecting Potts?
