Superman Man of Steel Iron Man 3 Spoilers Lego Rumor Patrol: LEGO Sets Reveal Potential Man of Steel & Iron Man 3 Spoilers

Compared to Iron Man 3 and Marvel’s “Phase Two” movie lineup, the Superman reboot Man of Steel has had a pretty easy trip through the rumor mill. What few rumors we’ve heard haven’t been all that juicy, the most fantastical being talk of a possible Wonder Woman cameo in the film – which really isn’t all that wild at all, considering the speculative consensus among fans that Man of Steel will be the launchpad of a Justice League movie universe for DC Comics/Warner Bros.

Today, however, there is a new Man of Steel rumor that is rather outlandish, involving the possible revelation of a “secret villain” who could appear in the film alongside Boardwalk Empire star Michael Shannon, who will play rogue Kryptonian, General Zod. The same source also has information that hints at certain big moments in Iron Man 3, including the “big baddie” showdown.

Screen Crush picked a few details out of a Brickset rundown of upcoming LEGO movie tie-in sets. Toy merchandise has been spoiling superhero movie secrets for a while now (see: the Amazing Spider-Man toy set), so this comes with little shock or awe; as often as toy sets reveal things that filmmakers and studios have yet to show onscreen, tie-in toy lines just as often diverge from their film inspirations, offering set pieces, characters, costumes, etc. that the film itself does not. Such is the case here, with this LEGO set description list below (via Brickset):

76000 Arctic Batman vs. Mr.Freeze – Aquaman on Ice
76001 Batman vs. Bane – Chase with Tumbler
76002 Superman Metropolis Showdown
76003 Superman Battle of Smallville
76004 Spider-Man – Hunting with Spider-Cycle
76005 Spider-Man – Mission at Daily Bugle
76006 Iron Man Extremis 76008 Iron Man vs Mandarin
76009 Superman Black Zero Escape.

New Man of Steel Villain?

Superman Rouges Villains Rumor Patrol: LEGO Sets Reveal Potential Man of Steel & Iron Man 3 Spoilers

Before we get any further into it, let me just say up front: the rumored “secret villain” is not Lex Luthor. It’s not Darkseid. It’s not Doomsday, Metallo, Parasite, Lobo, Mongul, Bizzaro or any one of the dozen or Superman rogues you may initially imagine (or see pictured above). In fact, it’s doubtful that many outside the circle of hardcore comic book fans have even heard of him:

Does “Black Zero” ring a bell?

The name refers to series of characters and/or organizations that have appeared in Superman comics, including:

  • A space saboteur responsible for the destruction of Krypton.
  • A terrorist organization that fought in the millennium-long “War of Clone Rights” on Krypton.
  • A Kryptonian military force commanded by Ursa (a.k.a. Faora, who will in fact appear in MoS).
  • An intelligent computer virus hiding in Superman’s Fortress of Solitude technology.
  • A version of Superboy from an alternate timeline where Superman never returned from the dead after his battle with Doomsday.

Internet logic dictates that the LEGO line would never utilize such an obscure character/organization unless it was directly tied to the film. While we certainly agree with that logic, we can’t really support the claim being made on other sites that Man of Steel will feature the villain version of Black Zero.

Sure, we know Man of Steel will delve into the backstory of Krypton; the events that led to its destruction, and sent young Kal-El and Krypton military commander General Zod on their destined courses for collision on Earth. While it’s possible that Black Zero (the character) could be remolded into some kind Krypton saboteur (sans the “psycho-molecule” superpowers), it really isn’t the more likely scenario.

Superman Man of Steel Black Zero Ursa Faora Rumor Patrol: LEGO Sets Reveal Potential Man of Steel & Iron Man 3 Spoilers

The more likely scenario is that Black Zero will be the Kryptonian military unit run by General Zod and his lieutenant (lover?) Faora, the latter of which will be played by actress Antje Traue (Pandorum). This seems all the more likely considering that modern comic book iterations of Zod  - including those written by DC Entertainment executive Geoff Johns, whose work is being mined for this film - have presented the character as a fascist military commander who tangled with Superman’s dad, Jor-El (Russell Crowe, who will be given ample screen time in the movie). Finally, Man of Steel set photos have hinted at Shannon sporting a black uniform as a Zod costume, and while that’s a flimsy hinge to hang speculation on, if it quacks like a duck…

All in all: don’t be surprised if this LEGO set describes a sequence of Superman taking on Zod and his forces – which will still be a pretty sweet action sequence under the direction of Zack Snyder. But we’re not holding our breath for some Marvel-style big villain reveal to happen.

Iron Man 3 Plot Details

Iron Man 3 Concept Art Rumor Patrol: LEGO Sets Reveal Potential Man of Steel & Iron Man 3 Spoilers

This one is really simple by comparison: According to LEGOS we’ll be seeing elements of the Extremis armor and storyline from the comics – which we already know for certain, having seen the actual Extremis armor on display at Comic-Con, detailed in recent concept art (alongside War Machine/Iron Patriot), and generally in the Iron Man 3 Comic-Con footage and trailer description. So we wouldn’t call this info a revelation, exactly.

The only sliver of juicy news implied by the LEGO set is that we’ll get an actual “big boss” battle between Tony Stark/Iron Man and The Mandarin, the nefarious mastermind (and longtime nemesis of Iron Man in the comics) who will be played by Ben Kingsley. If true, it then begs the question of just how Stark and The Mandarin will have their epic showdown; seeing the Mandarin don some advanced suit of armor would be too reminiscent of the boss battles in Iron Man 1&2, and we doubt Marvel Studios will ‘keep it to comics’ by having Mandarin whip out his signature ten mystical rings to go all Voldemort on Tony (it’s possible, just not likely).

Iron Man 3 Mandarin Boss Battle Rumor Patrol: LEGO Sets Reveal Potential Man of Steel & Iron Man 3 Spoilers

Will we see Iron Man throwdown with The Mandarin?

If I had to personally guess, I would count no the Extremis biotech being used to turn the villain into a physical match for the upgraded Iron Man, while still allowing him to stick relatively close to his standard physical form. Of course, if Mandarin sits back and lets some Extremis-enhanced thugs or (stick with me here,) a big robot version of Fin Fang Foom do his fighting for him… Well, I wouldn’t be mad about that, either.

Iron Man 3 will be in theaters on May 3, 2013.

Man of Steel will follow on June 14, 2013.

  1. These Lego spoilers happen all the time. It’s a wonder they haven’t been mentioned on here in the past…

  2. It’s a typo of “Black Zone”. He’s going to go into the Black Zone at some time in the film and will have to escape it.

    • i think your trying to say phantom zone XD

      • Nope, I’ve read descriptions of concept art on another site that said Black Zone too.

        • i just looked on other sites and well they have F**ked up then… why would they name the prison black zone when the phantom zone is pretty much known by everyone that has watched any series of superman and read the comics.
Not to mention phantom zone sounds better and im not just saying that because thats what its called in all the incarnations of superman, its just better.
Black Zone is meant to be the Phantom Zone… why…

          • Doesn’t bother me, they should realize what it is anyway if that is indeed what they’re calling it.

        • Black Zone sounds racist… I’m just sayin.

  3. I think that Marvel and Shane Black have learned their lesson are not going to have Iron Man battle an armored version of himself in 3. I doubt that Mandarin will be the physical threat. He’ll probably be the stand-in-the-back mastermind who directs various thugs and minions to fight Iron Man.

    • That’s what I was thinking. Mandarin will use the MCU version of the Ten Rings to attack Iron Man. But Kofi’s idea of a mechanical Fing Fang Foom would be a great addition.

      • Some cell phones will be more than they appear.

  4. Looks wise, I vote for Megan Fox as Wonderwoman. I just wanted to throw my two cents in.

    • …yeah…if only she could act.

      • …and she can’t act.

        • …and doesn’t play well with others.

          • Upvote, wait what site am I on?

  5. Licensed LEGO = super-overpriced LEGO :(

  6. Would’nt a robotic Fin Fang Foom be a little too much like the Chitauri Leviathans in the Avengers?

    • nah. it would have limbs and wings and stuff.

      • I was thinking maybe using Chitauri tech

        • Maybe Thanos loans him an extra special Chitauri leviathan :P

    • The Leviathans were alive though, not robotic.

  7. Wait a minute, could they trying to mirror that battle sequence from Superman: Birthright with kryptonian troops under Zod’s command freed from the Black Zone? Omg that would be awesome.

    • That would be sweet. It would be even sweeter if at the end we get a picture of Luthor pulling the strings the behind the invasion like in Birthright. Just because I feel there needs to be a small nod to Superman’s arch-villain.

  8. Fin Fang Foom armor. calling it now

  9. Interesting parallel between Thanos’ power gem encrusted Infinity Gauntlet and Mandarin’s gem powered rings.

I would be tempted to tie them together somehow…… perhaps created by the same alien race?

That wouldn’t follow the Marvel comic origins for these weapons, but the concepts are so similar. Different colored gems giving different powers to the wearer.

Granted the powers given to Thanos by the gems on the gauntlet are a power of magnitude greater than Mandarin’s rings. I just checked and they don’t line up exactly. Plus Mandarin has 10 rings…… Thanos gets half that number.

Since Iron Man 3 and Avengers 2 are coming out not that far apart, I would (if I was in charge) link the two antagonist’s weaponry. Marvel hasn’t followed the source material by the numbers anyway.

    Why not?

    • I like that. Perhaps Mandarin could have just a small fragment if each gem…

    • I was thinking along the same lines. I wonder if they can tech up the magical a bit and tie in the power of the rings to the extremis tech in some way. It’d serve as a nice bridge between the magical/advanced science aspect of the shared films and the more grounded techy world Iron Man inhabits.

  10. Posers? Really?

  11. HA! That was the very first thing that I noticed. I don’t follow comics all too much anymore but I SWORE that it was FIN Fang Foom.

  12. I think that is the one pic of the new Iron Man armor, whether photo or artwork, that I actually like so far.

    • Agreed! I was thinking the exact same thing!

    • That is the best pic I’ve seen so far. It looks gold instead of the beige we’ve been seeing.

      • I always preferred his mid-80′s red and silver armor myself. I never understood why they always stuck him with colors that looked like they were picked from a McDonald’s condiment tray for most of his career.

      • Someone mentioned post production enhancement to it so MAYBE the “gold” sections will get some shine or gleam, I dunno.

  13. YES!!! YES !!!! FIN FANG FOOM!!!!

  14. Fin Fang Foom is one of my favorite Marvel characters. I hope he is in this.

I would love to see Lockjaw make an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy too.

  15. I think the “escape” in “black zero escape” is interesting – I read Zach is changing the name of the phantom zone to black zone.

Could lego of mis-typed zero for zone??

could supes pay a visit to the black zone in the film??

    anyone think the same?

  16. they actually can use the ten rings in Iron Man 3, since the avengers came out. The Avengers introduced us to mystical, or alien technology. Then again, I not familiar with Mandarins back story, and the origin of the Ten rings.
