‘Iron Man 3′ Super Bowl Teaser and Poster: Hard Times for Tony Stark

Published 2 years ago by

Director Shane Black’s Iron Man 3 maintaining the momentum of Joss Whedon’s The Avengers is a manageable, but nonetheless difficult task. That involves both balancing commitments to the greater Marvel Movie Universe – including (maybe) setting up Guardians of the Galaxy, the sole Phase II non-sequel – and crafting an installment both entertaining and emotionally-satisfying (in addition to being somewhat politically-relevant, with a villain like Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin).

Marvel is using Super Bowl XLVII to keep on raising expectations and launch new footage from the Iron Man threequel. A teaser for said IM3 Super Bowl commercial has popped up online, in addition to another poster not-so-subtly hinting at tough times ahead for Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.).

Here is a telling excerpt from the official Iron Man 3 synopsis:

When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

The Super Bowl teaser contains familiar footage of Stark’s Manor being decimated by The Mandarin’s forces, but also features previously-unseen (if brief) glimpses at James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) in his new Iron Patriot-inspired War Machine armor and Guy Pearce as Adrich Killian, whose importance to the IM3 proceedings may either be minimal or secretly-pivotal. Once again, it’s apparent that difficult times lie ahead for our hero, even though the overall film apparently won’t be as serious and dark as the trailers suggest (or unrelentingly bleak as the posters – see below).

  1. There is another woman in the house when it gets hit.

    • I was noticing that too, looks like the Maya character? I guess she’s around before the mansion gets blown up.

      • He is cheating on pepper

    • That´s probably the chick who invented the Extremis virus.

  2. The look on RDJ’s face makes the poster look like a spoof of superhero movies and not only that, but his body doesn’t even look like it belongs in that image

  3. I’m not really fan of this poster, or any of the Iron Man 3 posters released so far. I agree this photo just looks a little out of place. I like the idea of showing a defeated Tony Stark, but this doesn’t really show the effect of the seriousness of the third movie.

    • Im still deciding on my changed name now that this fellow above me has the same one… hmph even tho i was first

      • No problem my friend, I added a number so we can get along just fine!

  4. Not really interested in a teaser for a teaser, but that poster is… interesting.

I think they had a good idea (“showing a defeated Tony Stark” to quote Trey), but IMO the execution is all wrong. RDJ’s face and the stiff position of the suit (among other things) could have been done better. It looks as if they tried to do a minimalist style for the background, but then they have this incredibly complex and detailed thing right there in the middle – IMO that just doesn’t work.

Also, to me it looks more like a video game poster/cover, and less like a movie poster.

    -Rant over- 😉

    • It almost looks like Iron Man got shot off of a moving train while fighting someone and he’s going to dive into deep water as fate carries his body back to his past…

This is the end…hold you breath and count to ten… 😉 lol

      • *your

    • Man of Steel posters are better!

      • Not really… IMO 😐

‘The Wolverine’ has some pretty epic posters. And the new Star Trek one isn’t too bad either.

  5. The posters okay, the teasers okay, hope they have a BRAND NEW longer trailer in superbowl, not the one out already.

  6. I’m getting tired of these trailers for the trailer especially since the trailer is only gonna be 30 seconds.

The poster is cool. His face seems off from te rest of it well more misplaced. And the background seems misplaced too but I always enjoy a battle damaged super hero.

Are we gonna a Thor 2 trailer Sunday? Does anyone know? I want a poster and trailer. Thor 2 is my most anticipated marvel film this year.

    • Hehe and of the 30 seconds theres the intro screens and the closing title/release date screen so you actually get what.. 20-25 seconds at most of movie clips.. Of those you might get a glimpse of a new scene not previously shown. Meh.

  7. This sounds like The Dark Knight. Tony’s mettle is tested, he obviously get’s his butt whipped and he has to survive on his own with his wit’s and stuff. Bruce becomes the batman again, get’s his butt whipped and as to help himself mentally and emotionally to make the jump and back to Gotham … just saying it still looks great.

    • Ha! I was wondering how long it would take before someone compares this to TDK.

    • To be fair, this isn’t unusual in Super hero movies to have this type of scenario sooner or later. It happened to Thor right away with him losing his powers and learning some humility. The original Spiderman trilogy did it in 2.

The Dark Knight Rises wasn’t the first to have done this and Iron Man 3 will not be the last.

      • I agree.

      • Its been happening in stories since ancient Greece, heroes journey and all that jazz.

        • Well, the developers have already compared it the TDK trilogy by saying it is similar, but still (relatively) light-hearted in comparison.

      • Wasn’t it the same general storyline in the first Iron Man also? Tony is on top of the world, gets trashed in a far away place, uses his wits and determination in order to return, discovers one of his top executives is behind the whole thing, needs the help of woman sidekick to escape certain doom…and that was back way before TDKR!

    • Would you really watch a movie about a superhero with no weaknesses? Every hero has his kryptonite.

    • See Marvel is copying DC! LOL!

  8. hmmmmm, why do I have a feeling this new suits getting trashed midway trough. So I wonder what the new suit will be? I have afeeling there will be another one, perhaps silver centurion styled? perhaps retro? perhaps modular armor? guess we will have to wait and see, however I bet that firepower will destroy the new suit that we see above, then we get a new one

    • the new suit will be the white Deep Space suit that’s been rumored. The end credit scene will prob have Bruce Banner or Cap cameo and then the mid credit sequence is supposedly Stark putting on the deep space armor and blasting off into space to meet up with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

since he’s leaving Earth…i don’t see Pepper surviving through this one…

      • Assuming that the Guardians of the Galaxy has already been formed.

  9. I can wait for this one this looks fantastic, poster is pretty cool to although his facial expression looks a bit amusing when it’s supposed to be serious

  10. I just want guardians already! I’m dying for it!

  11. Alright! Rhodey is Iron Patriot.

  12. Well, I like the poster. It captures the seriousness of Iron Man 3. This film is supposed to be dramatic and different compared to the first two movies. Its a pretty cool looking image.

  13. I think the Superbowl trailer will be of 1 min rather than 30 sec just like the avengers and the another trailer in early march.I hope they do that as a 30 sec trailer will be too small to show anything significant

  14. I’m not particularly keen on the Star-Spangled Peace Machine… I hope that design is only in use for a small part of the film, War machine’s design should stick with the metallic grey of the second film / comics.

  15. Sandy, “Manor” shouldn’t have been capitalized, as it’s not a formal name in your use of it (“Stark Manor” as the formal use, or “Stark’s manor”, which is probably what you were reaching for). I realize that language skills take practice and dedication, but errors in the basics just make a journalist look.. well, more high school than pro.
