Unofficial ‘Iron Man 3′ Armor Guide [Spoilers]

A Closer Look At The Iron Legion

Iron Man 3 Armor Guide ListA rumor from months ago hinted that Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) may not only gain the ability to interface with technology around him - including individual pieces of armor for his latest and greatest suit - but he'd be able to control entirely separate suits with his mind, thus leading him to create a small army of Iron Men, so to speak. The Iron Man 3 prelude comic confirmed the idea, dubbing his reinforcements the "Iron Legion," which can be seen in the latest Iron Man 3 poster to the left.A leaked list of armor descriptions on 4chan (from toys and some people who claim to have seen the film) lines up with many of the rumors, toy images and concept art that have leaked in recent weeks, so we've put together an unofficial Screen Rant guide to Iron Man 3's armor designs. Many of these armors can be seen in the second official Iron Man 3 trailer, releasing today.

Stealth Armor

Iron Man 3 Mark XI Armor Stealth MARK XI - STEALTH ARMOR v.01
  • A derivation of the MARK VI armor, TONY STARK configured it to have built-in stealth capabilities, which allow him to infiltrate the TEN RINGS' hideouts unnoticed.
  • Slightly modified Mk.VI, with a dark blue color palette. Red eyes and Arc Reactor.

Layered Plating Armor

Iron Man 3 Mark XXII Layered Plating ArmorMARK XXII - LAYERED PLATING ARMOR v.01
  • Experimenting with various forms of armor formation, TONY STARK designs this armor with the concept of retractable layers. This technology allows this armor to fold into a more compact form, making it more portable than the MARK V armor.
  • Classic/Spandex Armor, v.01 has the horned face, v.02 has the rounded face with a different color palette
(The image is clipped from the poster but we are unable to confirm at this time if it's depicting the Mark XI.)

SKIN Armor

  • Attempting to create a new form of malleable liquid metal that could be configured into other shapes, TONY STARK creates the S.K.I.N. ARMOR. Unfortunately, the alloy compound proved to be unstable, resulting in TONY STARK putting the project on hold.
  • Looks like the comic SKIN Armor, but slimmer and more segmented. Huge shoulder armor.

Aquatic Armor

  • Designed with the sole purpose of undersea exploration in mind, TONY STARK builds the SPECIALISED AQUATIC ARMOR. Able to withstand greater pressures than his standard armors, IRON MAN travels deep into the sea to recover rubble from MANDARIN's attack.
  • Hydro Armor. Resembles the comic Hydro Armor, but sans the glass fishbowl helmet.
Image is from Iron Man movie concept art by Phil Saunders (2007).

Asgardian Destroyer Armor

Iron Man 3 Mark XL Armor Asgardian DestroyerMARK XL - ASGARDIAN DESTROYER ARMOR
  • Taking into account that Earth might face future threats from the ASGARDIANS, TONY STARK set about designing an armor to take down any invading ASGARDIANS. Using the DESTROYER's blueprints stolen from S.H.I.E.L.D',s HELICARRIER (in The Avengers), STARK creates the ASGARDIAN DESTROYER ARMOR.
  • A mecha version of the Destroyer seen in Thor. Incomplete prototype.
Main image appears to be from a custom toy design and top left image is cut from the official Iron Man 3 poster.

Brute Armor

Iron Man 3 Mark XXXVI Armor Brute HulkbusterMARK XXXVI - HEAVY DUTY BRUTE ARMOR v.02
  • Designed for heavy duty tasks that his standard armors cannot handle, TONY STARK creates the HEAVY DUTY BRUTE ARMOR with sheer strength in mind. Equipped with state of the art hydraulic systems powered by a modified ARC REACTOR.
  • A.K.A the Hulkbuster Armor. Not explicitly termed as the Hulkbuster though, since that's not the intended purpose. It's prototype is the Mk. XXII / v.01, and is smaller and more humanoid.
  • This armor enables IRON MAN to take on the strongest enemies.
The Brute can be seen in the final scene of the new Iron Man 3 trailer and is clearly inspired by Stark's meeting with Bruce Banner in The Avengers.

Particle Radiation Cannon

  • Unable to deal with FIREPOWER's fiery attacks, TONY STARK designs the PARTICLE RADIATION CANNON to absorb and channel TAGGERT's heat against him
  • A huge cannon that attaches to the Mk.XLII's chest. Based on Bleeding Edge's cannon.
Image is from the comics but we don't know what the cannon attachment looks like in the film. From the Iron Man 3 Assemblers toys, it does appear to be a large shoulder mounted weapon.

  • A custom-modified variant of the MARK XLII, created by STARK to facilitate PEPPER's rescue from A.I.M after their experiment.
  • Feminine version of the Mk.XLII. Has firefighting functions.
From the LEGO toys (pictured top right) it appears that Pepper's armor suit may be similar to the Mark XLVII armor we've seen in all the marketing to date.A shout out to the fan at Comic-Con who asked Shane Black and Jon Favreau if we'd ever see Gwyneth Paltrow suit up in the RESCUE armor.

  • Mourning his dear friend HAPPY HOGAN's death, TONY STARK creates this armor in the image of his deceased friend. Equipped with its own A.I. programmed after HAPPY's neuro patterns, H.A.P.P.γ assists IRON MAN in his battles.
  • Looks like a hybrid of the comic Telepresence Armor, and the Mk.VII. Gets thrashed by Coldblood.
The Telepresence Armor can be seen bottom left and the bottom right depicts the Mark VII from The Avengers.

Iron Man 3 Mark XLVII Armor CouchMARK XLII The new armor first unveiled at Comic-Con 2012 features more gold than red, and is the first set of armor we see Tony Stark able to control with his mind. It's one of the first, if not the first, example of Stark taking advantage of the Extremis technology.

Heart Breaker Armor

Iron Man 3 Mark XLVIII Armor Heart BreakerMARK XLVIII - HEART BREAKER v.01x
  • Created using various parts and components from his damaged IRON ARMY suits, TONY STARK assembles a unique armor with high offensive capability.
  • Armed with a larger ARC REACTOR with higher energy output, IRON MAN is ready to take on his most dangerous foe: THE MANDARIN.

Deep Space Armor

Iron Man 3 Mark XL Armor SpaceMARK XLVIIIs - SPACE ARMOR v.01
  • After experiencing the CHITAURI attack in THE AVENGERS, TONY STARK has been working on a suit capable of space travel. Crafted using a unique new metal alloy that absorbs his ARC REACTOR energy signature, IRON MAN travels into the far reaches of space to find the source of a coded SOS he receives.
  • White/black/gold armor, which has the concept art leaked recently (as seen on the left)

Heart Breaker V2 - Ultimate Iron Man

Iron Man 3 Mark XLIX Ultimate ArmorMARK XLIX - HEART BREAKER v.02
  • Having his armor badly damaged in his battle with the MANDARIN, TONY STARK modifies and upgrades his HEART BREAKER ARMOR into its second version. Equipped with more ARC REACTORS to increase its output and offensive capability, this is the ULTIMATE IRON MAN.
  • More cohesive version of the Heart Breaker armor. Color palette based off the initial Ultimate Iron Man armor.
Image above is the Ultimate Iron Man design from the Ultimate Marvel Comics universe.

Iron Man 3 Mark L Extremis ArmorMARK L - EXTREMIS ARMOR
  • Perfecting the EXTREMIS technology at long last, TONY STARK is finally one with the IRON MAN ARMOR.
  • The true Extremis Armor. Hybrid of the comics' Bleeding Edge and Extremis Armors.
The next-generation version of the Mark XLVII we've seen so far?

Old School

  • After DR.HANSEN disabled all the EXTREMIS technology, TONY STARK is left unable to tap on his newer EXTREMIS-based suits for battle. Having no other options, STARK dons the REVISITED ARMOR to finish his fight with THE MANDARIN.
  • More techy, solid-looking version of the movie Mk.I. Based off the comics' first armor.
We suspect this design may be based on the Iron Man 3 toy with the larger body and extended arms with claws. It appears very mechanical, and old school, similar to the Mark I but with the red and gold coloring.

Iron Patriot

Iron Man 3 Iron Patriot ArmorWAR MACHINE V2 - IRON PATRIOTIn an effort to allow Rhodey (Don Cheadle) to stand out among the Iron Legion and inspired by the return of Captain America during the Battle of New York, the government-approved War Machine armor is redesigned as the Iron Patriot, featuring a should cannon and improved systems over the original Hammer-augmented War Machine from Iron Man 2.

Iron Man 3 Godkiller ArmorGODKILLERRumor has it Tony Stark may find his way into space to meet the Guardians of the Galaxy by the end of the film, perhaps after the credits. If he does, expect the Godkiller armor to show up - his new armor from the Marvel NOW! Guardians of the Galaxy comic book series relaunch, where Iron Man is a member of the "Cosmic Avengers" team. The image depicts the Godkiller design from the comics alongside what may be a the live-action variant from the film, as clipped from the latest poster. Note the helmet colors and chest pattern similarities.

  1. Man, this movie looks awful compared to the next superman and the upcoming Xmen movie.

    • Really??? And what have you seen from the upcoming Xmen movie that gives you this impression?

    • @josh0909

You’re nuts, this movie looks and sounds fantastic. This could be the best IM yet, possible the best Marvel movie yet, outside of the Avengers anyway. This movie can’t get here fast enough!

    • Are you kidding? It’s going to be the best one yet! Besides, we both know DC and Fox have absolutely no idea what they are doing!

      • +1

      • True Story Bro.

      • spiderman 2 is, if not the best comic book movie. fox may not hit the mark every time but to me X2, SM 1 & 1, first class are all fantastic movies. now when it comes to DC all they can do right is batman and superman movies. return was an exception though but im sure man of steel will be amazing.

    • This guy must be trolling, the movie looks great.

      • +1

    • Everyone please do not feed this troll

    • ROBERT DOWNEY JR. ACTING. ‘nough said.

    • And then Iron Man asked to Superman: “Does mother you wear her drapes?”

And to the X-men:”Is Professor Xavier still bald?”

  2. Rob nice job you really broke that down well, the leaked Trailer really got me excited for Iron Man 3 it basically did what the Fast 6 Superbowl Ad for that movie for me atleast.

They are really looking to pull out all the stops for this one but do you think they are leaving any room for anything in the next movie they are powering Tony up so much it’s pretty crazy(it being the last Iron Man movie in his contract), I wonder if they will somehow get rid of the Extremis after this but either way it should be exciting.

    • My opinion on this is that you have a minimum of 3 years between Iron Man 3 and a possible Iron Man 4. So there is time to get a good story going or there is always the Demon in the Bottle (personally wish they don’t do this). There are tons of stories out there though. Extremis wasn’t one that was on my radar to begin with.

      • Yeap, and that also gives more time for RDJ to pursue other projects which I hear is something he really wants in between his Marvel appearances.

        • Hey Rob, can you post more of the Suit information as a lot more information has emerged about the suits.

Also, once the film is release, can you please lay out a full armor guide for us loyal, loyal Iron Man fans?

I think it’d be an amazing treat, if you can get your hands on all 42 armor details.

          That’d be wicked!

    • They will probably let him keep Extremis but all his suits may get destroyed to prevent him from using them in Avengers 2.

  3. I want to see him in the godkiller suit in guardians of the galaxy! That suit looks awesome!

  4. I’m sorry but DC is trying WAY to hard to pump out a JLA movie. This “Phase Two” marvel movie is going to be even better then “Phase One”. IM3 is going to be the best yet especially if he makes his way to the Guardians.

  5. I asked in a previous IM3 discussion what they would do with his ability to control the legion in the next IM or Avengers movie. It would seem silly to just see IM fighting in the future when he has the ability to call upon all his other armors for a battle. My opinion is (unless it is resolved in IM3) that the villain in Avengers 2 will somehow strip Tony of his etremis (def possible if Thanos). That would be a good story arc for Tony in the next film: depowered and forced to get back to his roots as an armor designer.

  6. Just watched the Trailer, and…. THEY HAD THE SILVER CENTURION ARMOR!

    • Say shouldnt you either update this with the armors we did see, or make a new article with the Armors we saw in the trailer? just a thought

  7. This reminds me of the reports on mystery Tumblers in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ before that came out. Other possible similarities to that movie are getting suggested by articles on this site.

I hope the story in IM3 doesn’t lose priority to a bunch of shiney bang-bang. People tend to notice when that happens.

  8. Rob, about the “Happy Armor”… The pic on the bottom right is the suit from Avengers. What does it have to do with the Happy Armor?

    • Hey dude,

Ah, we don’t know what the armor looks like outside of it being a “hybrid” of the Mark 7 & Telepresence, so I tossed in mini-images of each.

      • I thought the Mark VII was introduced in avengers, not IM 2

  9. The deep space suit kinda confirms the GOTG connection.

  10. Soooo. Happy dies?

  11. this “guide” is sooo messed up. right off the bat #1 not the Stealth Armor. #2 is the Heatbreaker Armor. #9 you this say “the Mark VII from Iron Man 2″ The MK VII is from THE AVENGERS movie! #10 is NOT the MK XLVII (47) it is the MK XLII (42. #11 is actually #2. #12 is the suit he will wear to meat up with the Guardians of the Galaxy not the “Godkiller”.

    • Actually, if you had read the comics, you’d see the similarities between #12 and the Godkiller, and you’d also know that that is the armour he wears when working with the GotG as they generally fight god-like people (heck, Thanos is going to be the villain in the film so that’s god enough for me)

  12. great…now all stark needs is an anti magneto armor

    • I heard he snatched up the Galactus armor since they didn’t bother using it in the FF movie :P

  13. Once you get confirmed suit models and # let me know.

  14. I could swear I spotted the Hypervelocity armor in the lineup too. The extendable arms were a dead giveaway.

  15. how many times has dc re-done super and bats ? dc has alot of catching up to do . marvel gets it right the 1st time , then , improves on what they’ve done . but , i will be watching all hero movies . #fan4life

  16. Everyone has come up with how TS cannot have the Iron Legion in avengers and have brought up some really great points. however, I believe we are all missing out on a potential Super Villian here ULTRON. That would be a nice set up with the ties of antman coming up. Personally I dont think we should have Thanos so early in the avengers game. I would of like of had Ultron then Thanos.

  17. I think I’m just as excited about Iron Man III as I was about The Avengers !!! Looks they really pulled out all the stops with this one with all of the armor variations, The Extremis Nano- Technology and even getting Pepper involved.

But the thing I am most intrigued by is how they end this one after the credits. The rumor is that it finds Stark traveling into outer space 2 link up with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Some have said that in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie they encounter Thanos or some of his forces and get defeated or chased back 2 earth which leads in2 AVENGERS II. Whatever the case may be Marvel is on2 something and DC is seriously lagging behind smh. Oh well … their loss lol.

  18. you’re in reality a good webmaster. The site loading velocity is incredible. It kind of feels that you’re doing any unique trick.
    Also, The contents are

masterwork. you have performed a great

    activity in this matter!

  19. Thanks for another wonderful

article. The place else may anybody get that kind of information

in such an ideal approach of writing? I have a presentation next

week, and I’m on the search for such info.

  20. Hi a few corrections and spoilers: 1. happy doesn’t die, 2. Rescue armour in lego set is actually mark 42 used on pepper. 3. Guardians of the galaxy thing doesn’t happen. 4. There is no mandarin fight (therefore all armors related to the mandarin fight dont appear). 5. TONY DOESN’T GET EXTREMIS.

  21. SPOILERS* don’t read if you don’t want to know.

Saw the movie last night. No Extremis, Happy lives, no space travel to any guardians of anything, and the Mandarin is a clown.

  22. aka IGOR ^^

  23. too bad they ruined it with thier use of the mandrin……about as good as if they had used Bozo instead of Ledger for the Joker

  24. hey iron man 3 is completely FANTASTIC! i am going to see it on friday, i got reviews from

  25. sorry i pressed the wrong button i was going to say i got reviews and spoilers from some friends and they said it was the best marvel movie ever

  26. You got so many armors completely wrong. The layered plating is just the Heartbreaker, the Asgardian Destroyer is the Bones armor, and Brute armor is Igor.

  27. I realize that you may have no idea of the orgin of any of the armors in the movie. Your comparison of the “Godkiller” to the armor in the picture is completely incorrect, the armor is actually the mark XXIV “Tank” Heavy-Combat. Your “Asgardian Destroyer” comparison is actually the mark XLI “Bones” Skeleton Suit. The “Brute” Armor is actually the mark XXXVIII “Igor” Heavy-Lifting Suit. “Extremis”, “Res-Q”, “H.A.P.P.Y.”, all do not take place in the movie. The farthest Stark has made it to date in the cinemas is the Mark 42 which is controlled with his mind, NOT with Extremis, but with a state-of-the-art chip Stark implants into his left arm.

  28. I saw the movie and it was incredible but the mandarin has a bad twist…
