When is Iron Man 3 Coming?

iron man 3 release date When is Iron Man 3 Coming?

With Iron Man 2 shaping up to kickstart the summer of 2010 as our most anticipated film of the year, Thor deep into production and The First Avenger: Captain America finally casting its hero in Chris Evans, what comes next?

We know The Avengers is the big plan for these heroes; To all meet-up in the most epic superhero film ever. But that’s not scheduled to hit theaters until 2012. Since Robert Downey Jr.’s second go as Tony Stark is already finishing up post-production, they’ve got a very long time before he’s needed on set to film a leading role in The Avengers. That leaves a lot of time to shoot the trilogy closing installment, Iron Man 3.

With Captain America shooting in June and working through this summer to hit a release date next summer, after Thor kicks off the season, we can expect our heroes to come together to shoot The Avengers sometime next year. Since Robert Downey Jr. has no current Marvel roles to shoot until then (he has Sherlock Holmes 2 to do though), he could be free and clear this fall to shoot another Iron Man movie with director Jon Favreau as they bask in the success of Iron Man 2.

Ed Douglas at Coming Soon picked up on an interesting tidbit of info from the Associated Press on an article about Downey’s upcoming comedy Due Date, co-starring Zach Galifianakis. In it, they mention what work they’re getting to next; For Galifianakis, it’s The Hangover 2 and for Robert Downey Jr., it’s reportedly Iron Man 3 this fall.

We know it’s coming, we just didn’t know the timing. If it does happen to shoot later this year, we can assume that Marvel’s plans of having two flicks per year will come to fruition and that 2012 will see The Avengers sharing the summer with Iron Man 3. It’s not surprising considering the two years between Iron Man 1 & 2.

I do wonder how much those two films will cross-over and when in the timeline Iron Man 3 will take place. We know both Iron Man and Iron Man 2 take place before The Incredible Hulk and Thor, but will the third installment be based before The Avengers if it comes out after that movie? That seems odd if it’s the case but if it’s the other way around, we can expect a bunch of major cameos. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Iron Man 3 take the big team-up movie’s place at the beginning of the summer in May and The Avengers open later that summer instead. At this point, it’s all just fun speculation.

Are we going to see Tony Stark take on the Mandarin in the third installment? Time will tell. Hint: Maybe he’ll be a villain set up in Iron Man 2?

  1. Rob,

    you are funny.

I think we will see a set up for Mandarin for the third film. Or we it could even be set up to feature Mandarin in The Avengers as a villain or a set up from the Avengers to Iron Man 3.

  2. it'd be cool if we got to see the Mandarin take fruition Post credits IRon man 2. after the Crimson Dynamo Battle. if only hawkeye had a cameo. or maybe a scene with a certain scientist working W/insects, flash of a name tag With (Dr. Henry “Hank” Pym) on it.
a fandboy can dream cant he.

  3. I would love to see a scene which is filmed first person and we don't know who we are watching. He takes someone out with a bow and arrow like a sniper and then they show Hawkeye appear out of nowhere. Would be very cool.

  4. I just dont see Iron Man 3 being ready as early as 2012. RDJ will probably have Sherlock Holmes 3 to do at some point in between as well. I'd say summer 2013 is more likely, no need to rush, we have plenty coming out 2011 and The Avengers in 2012, having Iron Man out in the same year would detract from Avengers.

  5. for me iron 2 is already enough…

  6. I have to agree. having Iron Man in 2 movies in the same year would be a little odd. However, if they wanted to have Heroes for Hire, Dr. Strange, Black Panther, or Runaways in 2012 Id be fine with that.

  7. I don't think it'll be that odd. Considering they want two movies a year and that The Avengers will include everyone, someone will be in two movies that year. They will definitely shoot another Marvel flick either late this year or sometime next year for a 2012 release.

  8. Favs is directing Cowboys and Aliens next–unless Marvel offers him a lot of money to do Iron Man 3. Assuming that happens, I doubt they'd start production until spring or summer 2011 for a 2012 release.

My best guess is they'll do IM 3 in 2012 for a 2013 release. Maybe Favs will come back then… ?

  9. 2014 no doubt

  10. We should have 3 to 5 marvel movies per year.

Dr. Sam – superman returns is on tonight at 8 eastern on AMC.

  11. While I would love to have that many Marvel movies out each year, that is no way to guarantee they will be good. I'll take quality over quantity any time.

And cheers but I'm in UK so can't watch, although the BBC seem to show SR every few weeks over here anyway.

  12. I think it depends on what other movies marvel wants to make. If they scripts for other movies they will jump start those franchises first, if not then we will see Ironman sooner. Also, now that Disney hasn a LOT of control, Disney will want to make money and they will want IM3 out as soon as possible, so in other words … who knows. My prediction is if IM3 does great (foregone conclusion IMO) then Disney will try to give us another IM by 2012-13 at the LATEST.

  13. I meant “If IM2 does great”

  14. I agree here. Quality over quantity is the best option!! But, these guys are in it to make money (studio's) so we as the fan's have little to say in what and how it happens (or how fast).. they'll just make the film the way they want, and try to hit it right.

Wouldn't it be COOL if they polled people, interviewed real comic readers, writers, storyboard artists, artists, etc, etc.. to get the feel what what people are looking for and make a film based on the industry “viewers” requests?

Who would have thought!! That's the way I would have done it :)

  15. Well, I think making IM3 for the summer of 2012 before The Avengers comes out would be great. I mean, what a lead into the “Fab 4″ getting together. Heck, you might even enlist CAP to make a small appearance in the film. CAP, Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and why not a little more on SHIELD and Nick Fury? Bring back Edward Norton and Bruce Banner, please for The Avengers !! I know he's interested !!! He actually did a great job with that reboot. I wasn't a fan at all of the previous one.

Heck, SHIELD could introduce the flying fortress in IM3, and allow/even catch cameo' first sightings of various villains they have in custody above the ship.. that would be really cool. And it would allow for those to seriously entice any other Marvel film being done which would get us all pumped up for possible ventures with any character.

Wow -too many thoughts now!! LOL

  16. I'm not sure about there being another Iron Man sequel running the same year as The Avengers. I'd halfway expect them to either make a sequel to Thor or Cap to run that same year, or introduce another character like Ant-Man by Edgar Wright. That's if they want to stick to the 2 movies a year, which they haven't done lately (I know they're doing a lot of setting up for that at the moment, but still).

As I figure it, though, if I were them I'd first want to make sure I'd achieve the overlapping storylines and character arcs well enough for The Avengers first, and then worry about what else to do with other members of the team.

  17. The grand final battle between Mandarin and Iron Man. We might even see Fin Fang Foom, Titanium Man and/ or Crimson Dynamo, and maybe even Madame Masque.

  18. I like that idea of the cameos of villians. I think that they should do that and maybe they can keep having two movies a year, and sooner or later that will lead up to a civil war movie. You guys know its coming. It has to!

  19. I agree Rob, I don't think that it'll be odd at all and I know we all love RDJ but unfortunately, i don't think he will be Iron Man past Iron Man 3 and The Avengers so I believe they would try to get it done as fast as possible while still being epic before RDJ retires his armor. With that said i think that they would want to make The Avengers even more climatic by putting it after Iron Man 3, which would be Iron Man's personal story apex and finally lead into the ultimate apex with The Avengers. It would be actually sort of weird for The Avengers to come out first, then Iron Man 3, it makes totall sense for them to sort of end IM's personal story, then move on to the Avengers which is the biggest piece of the puzzle.

  21. Remember “The Leader” is still a potential villain for “TIH” or a sub-villain for “The Avengers”.

  22. Sam

I agree as well – quality over quantity. So let's go with 2 marvel movies per year.

You don't get AMC in the UK? That's a real shame.

Speaking of the discovery channel – have you seen Planet Earth? There's a new series that just started that is amazing. It's called Life. No Sigourney Weaver narrating but I'll deal with it. Check it out.

  23. I meant BBC not discovery but we get different names over here sometimes.

  24. I just can't wait to see this movie!

  25. I hope there's more Robot Fire Extinguisher but deep down I really hope Stark gets a pet parrot with it's own little helmet that does nothing but insult him.

  26. Haha Merc. Is that for IM2 or The Avengers? That's a few too many villains.

  27. There isn't enough time to have a Thor, Cap or Iron Man 3 movie before the Avengers. They would all have to be rushed and that would mean we probably get crappy movies, which we don't want.

  28. I think they shud focus on gettin all the characters exposed like Dr. Strange, Ant-Man, Black Panther, and DeadPool and by the way whats the deal with Blade He is a Marvel Character shouldnt he at least have a cameo in another Marvel movie dat would be awesome!

  29. Im thinking IM3 and/ or Avengers. Iron Man's rogue gallery is limited but it has villains that need to be seen. (Whiplash I did not see coming at all)
