Robert Downey Jr Iron Man 3 Legion Iron Man 3 Poster Reveals Tonys New Powers & The Iron Legion [Updated]

As Marvel ramps up its big promotional campaign for Iron Man 3, we’re beginning to see more and more details of Tony Stark’s latest adventure leak to the Internet.

The Iron Man 3 teaser trailer and Super Bowl trailer framed a story in which Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is busy dealing with the ramifications of The Avengers when he is ambushed on his very doorstep by the forces of the maniacal Mandarin (Ben Kingsley). We’re left with an image of Tony, bruised and battered, trying to make his way through a dark, frozen terrain with armor in tow.

In the weeks since that initial bleak picture was painted, we’ve learned more and more unconfirmed details of the film’s plot – which means at this point you should be aware that POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR IRON MAN 3 FOLLOW!!!

Iron Man 3 Promo Art MACH XLVII Extremis Armor 570x337 Iron Man 3 Poster Reveals Tonys New Powers & The Iron Legion [Updated]

Since the beginning, it has been assumed that director Shane Black and co-writer Drew Pearce would be drawing from the “Extremis” storylines featured in mid-to-late 2000s Iron Man comics, in which Tony Stark is transformed by a weaponized nano-tech virus into a sort of living computer, able to mentally control (and later manifest) his armor. At one point the Mandarin attempted to unleash this high-fatality-rate virus on an unsuspecting world populace, only to be thwarted by Iron Man.

Characters derived from the comics – like Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) and Maya Hansen (Rebecca Hall) – are definite clues that “Extremis” DNA exists in Iron Man 3, but the film (being a Marvel blockbuster and all) needed some bigger pieces to work with – and for some time now word has been that the big finish would involve Tony using his new Extremis abilities and Mark 47 armor to control his own army of Iron Man suits – now dubbed “The Iron Legion.”

Well, this new Iron Man 3 poster – snapped at an unknown location and posted to I Heart Cupcakes – reveals that the Iron Legion is indeed real, and that the big showdown between Tony and the Mandarin is definitely more than just idle speculation. Check out a snapshot of the poster:

Iron Man 3 Poster Iron Legion Iron Man Armors 570x844 Iron Man 3 Poster Reveals Tonys New Powers & The Iron Legion [Updated]

-

There’s a long list of Iron Man armors we want to see in these Marvel movies, and if the jump from the Mark 7 armor in Avengers to the Mark 47 armor we’ll see in IM3 is any indication, we’ll probably see quite a few of our favorites (and some other iconic designs) included in this “Iron Legion.” (By the way, if you haven’t seen it already, check out concept art for the Hulkbuster and Deep-Space armors we may see in the film.)

We know this unofficial version of the one-sheet above is hard to dissect – but any guesses which armors are featured in the poster? And how do you like the look of Tony’s “Extremis effect?”

  1. Oh my… THAT poster!! Where can I get one to hang on my bedroom?!
Make me suspect that this will indeed be Iron Man last solo movie though *sigh*

  2. This looks incredible. Due the fact that IM2 was looked on less favourably by critics and more importantly to marvel, the fans too, I think they have really worked hard to get this right, from what has been seen so far, and as they have said this is a tony stark film.

On a different note as it is being brought up in this feed too, I really like RDJ’s work, but it seems a bit bizarre that he is now saying that he wouldn’t mind someone else playing stark when he previously didn’t. I’m hoping that like a sports star does when their contract expires they say a bit of stuff to the media about maybe leaving their club which puts more pressure on the club to keep the player their. I think he’s in this role for the long haul and due to the fact that he was one of the major factors in phase 1 being so successful having appeared in 4 films and being an absolute fan favourite, he has every right to try and get some more pay (within reason) as at the end of the day it is his job and who wouldn’t want a pay rise.

Don’t hate if you don’t think RDJ wouldn’t do this but I’m hoping this is maybe what is happening as he really is Tony Stark/Iron Man. I can see new Bonds/Batmen/Supermen/pretty much most characters but not Stark. Or maybe he is just screwing with us and has no intention of leaving.

  3. I also believe that RDJ should stay, Nicolas Cage should play Rocket Raccon instead.

    • That would be a hell of a crazy Racoon!

  4. RDJ IS Tony Stark and should not be replaced or rebooted or anything! IF anything he should go OFF into space and just disappear not to be heard of again I WOULD TAKE THAT ANYDAY OVER ANYONE ELSE PLAYING Tony Stark!!

The poster is Great BTW Rob!

  5. Why the distress? you can have both. Keep RDJ as IronMan and put some make up on Nic Cage, he could play Iron Man’s evil twin in IM4.

    • You had my curiosity, now you have my attention.

  6. RDJ said in the article that he is not too picky about the money (within reason im sure) HE DID JUDT GET $50Million for the avengers so I dont think he NEEDS the money!
I just hope he was telling the truth and that he does not care too much about the money and returns whe they ask!

  7. You guys listen to me, I still think a Time-slip being a possibility. something happens to our tony(originaly mind control), then the avengers do a time-slip through which they go through time and space to an alternate time line to grab an alternate teenage/young adult version of tony that became iron man at that time, and bring him back to our timeline to battle our currently evil tony, then for a while takes his place, though he originaly got returned to his normal timeline you never know in this universe ;)

  8. In my honest opinion, it’s not RDJ that is Tony Stark, it’s actually the other way around. That’s how much he owns the role and identifies with it (At least to me). Anyone else playing the role of Tony Stark would be just as wrong as trying to find someone else to play Mr. Bean or the guy on ”Pink Panther”. Oh, wait…

  9. That’s a bad-ass poster…

  10. OVER ANALYZING SOMETHING USUALLY LEAVES ONE BLIND TO THE BIGGER PICTURE……………AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO SEE’s HOW PERFECTLY AND COHESIVE IT WOULD BE THAT “ULTIMO” MAKES AN APPEARANCE IN THIS FILM (if you don’t know do some research)
THINK ABOUT IT SOME OF ULTIMOS KEY TIES WITH THIS MOVIE
FOR ONE THE FORTHCOMING OF THE IRON LEGION WHICH WERE ORGINALLY ASSEMBLED TO TAKE IT AND OR “HIM” DOWN,
TWO AN ALIEN RACE CREATED HIM AS THE ULTIMATE OOMS DAY DEVICE,
THREE HE’S CONTROLLED BY THE MANDRIN WHEN HE DISCOVERS THE DEVICE IN THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA (wait isn’t part of the film set in china …….DUHH!!! )
AND WOULDN’T THAT ALL TIE IN SO PERFECTLY SEEING HOW IRON MAN THREE GOES STRAIGHT INTO GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY !!!
Ps. Feed back would be helpful

  11. If you zoom into the upper right corner the is the “Deep Space Suit”! Ahh cool

    • I was just about to say that !! Lol and I think on top of that one looks like its made fit for a female. Maybe pepperpotts ??

  12. I only have one concern: what are they going to do with extremis after IM3. If Tony is controlling a army of iron men in this movie, would he do that in Avengers 2? In my mind, that makes him a little too overpowered. With any problem, he could just throw all the suits he has at the time at it. Its kind of a hard concept to work into a follow-up team movie. It reminds me of the questions about why the avengers don’t call each other in their individual movies for help. If you have the ability/friends, why not make use of them.

Two solutions I can think of. Number one, Tony’s suits are all destroyed in the fight. Problem: depending on the time lapse between IM3 and Avengers 2, Tony will have been able to build at least a few more suits (he jumped from 7 to 47 between Avengers and IM3). Number 2, he loses his extremis at the end of the movie. Maybe controlling so many suits burns him out. Problem: thats a lot of plot/changes to fit in a movie. Any other thoughts?

  13. i want to see More Hulk, hulk buster armor ironman,Ultron,The Leader,Giantman,Wasp,She-Hulk,Warbird,and Enchantress

  14. HUH? Cruise as Stark? Are you insane? Tom Cruise should never ever have a part in any Marvel Universe movie. Never.

And Nicholas Cage? What drugs are you smoking?

    Wow. Never.

Cruise and Cage might be good in roles they have had in the past, but there is no way the quality (or lack thereof) of thier acting could fit into the MU.

Given that some of those who play the current characters might not be enjoyable by all, but IMHO I think that every character in the MU has been perfectly cast. Even Nick Fury. And that is saying something considering the crap that SLJ was doing just before Ironman.

No Cruise, No Cage. Not even any Fassbender. I honestly dont see anyone else playing Stark. Ever. I dont mind if they replace the character of Tony Stark with someone else, but never, ever, replace RDJ. That would ruin it all.

    • I think you are being to hard on them, they have the attitude. Maybe with some makeup people and some camera tricks (Cruise) they could pull it off.

  15. The only other person that “owns” a role like Downey does as Tony Stark is Jackman for Wolverine. No one else can play their characters as well.

    • Maybe Scott Adkins for Wolverine..? Come on! it could be hard but no role is impossible to recast.

  16. I don’t know if Cage is right for Tony… I would really prefer him as Dr Strange

  17. Spoilers…..

Inthe top right hand corner, 2nd to highest Iron suit flying is the deep space armor. This bassically confirms as rumored that he leaves earth in the end credits and meets the guardians of the galaxy.

    • Not necessarily. Personally, I suspect it is more likely that Thor will meet the Guardians either during his Post-Credits, or in the film proper…

    • Not really, it just means he has a space armor. He’s got like four in the comics. They’re good for destroying enemy tracking, communication, relay, etc. satellites. Something a modern terrorist group like the Ten Rings would probably use. Thus giving the space armor an actual practical use.

  18. Trying to image Nathan Fillion as Tony. He could look pretty well on that poster, bad-ass Nathan.

  19. Unfamiliar with the Extremis line, I would have assumed that what we’re seeing in the poster is what has been trumped in the trailers so far: that Tony’s humanity and vulnerability are exposed and that the image in the poster is the suit partially destroyed…

But if the army of iron men is part of the same line where Tony and the suit become one, then, yeah I guess that’s where this is going. Cool!

  20. If you look closely, the middle armour of the three on the right looks a little like the Deep Space suit concept art that came out recently…
