Iron Man 3 War Machine Iron Patriot Air Force Iron Man 3 Poster, New Photos & Additional Story Details [Updated]

Just as fans enjoy the end of “Phase One” of the Marvel cinematic universe with The Avengers releasing on home video last month, the marketing campaign is kicking up for Phase Two. Yesterday, the first few seconds of official Iron Man 3 footage released to tease tomorrow’s unveiling of the full-length Iron Man 3 trailer. And today, a series of new stills from the film help fill in the gap.

There are six new [Update: 7 + a poster] shots in total, including the first officially released image of War Machine’s new Iron Patriot-themed armor design, built by the air force.

Two of the stills come from the official Australia/New Zealand Facebook page for The Avengers and the other four come exclusively from USA Today. As we can see from the stills and from yesterday’s trailer preview, Pepper Potts is playing a very important role in the Stark-centric solo affair.

From the brief sneak peek Iron Man 3 footage released yesterday, and from what we saw from the minutes of early footage during Marvel Studios’ Comic-Con presentation, we can see which scenes some of the images come from. The classic Iron Man pose being struck by Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) in the Mark 47 armor, for example, is from the scene where Stark first puts on the Extremis-inspired armor, calling to his body one piece of the armor at at  a time and then flipping down into this pose.

“Now we see he’s invented a technology that allows him to basically have the suit arrive to him anywhere at any time, piece by piece. And it doesn’t always work at first.”

The shot of Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) holding an older Iron Man helmet is from a scene after Mandarin attacks Stark’s mansion with helicopters and – from the early trailer descriptions – may be shown in the full trailer tomorrow.

[Update #3: Watch the full Iron Man 3 trailer.]

Adding to the official Iron Man 3 synopsis released last week, Marvel President of Production Kevin Feige explains to USA Today that the threequel takes place a few months after the events of The Avengers where The Mandarin attacks.

“He basically loses all of his toys and is forced to just use his mind to rebuild and to face his biggest enemy… He’s ultimately the engineering superhero. He’s so charming and so flamboyant that sometimes you forget that’s what he is: ‘Hey, kids, learn this stuff and you can maybe build an Iron Man suit.’ ”

“The goal with Iron Man 3 is to again prove that all of our single heroes are as interesting alone as they are when they’re all together in an Avengers movie.”

“In this movie, we are again going to see him stripped down more than we’ve ever seen him since he was in that cave, again with his back against the wall and with nothing but his wits to help him survive.”

Excited to meet the Mandarin?

Iron Man 3 is directed by Shane Black based off of his and Drew Pearce’s screenplay, and stars Robert Downey Jr., Ben Kingsley, Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce, Jon Favreau, Rebecca Hall, William Sadler, James Badge Dale and the voice of Paul Bettany.

Iron Man 3 releases May 3, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015 and Ant-Man on November 6, 2015.

  1. epic poster. cant wait for tomorrow.

few things to be excited about tomorrow. This trailer, Celtic vs Barcelona and play station all stars battle royale. gonna be an exciting day.

    • as Ray said I didnt know that some people are able to make $7575 in one month on the internet. did you look at this link http:\\bit.ly\X24LHP

  2. “In this movie, we are again going to see him stripped down more than we’ve ever seen him since he was in that cave, again with his back against the wall and with nothing but his wits to help him survive.

Sounds like Dark Knight Rises :S

    • sounds like iron man 1…

      • sounds awesome!

        • Sounds like iron man 1 + Dark Knight Rises! Super awesome! :D

        • +1

    • Yeah sounds like Iron Man 1. Dark Knight just copied Iron Man

      • Are you insane The Dark Knight and Iron Man have nothing in common and they were released in the same year so it was impossible for the Dark Knight to copy Iron Man, do some research before you jump to such a bold conclusion.

        • Woah..Woah..Calm down champ. He was just kidding. No one is questioning the Dark Knight. We all liked it. It was a great and totally original movie. He was just continuing the joke from above saying the similarity between them was kinda odd.

    • Sounds like……EXCELSIOR!!!

      • Every time I read that I hear stan lee’s cheesy voice LOL.

        • I hear the voice of Al Gore from South Park. Beware of Manbearpig!

  3. I wonder if mandarin will be mystical or will he have a combo of tech and magic like this suit he has in armored adventures.

    • I say both, Tony has seen some pretty strange things at this point, he knows there are greater mysteries, uh… thor… The mandarin’s command of both tech and magic is what makes him such a great foe.

    • ITEM 47… MARK 47… ITEM 47, MARK 47… ITEM… 47… MARK…47 Is there a connection here?

      • Probably not but hey, you never know….

      • I like it all.

  4. War Machine looks awesome! Iron Man Mark 47 looks awesome! Mandarin looks awesome! Iron Man 3 is definetely going to outclass Iron Man 2! Maybe even Iron Man 1! Hopefully there will even be a few teases to Ant Man!

    • Well, the rumor was that Ant-Man would show up with Radioactive Man in the post-credits scene, but that’s just one rumor and there are others that they’ve done rewrites on Iron Man 3 as well, but who knows.

To me it’d be smart to introduce him, but that was before they announced a November 2015 release date which is so far away. Then again, could Ant-Man show up in Cap 2 and The Avengers 2? That’d be even smarter ;)

      • I would think Ant Man would be in Avengers 2 because what better way to introduce a lesser known character like Ant Man than to put him in with the big guns like the Avengers.

        • That’s what I’ve been thinking/hoping too.
Avengers 2 will obviously get a lot of viewers and could help “sell” Ant-Man to the skeptics and general audience.

Plus, Tony Stark, Bruce Banner and Hank Pym in a room together “speaking English” NEEDS to happen!

          • I fiftheenth that notion, and would LOVE to see Ant-Man introduced in TA2, BUT the only problem with that, is introducing him in The Avengers 2, and then giving him an “original” story arc for his own film? They might be introducing him in The Avengers 3. But, I may be wrong.

            • Drop in and save the day in ‘Avengers 2′ now that would make even the doubters happy..

  5. So far so good. Mini-trailer was cool, posters and photos look cool. I’m excited!!! I can’t wait to see the full trailer tomorrow. It looks as if Marvel may have out done itself this time.
    Very cool!

  6. I just hope the world do not end in december :$

    • Hahaha…yeah, that would stink.

  7. I am super excited for the trailer tomorrow. The poster is awesome, I really like this just boots and gloves stripped-down basic version of the extremis armour. It’s like he can put on just that in case of emergency and fly/shoot and then when he has time he can call up the rest of the armour. It’s pretty neat.

Mandarin looks great too and I like War Machine’s new paint-job as well.

  8. From the look of that pic, it would seem we saw the back of Mandarin’s head as he loaded a gun in the teaser trailer.

    • It would seem you’re right.
Although, why is Mandarin using a ‘lil pistol? – Where’s the rings?! Or at least give him a rocket launcher! ;)

  9. Look at that big beard on the Mandarin!

  10. What is the thing on Tony’s head in one of the pics? It looks like a mind reading device from another movie.

    • My guess would be a tele-presence headset. Read the rumors and you can probably figure out what it could be used for. A little “spoilerish” if I explain it…

    • That’s his hair. *Budum chssshh*

  11. Photos look awesome I love the look of it! The poster is epic. I can’t wait!

  12. The poster looks amazing (IMO this is the best movie poster since TDKR’s Bane & Broken mask poster) and to my surprise, War Machine and Iron Man 47 looks awesome too (much better than the concept art, set photos and comic con pics). The color schemes definitely look better (although it’s still not as good as the original silver/grey WM and red/gold IM).

Gotta say though, I’m not liking the pic of Kingsley’s Mandarin… something seems off. I guess I was expecting him to look older? I dunno.

Anyway, I’m stoked for the trailer!

    • kingsley’s a good actor. some might say great. but, im not feeling it with him playing Mandarin. hes supposed to be Oriental in appearance..and obvioulsy Kingsley isnt. :)

      • Kingsley is a great actor and IMO he should make a great Mandarin (performance wise), but I’m not liking the look.

I just showed the picture to my little sister and in her words “he looks like a gnome” ;) – I’d have said dwarf but yeah… IMO he looks like a character that belongs in LotR or the Hobbit.

Hopefully the trailer will have a shot of the full costume – that might look better than the close-up.

        • Could it be because he doesn’t LOOK like the Mandarin? I’m not seeing the iconic green skin, fu-manchu facial hair or the composed look. Maybe this is him before he gets the rings?

And your sister is correct! He DOES look like a freakin’ Gnome. :P

          • Green skin? – I think we’ve been reading different IM comics…

            • He had green skin in the 90s cartoon, maybe that’s what he meant.

            • Scapegoat is correct. Sorry but I’m not the biggest Iron Man reader and that animated series version is the picture I have ingrained in my mind.

Regardless, he looks nothing like any of the incarnations I have seen which is a bit disappointing because of how close they have tried to be with IM himself (well, up until this 49rs outfit)

          • mandarin has not the dr.fu-man-chu look from the classics comics,if you mean that. how weird would that look ? i find it good that his hair looks grittier, and not a bit shaped up,but he has got long hair and the iconic suit. but, people will never get pleased.

            • Looks mongolian, not oriental thats for sure.

              • Though I think this shot of him makes his beard look bushier than it is on closer inspection, probably not that bad.

    • that little zit or whatever it is on Ben Kingsley kills his look, well for this character, for me. Thoughts?

  13. looks gooooood ! mandarin looks dark and gritty,i like it.

  14. the best comic-movie poster ever ! the other movie-sites haven´t got the poster +1 for screenrant. :)

  15. I am still not crazy about Extremis but I am eagerly looking forward to this at the same time. I am hoping we will see Rhody in a better light (than IM2) and I am really anxious to see Kingsly as the Mandarin.

    • what means anxious ? can you describe me please ? :)

      • dictionary.com, or even wikipedia.com

        • i see it no big help here if you ask something friendly. but if i write a sarcastic comment everybodys freaking out. and many people have enough from this community, you are mobbing new readers away.

          • Jeffro is right man. I mean your already on a computer or smart phone. C’om on Man.

                • @scapegoat – Yes, but there are ways around that. He’s been blocked before.

  16. you can see it on the 5th pic, that they´ve destroyed his mark 4 suit in his suits-gallery.

  17. Mandarin looks better then I thought he would.

  18. The new suits are swag

    • Who needs swag when you’re TONY STARK!

    • swag was created in the 60′s by a group.of gay men. meaning secretly we are gay. your welcome for your history lesson. haha.

      • As interesting as your history lesson might be, people tend not to care about what something might of meant 50+ years ago. Its lost its historical significance. Swag has been reapropriated if u will to describe anything thats cool by more recent generations.

      • From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

        Swag may refer to:

Swag (album), a 2002 album by former Guns N’ Roses guitarist, Gilby Clarke
        Swag (bedroll), an Australian bedroll
        Swag (motif), an architectural element
Swag (novel), a 1976 crime novel
Swag (TV series), a United Kingdom reality television series
“Swag” (Ugly Betty episode), the eleventh episode of the television series Ugly Betty
Swag, a type of window valance, often in combination with a full curtain underneath
Swag, slang originating in the early 1800s[1] for stolen goods or booty; possibly carried by a swagman
Swag, promotional items given away at trade fairs and events
The Swag, a magazine published quarterly for Catholic priests and deacons of Australia

        SWAG may refer to:

SWAG, Sourceware Archive Group, a free collection of classified source code and sample programs written in Pascal.
SWAG, music of the musical group Bonde da Stronda
SWAG, Special Warfare Group, an elite unit of the Naval Special Warfare Group of the Philippine Navy
Scientific Wild-Ass Guess, slang for a rough estimate based on expert experience.

the promotional items was the only definition i could think of without looking it up

  19. Is it May yet?

    • No.

      • Now?

        • Don’t make the mods turn this website around!

  21. Completely off topic here but does anybody know when the next podcast will be posted? It is usually up about a couple of hours ago.

  22. The primary reason why I’ll be watching movie? Because of Don Cheadle as War Machine.

Ben Kingsley looks ridiculous as Mandarin. He’s a good actor, no doubt, but he looks to be seriously miscast here. Mandarin looks more like a dwarf.

Once again, Hollywood sticks to its silly, close-minded casting formula, and the movie’s going to suffer as a result.

Once I heard the villain was the Mandarin, I knew they’d screw up both the casting and the look.

The Wolverine movie did much better with the casting and look for its Asian villain, Silver Samurai.

  23. I was actually expecting something more… menacing?… similar to Sir Kingsley’s character in Prince of Persia… but yeah, I must admit the Mandarin doesn’t look too much of a threat in this shot. I do however get a creepy ancient vibe from him. I think somehow Marvel is going with the philosopher route with him, and Sir Kingsley will definitely nail it perfectly.

Gawd, now I want to see the trailer and hear he speaks… XD

  24. please cut down on the romance bs that was in IM2 and thor, it would be good if we moved beyond the cliché’/generic super hero movie and had a proper narrative that people could relate to properly.

mandarin looks horrible, case in point being that you dont get a non-asian actor to play an asian character, it’s just logical no ?

    • But, Ben Kingsley is Asian….

      • WUT.^

        • He’s half-Indian.

  25. When exactly will we see this trailer? I keep reading tomorrow but I read this article yesterday.

  26. Nevermind, Google provided a clear release date.

  27. I thought the Mandarin was going to look better. Were are his rings anyway!
I do have to say he does look like a character from the LOTR or Hobitt haha. I’m hopping to see that part when Tony saves people in the air looked cool on the teaser. I also think the Mandarin is going to take Pepper as a hostage or something like that, it could work well if Marvel does it well. I just hope she won’t die she is the best of the women of the films (i’m not counting women superheroes ,I mean as love interests for superheroes, like Jane for Thor or Peggy for Captain.)

  28. Awesome stuff… the poster looks great

  29. Ha! Ben Kingsley looks like a dwarf who got rejected from Lord of the Rings! Very excited for Iron Man 3, though. Hopefully he’s a better villain than Mickey Rourke in IM 2.
