Iron Man 3 Mark VIII Armor Marvel Reveals Official Iron Man 3 Synopsis

With The Avengers successfully completing the first chapter, dubbed “Phase One,” of Marvel Studios’ cinematic universe, Phase Two begins next summer with Iron Man 3. Last week the studio released the official synopsis for Thor: The Dark World, which also releases next year, and Disney is sharing the lowdown on Iron Man 3.

Before Iron Man 3 began production and before The Avengers hit theaters, rumored plot details pointed towards the threequel being based on Warren Ellis’ Extremis miniseries from Marvel Comics, a story which raised the question of whether it’s the man who makes the suit, or the suit who makes the man.

That is exactly the theme to be explored in Shane Black and Drew Pearce’s screenplay, as evidenced by the official Iron Man 3 synopsis. Stark’s journey will build off of important character-defining moments from Iron Man 2 and The Avengers (recall: Captain America asking Tony what he was without his suit):

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3″ pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, “Iron Man 3″ is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce and Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968.

“Iron Man 3″ is presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures and DMG Entertainment. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing and Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Stephen Broussard, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Charles Newirth, Stan Lee and Dan Mintz are executive producers. The film releases May 3, 2013, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

We’ve known since Shane Black took over the director’s chair from Jon Favreau that Iron Man 3 would embrace a darker tone more along the lines of The Dark Knight, described as an “technological crisis thriller.” From the footage we saw at Comic-Con and the descriptions of the Iron Man 3 trailer, this holds true and we expect Stark to deal with major personal loss and conflict.

Oddly enough, while the “enemy” mentioned in the plot description refers to the Mandarin character who’s goal (at least one of them) is to destroy Stark’s life and status as a hero, there’s no mention of Stark’s friend and ally James “Rhodey” Rhodes (War Machine) who we learned yesterday will have more of his story explored in the Iron Man 3 prequel comic.

Fans can head to the official Iron Man Facebook page and ‘like’ to help re-energize Stark’s Arc reactor and thereby release a sneak preview for Iron Man 3. We already know the trailer release date on October 23 and there’s no target amount of ‘likes’ so we don’t know if fans can affect the trailer release date.

It won’t be long before we find out how the future of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man will be changed forever.

Iron Man 3 is directed by Shane Black based off of his and Drew Pearce’s screenplay, and stars Robert Downey Jr., Ben Kingsley, Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce, Jon Favreau, Rebecca Hall, William Sadler, James Badge Dale and the voice of Paul Bettany.

Iron Man 3 releases May 3, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015 and Ant-Man on November 6, 2015.

  1. Why must the phrase “embrace a darker tone” always be followed by “along the lines of the Dark Knight?”

    • I’d say because it’s the most apt, relevant and relatable comparison.

      • How would anyone know until the movie comes out if it could be a relatable comparison?

(just joking with this next line)

I think Screenrant gets a nickle each time Nolans Batman is compared to another movie.

        ;)

        • Because of the director and writer on IM3. Thats how we know. :)

  2. So, no Extremedrunkennis? You could tell this story with booze.

  3. Can’t wait for this. It already sounds like this will be better than the first two. Extremis Iron Man action, Star-spangled War Machine, Cyborgs, The Mandarin, possilbe Ant Man credits scene. Sounds like a great start to Phase 2!

  4. I think Marvel has a real chance to recapture the magic of IM1 with this one. This sounds like a true sequel to the IM story than the prequel to TA IM2 was. If the story is Iron Man centric with War Machine and Falcon as a supporting cast, it looks like it could be a well constructed story. I vote for dark and gritty instead of being The Dark Knight related go with The Empire Strikes Back.

    • Uh, when did the Falcon join the cast? That’s deffinatly NOT going to happen in IM3. Falcon is completely a Captain America centric character and to be honest I don’t totally agree with having him in that movie either (as of yet, I’ll hold my final opinion untill I see some test footage of him or a trailer for CA2)

      • OH wow good catch, you’re totaly right that Falcon is going to be in the Cap movie. I’m getting my movies mixed up, thanks for the correction.

  5. Dark and gritty for look and feel…… That’s fine.

But please, for the love of all things holy, don’t emulate the terrible ponderous dialog of Nolan’s Dark Knight. If Iron Man 3 is loaded with pseudo-philosophical bullsh** to explain the motivations of why Tony Stark is or isn’t a superhero….. I’m dropping the whole franchise.

Keep the humor and wit, and I’m in.

    • I don’t think we need to worry. Its Marvel Studios. The word philosophical is’nt in their dictionary. (Not that its a bad thing.)

    • I guess depth in your dialogue is unwanted? I get it you hate Nolan but the dark knights script is beautiful. and helps tell a great story. A darker ironman could use some.

      • i get its a comic book movie and stark is a smart ass but I don’t see how adding layers is a bad thing.

        • Layers are good. Philosophy is good.

Low brow philosophy (for beginners) in an awkward diatribe is not. Nobody talks like that. It’s clumsy and it’s not the way people speak…… Unless they are teaching sophomore philosophy to High School students.

I like Nolan’s plots. But his dialog (especially in TDKR) is condescendingly irritating.

Don’t TELL me what I’m supposed to be thinking.

          Show me.

          • Nobody talks like Thor either, both are fictional characters. I’m seeing little problem with believing the dialogue of a fictional norse God, is different than a fictional psychopath aka the joker or any character in the film. Gordon never speaks with any philosophy, its mainly just Bruce, and his villains who are highly educated fictional men.

            • Actually, there are thousands of Asgardians and probably even more on the other 8 worlds/realms that speak like Thor – more than those that don’t on little ol’ Midgard.

In all serious, though, I would glady give up “weight/gravitas/philosophy” for Fun-Factor, any day of the week, regarding the Mavel movies.

        • Adding layers deffinatly isn’t, character depth is never a bad thing. Irom Man (or most marvel stuff really) just isn’t the kinda character or concept that needs to get Batmanishly over phillisophical. It still needs to retain its humor and wit but possibly add just a good bit of edge in a industrial espionague kind of way.

    • “Keep the humor and wit, and I’m in.”

Two words: Shane Black. I don’t think you need to worry. ;)

      • So true! Shane Black did kiss kiss bang bang, the long kiss good night, and many other action but hilarious movies. I think he will definetley keep the humor and wit.

    • I am hoping that Tony will keep his wit and humor too! I read that you can still expect Tony’s fun personality but just with a grimmer story to the movie

  6. Leslie Bibb is not going to be in this?

    • she better be!!!

  7. love marvel, and I totally LOOOOVE iron man! Don’t know about you guys, but Dark knight rises sucked, and they missed the mark. Iron man will be good, because it has a great writer and director without the big head and self indulgence of Christopher Nolan. Dont get me wrong, I loved Dark knight, but iron man was much better, even the second one was more entertaining than DKR…

I love the take Shane black has on the material, spy espionage, Tom clancy, these words sounds amazing.

  8. Pepper could die. Then stark can go back to being a womanizing boozehound.

    • Pepper shouldn’t die but leave Stark for Hogan like she did in the comics.

      • Very interesting. If pepper ever wore a suit like ironman would that be jumping the shark you think? Read That in one of the comics she did and was called rescue. I mean sooner of later everybody who’s connected to a superhero eventually becomes “super” themselves (im thinking esp, hulk.. Red hulk.. Betty etc) fine for the comics BUT wondering on your take for the movie verse? Smart move or kinda stupid?

        • I don’t know how well Gwyneth Paltrow could pull that move off becoming a character who’s that much a part of the action. I guess it wouldn’t be that different with just shots of her actions/reactions from inside the helmet and a stunt double actually doing the parts of her wearing the suit.

But yeah, it doesn’t seem completely off the wall to have that happen somewhere down the line. I just wonder if they’d go the same direction of her getting hurt like Stark did where she gets a arc reactor implant to save her life just like he did. Then later on she finds the suit already made just for her.

          • since we’re on the subject of those reaction shots inside the suits, they seemed to bug me in the aqvengers, esp his fight with thor. that helmet seems like a tight fit on his head, and it would seem to me when thor head-butted him & dented his helmet, that should have caved in tony’s skull as well. it just looks as though he has almost a foot of room in there. he should be bruised more to, with being slammed around inside that thing. just a minor thing i guess, but sometimes it takes me out of the story.

            • Haha ya heck im always amazed he come out of those fights without a massive concussion. The suit can only absorb so much kinetic energy from an impact, how his brain isnt smashing uP against the insides of his skull is hilarious. But hey, suspension of disbeleif and all, would be no fun if thor just knocked him out on every blow lol

          • hmm ya the suit part for pepper, provided it was done logically (and compelingly) storywise id buy it but for her to get her own chest implant, thats pushing it.

            • I know, thats just the way I believe they did it for her in the comics. I really don’t care about that part of it as long as they take Pepper from being the supportive love interest to hands on Iron reascuer in a logical and sensible way.

      • I don’t think that Pepper should die, leave tony, or have a suit for her own. I think her character is a great aspect to the movie already and the way she is as being very loyal and always looking out for Tony is a huge part in the movies. If her part changed that drastically, I would most definetely say that would be way “jumping the shark”. So many fans love Pepper and I believe her character is right where she needs to be.

  9. Sounds pretty interesting! Can’t wait for a trailer :)
