First Look at Radically New ‘Iron Man 3′ Armor

UPDATE: Scroll Down for Hi-Res Images & Video of the New Iron Man Armor on Display!

Back at Comic-Con 2009 Marvel Studios commanded a dominating presence on the expo floor by bringing the hall of armor for Iron Man 2 with all three of Iron Man’s armor suits from the first film. After following up in 2010 and 2011 with Thor’s Asgardian throne room and the bridge of the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier from The Avengers, respectively, Marvel is back with another film set recreation.

This one is an upgraded (read: expanded) hall of armor for Iron Man 3, containing seven suits from the franchise thus far. Today, there are eight suits on display…

After hearing whisperings of Marvel Studios shipping in something special related to a new armor suit for Iron Man 3 just for today, Marvel confirmed the buzz by sharing a photo from their Comic-Con 2012 booth before the show floor opened to the public and standing front in center was a never-before-scene armored suit, with quite a unique look.

Unlike the standard Iron Man armor designs that use red as its primary color, this one inverts the color scheme by embracing a golden design.

Now, check out video of the armor on display:

The golden design is seemingly inspired by the Extremis concepts from the comics, of which this film is sourcing story details from and the gold is quite a contrast from the usual red-focused designs. The question now becomes, will Tony Stark have other suits in addition to this one or will that all be saved for War Machine and the villains? What does this mean for Iron Man’s armor in The Avengers 2 and will we ever see an adaptation of the Hulkbuster armor?

We’ll find out more about IM3 and the rest of the Marvel cinematic universe tonight during the Marvel Studios hall H panel.

Be sure to follow all our live Comic-Con 2012 coverage right here! Also check out the Iron Man 3 concept art.

Iron Man 3 is directed by Shane Black based off of his and Drew Pearce’s screenplay, and stars Robert Downey Jr., Ben Kingsley, Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce, Jon Favreau, Rebecca Hall, Cobie Smulders, William Sadler, James Badge Dale and the voice of Paul Bettany.

Iron Man 3 releases May 3, 2013, Thor 2 on November 8, 2013, Captain America 2 on April 4, 2014 and (likely) Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014.

What do you think of the new Iron Man 3 armor?

I’m really liking the design, but I don’t dig the pale gold color.

Well this might be like the comics where you gets his ass beat before taking extremis. Extremis is gold and if he has just gotten it this might be a rushed or low material the over emphasises the gold because he can’t yet control extremis.

Wasn’t aware of the Iron Patriot angle, thought (hoped) that Cap had been given a suit — for space/undersea/otherdimensional battle or other plausible reason.

Whedon did wonders in _Avengers_ getting the less-than-invulnerable characters to pull their weight in battle, but just think what Hawk and BW could bring if they had Stark suits? And Cap, well, that shield of his can’t block simultaneous shots from opposite directions. Of course it would have to be temporary, to not completely break character concepts. File it under “pure effin’ speculation” and “would be interesting…”

This would be Mark 8 if l’m counting correctly. Not sure if the briefcase suit counts so it may be Mark 7

if this’ll be the armor after the Avengers armor, then it’s the Mark VIII. I.e. The Avengers armor was the mark VII.

New photos do make it look a little better than the cell phone pictures. I feel a little better seeing those. I imagine Hollywood lighting will make it look even better than convention center lighting. *slight sigh of relief*

If i remember correctly, in IM1 doesn’t Tony make the suit out of a gold material to deal with the freezing problem at high altitudes? then he tells jarvis to throw some red in…

this seems like the reverse! does he wear this gold armor in the extremis storyline?

    Reply
    • kristina    11 months ago

He does wear gold armor in the last couple of the 6 Extremis issues. He does adopt more red later on, once he not trying to save the country and himself from the bad guy. At the time he gets injected with the Extremis virus, he is about to die from internal injuries, so I doubt he was really worried about color schemes.

I agree with Mercy that a great story line will trump all, but I’m not digging the changes.

First, it feels like change for the sake of change, which is never good. They’ve rolled out several suits so far with red as the primary color. I don’t see the benefit of such a massive change.

Looking at the close-ups, I would like it better if at least the chest plate were (was?) still red. The gold is a bit overpowering for my taste.

Also, someone mentioned the heroic age armor. It’s pretty sweet, I support it.

This armor does have a different feel, that is true. But with the announcement of the Extremis story arc, this suit choice does make sense. The introduction of the Extremis virus completely redefines the dynamic between Tony Stark and the Ironman armor. They literally become one at a pivotal point where Tony is inches from death after a fight against a superior enemy, which he is totally underprepared for (e.g. the villain has Extremis and Tony can’t keep up). Also, keep in mind that CGI can work magic these days, so the plastic-like appearance the the coloring will look very differently in the film.

I hope this might be his space armor or something along those lines and not his primary armor. If it’s just a suit for certain environments, then I think it’s pretty cool.

For a second let’s look at it this way,

The movies are in fact an adaptation of the comic books,

Dont forget with Iron man for instance there’s the armour wars and demon in a bottle story lines obviously they’ve touched on both in iron man 2 but for all intents and purposes there is a toy business in all of this and we have to appease the children as well as the die hards which mean we will most likely never see Mr Stark use another Billion Dollar Iron Man suit to drunkenly attack anyone.

Anyone see where I am going with this.

All I am saying is don’t forget this movie universe is just that it’s an entirely new play ground for Marvel, Paramount, Sony and Fox its not the mainstream marvel universe because that belongs to Marvel Comics not Marvel Studios, (we could quite easily have had the mainstream marvel universe by this I mean 616 for the die hards) but let’s face it that would not only be boring for the people who’ve been collecting the comic book counterparts for the best part of the 20th century and all of the 21st, but lest we not forget marvel in the nineties sold the screen rights to some of these movies to companies such as Sony and Fox.

This story line is more than likely going to be toned down and extremely different to the comic book’s to my left.

Which is most likely why this absoloutely aesthetically stunning suit design was chosen.

If you’re going to turn around and say Iron Man has always been Red and Gold then for the best part of fifty years yes he has but you’ve the Mk II in the comic books (all gold with an antenna), Silver Centurion (Red and Silver), the stealth Armor (used no repulsors and was virtually silent), all of these are different colours even the hydro armour is all gold.

My main point is they are having fun with it all, if it’s a bit of a change then so what the movies aren’t the Iron Man we Know but he sure is the shell head we love.

New Iron Man suit don’t look good to me- it seems to have a lot of patches (pain-killing patches?), unbecoming an Iron Man! What’s it made of- plastic?

I like the Golden Look. Stark likes his toys, he’s used different versions of the armor so far. Why wouldn’t he rock a new one?

I’d like to see this new look play a role in IM3, maybe absorb, repel, space, deep sea, stealth, anti-MAGIC.

I have a prediction to make! Iron Man 1 had only Tony Stark as the hero in armor. Iron Man 2 had both Tony Stark and James Rhodes as heros in armor. Its only fitting to say that Iron Man 3 will have 3 in armor Tony Stark, James Rhodes and Pepper Potts. 1, Tony Stark as Iron Man. 2, James Rhodes as War Machine. 3, Pepper Potts as Rescue. I got my info on the 3 from the animated series “Iron Man Armored Adventures.”

do you really think pepper will be in armor? im not so sure. pretty ladies tend to be showed off in films, i think the armor might take the whole sex appeal away. unless of course you know something we dont?

      Reply
      • kristina    11 months ago

I don’t think they will be going that direction quite yet. Pepper gets armor because Tony saves her life with an arc reactor of her own. We already know that the villains will be related to Extremis and the Mandarin from the press releases. The Rescue armor is introduced in entirely different story arcs in the Stark Resilient storyline. I don’t think they will be, but good thought. I only say this because the Extremis arc completely redefines Tony Stark/Ironman as a character because the Armor literally becomes a part of him.

its hard not to see the armor and think iron man. cgi has done wonders for us in the geekosphere to expand our imagery of these characters, but i think it could use a little more red. not that i would not see the movie because of it, but with story lines fluxing all the time it would be nice if some things stayed the same. in the realm of genuine character appearance, also if anyone else agrees, i feel the avengers hulk, in character as well as appearance was superior in the avengers film. mark did a great job with bruce banner and the size and movement nature in the cgi creation of the hulk was quite convincing to original standard.

The suit looks cool but the paint sucks it shouldn’t be all gold like that the red should be where the gold is and the gold should be where the red is the paint style on this just makes it look awful I hope they change it
