First Look at Radically New ‘Iron Man 3′ Armor

UPDATE: Scroll Down for Hi-Res Images & Video of the New Iron Man Armor on Display!

Back at Comic-Con 2009 Marvel Studios commanded a dominating presence on the expo floor by bringing the hall of armor for Iron Man 2 with all three of Iron Man’s armor suits from the first film. After following up in 2010 and 2011 with Thor’s Asgardian throne room and the bridge of the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier from The Avengers, respectively, Marvel is back with another film set recreation.

This one is an upgraded (read: expanded) hall of armor for Iron Man 3, containing seven suits from the franchise thus far. Today, there are eight suits on display…

After hearing whisperings of Marvel Studios shipping in something special related to a new armor suit for Iron Man 3 just for today, Marvel confirmed the buzz by sharing a photo from their Comic-Con 2012 booth before the show floor opened to the public and standing front in center was a never-before-scene armored suit, with quite a unique look.

Unlike the standard Iron Man armor designs that use red as its primary color, this one inverts the color scheme by embracing a golden design.

Now, check out video of the armor on display:

The golden design is seemingly inspired by the Extremis concepts from the comics, of which this film is sourcing story details from and the gold is quite a contrast from the usual red-focused designs. The question now becomes, will Tony Stark have other suits in addition to this one or will that all be saved for War Machine and the villains? What does this mean for Iron Man’s armor in The Avengers 2 and will we ever see an adaptation of the Hulkbuster armor?

We’ll find out more about IM3 and the rest of the Marvel cinematic universe tonight during the Marvel Studios hall H panel.

Be sure to follow all our live Comic-Con 2012 coverage right here! Also check out the Iron Man 3 concept art.

Iron Man 3 is directed by Shane Black based off of his and Drew Pearce’s screenplay, and stars Robert Downey Jr., Ben Kingsley, Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce, Jon Favreau, Rebecca Hall, Cobie Smulders, William Sadler, James Badge Dale and the voice of Paul Bettany.

Iron Man 3 releases May 3, 2013, Thor 2 on November 8, 2013, Captain America 2 on April 4, 2014 and (likely) Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014.

  1. I like it with more red than gold. It is still pretty cool though.

  2. Yikes.

    • Closer and better look. Yikes.

      • Thanks Ignur! I’m surprised SR didn’t post a few close up shots.
I agree though, it looks pretty bad :(
I get that Stark has to upgrade his armor (it’s who he is and what he does: constant evolution and progression of technology), but Stark always keeps his suits stylish. This is not stylish IMAO.
It is a shame since there are so many other variations they could have used! The stealth armor, Hulkbuster, Silver Century, etc, etc.

Maybe it’ll look better in action, but from the images alone, I’m not impressed. Not impressed at all…

        • Woops, sorry SR.
I posted my comment before you guys updated the article with the phone pics.

(If you need a camera man, I have a pretty sweet Canon with a 10x zoom… all you need to do is fly me out to San Diego and get me a CC pass then I’ll take the pics for free for you guys! ;))

          • @Avenger – I took more with my 16MP camera but had to wait to find decent internet signal to upload them :) Took the phone pics as a back to get something on the site.

Hope you enjoy them. It looks pretty damn cool up close.

            Paul

            • Thanks Paul!
The high-res pics looks a lot better, but IMO the suit/colors still looks pretty horrendous in general :(

        • that armor has way too much GOLD.

they got to use Spandau Ballet – Gold song to promote this armor LOL

          “Gold
          Always believe in your soul
You’ve got the power to know
          You’re indestructible
Always believe in, because you are
          Gold”

          :P

        • @TheAvengers

The design is dope. Coloring is horrendous IMO

FYI I had a link posted in my second comment for a closer look on the suit. I wasnt being a complete a**, only marginally lol.

          • Yeah, it’s pretty much just the colors that are so off-putting.
If they’d have reversed the colors (red as the main color with the gold – but a more “shiny” and less pale gold – as the secondary color) it would look so much better…

Still, even though the actual design ain’t that bad, I still think they could have done a bit more with it (or do something completely different like the Hulkbuster armor).

            • Yeah I would hardly characterize that color as “gold”. Looks almost like a metallic beige or ecru.

              So yes, yuck. :P

“The golden design is seemingly inspired by the Extremis concepts from the comics”

also a bit confused by this statement because I thought the Extremis design (which should be model 30) was still primarily red.

              http://images.wikia.com/marveldatabase/images/0/0a/Extremis-armor.jpg

    • Yikes you’re right. And right again on the color scheme.
The colors might work in reverse with the what’s
now light dark and what’s now dark light.

  3. Ewwwww.

  4. i knew it, its more like the bleeding edge armour, but i hav mixed reactions. it might look really good in the movie but it has just a lttle too much gold.i would prefer mark 6 and 7 mixed with bleeding edge now thts an armour. seriously is can anyone with good photoshop skills draw this concept. if u can plzz reply

  5. Looks like you guys need to get a new camera, as the focus is obviously broken on this one.

    • @Sean – Digital zoom on a Razr only does so much. Closest I could get to the armor was about 20 feet.

      Paul

  6. Your nit picking a real life suit of Iron Man armor?
Six, seven years ago i never would have imagined all this. Now I’m looking at Tony Stark’s hall of armor?
Granted they cant fly or shoot, but they do look awesome all lit up and shiny.

    • Why do you insist on keeping low standards? Are you then saying that we should have all loved Spider-Man 3 just because we at least got to see Venom…

  7. Not liking this one so much. Maybe if it was more gold, this looks to pale, more like a beige. Looks like primer waiting for a paint job.

    • Gold would be better. Beige never works. Beige is the color of dull.

  8. That being said, Iron Man’s Heroic Age armor needs to adapted for film. Google it.

  9. Cant say I’m really digging this one too much. Its a neat design but the gold is throwing it off. If they were to change the chest piece and make it red and add more red to the upper thigh then it would look better. It seems they were going for the bleeding edge armor, but the bleeding edge armor has a balance of red and gold. Probably because making gold the primary doesnt look so hot :/. Alas, still looking forward to this movie.

  10. It needs R2D2 right next to it.

    • o.O………ok that was good.

    • lol

  11. that looks terrible. probably a representation of how the movie will be….

    • shut up with the negativety. its going to be a great movie

  12. Not liking it. Between this and the “Iron Patriot/Detroit whatever” I am getting a Shumacher Vibe from this one…

  13. I can live with the back view and the profile, but from the front is just looks … VANILLA ! In all ways. Sorry – if they were trying to make him look the way he does in the comics these days, you STILL have to maintain red boots & shoulder pads, at the very least.

This has no flavor. It looks like a pack of pidgeons pooped all over Iron Man’s armor. Hope they fix this. For real.

  14. There is supposedly an Antman announcement at the IM3 panel too FYI

  15. Hey, like everything else, I save final judgement for the movie, but man, this looks a little sketch. I like the design of the suit, but the color looks mad weird. Maybe it just the camera or the light. Either way, I’ll get over it.

  16. The design is awesome. Buy the coloring? WTF? There was nothing wrong with the same basic design that went from suit to suit. If they were going to make such a drastic change, I’d have preferred the same general paint job as they’ve before, but on a completely re-designed suit.

  17. It’s almost as if he was wearing a normal armor and added some gold substance over it. Because if you look at the hands it looks like it overtook what was already there. Almost like a nano tech suit over the original in my opinion. :p

  18. Solid Gold ! …hmm! never seen this type of armor suit

  19. A bit different, I’m sure their is a valid reason for such a change……good news for those that hate it is that he’ll get a new suit in Avengers 2.

    • Avengers 2? Hell, he’ll have a new suit by the end of THIS!

      • Oh yeah Iron Man 1 and 2 saw three suits each. He’ll have at least two suits here. Just think of it this way, if THIS is what they are willing to show us, how awesome must the other ones be?

        • In my honest opinion, the Mark VII (the suit that deploys as a missile, of which you can’t find any images online, and automatically assembles over Tony) is the best suit and that should be his only suit. Although this one is cool, if confusing.

  20. Yeah, it needs the Hot Rod Red from all the other models. It just looks…off. Designs fine aside from the coloring though.

  21. are they gonna keep introducing new armor in every movie? how about focusing more on character development and story?

    • But this is a marvel character and a marvel movie, so character development and story are of very little importance

      • The armor is part of the character, hence the name IRON MAN. To focus on the Iron Man suit is not bad, in fact it probably should be done. To say that focusing on Iron Man’s suit is taking attention away from story and character is like saying that Bat-Man’s suit-changes and addition of new gadgets in each of the Nolan-directed movies is taking away from their story and character development. Pretty

Plus, I would think the people writing the story don’t have as much control over the aesthetics and special effects unless they’re the director (and I suppose the director has authority to change the story up a lot).

    • No, the armor and its heads up display are the most interesting things about the Iron Man movies because it just makes you wish you had one of those suits, and that you could have a HUD like that in your everyday vision.

      I’m a HUD geek.

  22. Looks like the armour from last week’s concept art of Tony Stark with a smoking armour piece

  23. I lahv GOOOOOOLD.

  24. I really like the back and even the sides, since it’s more evened out in the red-gold coloration in those places. The front is the only place that looks off if you’re looking at it straight-on, since the angle makes the beige . I’m betting if it were a true gold instead of a beige it would be REALLY harsh-looking and unfitting for .

Also, I like the tighter armor design. It just shows that the armor is getting less clunky while retaining its strong defensive capabilities. However, that doesn’t mean bigger armor (like the Hulkbuster) wouldn’t be useful additions to Stark’s armory.

    • Sorry, I should have kept adding: Since the straight-on front angle makes the beige overpower the red.

    • But, but, but clunky and complicated is better.

I hate this new obsession with simple designs everyone has. Like Windows 8, it sickens me.

See, this guy has the right idea for how a computer should look:

      http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_VMM6NbGU09A/TKnjpdwQaJI/AAAAAAAAAAc/oXForfAP_nY/s1600/Command_Center_Rain_Meter_Skin_by_Jon_Markovski.jpg

      Really awesome and complex.

The same goes for anything. Enough with the simplistic designs, already.

Because this new armor has so many little diddly details, and is thus complex, it has my seal of approval.

  25. I like it. Rob Keyes’ keytones might be off a bit with his cell phone camera. HA!

    • @Heustis – I actually took those while Rob was back at the hotel room. Team effort here on SR :D

We just updated the gallery with higher resolution pics.

      Paul

      • Mea Culpa Paul.

The photos didn’t look bad before, and I think we should be grateful to see anything from the Con. The higher res pics look great.

Thank you Paul and Rob and the rest of the Screen Rant gang.

  26. It is possible to tweak the colors in digital post production
and if fan reaction remains as it is now changes might happen.

  27. Ok there are plenty of reasons why this color scheme looks less than fantastic and I’m probably the last person on here listened to but surely the effects houses have heard of this company; http://alsacorp.com

I would think that they could have found something from them to get to Comic-Con in such short order…

  28. They should’ve used the red and silver with the big shoulders from the armor wars. This gold suit seems like one of many designs that didn’t quite make it to the film.

  29. it’s golden armor. hell yes!
