Checking back in with next summer’s most anticipated movie, Iron Man 2, we have some new updates about War Machine, the armored battle suit worn by Jim “Rhodey” Rhodes, who will be played by Don Cheadle in the sequel, taking over the role from Iron Man‘s Terrence Howard.

The first update comes from Cheadle himself, talking about his performance as Rhodey/War Machine armor and hinting at how much screen time the actual armor will get. The second update comes our way via Sam Rockwell, who stars as Iron Man 2‘s evil mastermind industrialist Justin Hammer, the man who (we now know) will be responsible for creating the War Machine armor and sticking Rhodey in the cockpit.

Both of these updates come our way via MTV Splash Page, who have been diligent about keeping up on all things Iron Man 2.

First let’s check out what Don Cheadle had to say about playing Rhodey/War Machine:

“I think the character that I play, my CGI character worked as much as I worked,” he said. “The stuntman worked as much as I worked. It’s a huge undertaking. It was great. It was a really different experience than I have worked on before.”

And what about snagging the role from Terrance Howard – were there any hard feelings between the two actors?

“Terrence is a friend of mine…But the actual playing [of Rhodey], I just felt like it was my role. I wasn’t made to feel like I had to sort of take care of what was done before. I really feel like I could make it my own.”

I like what Cheadle says about his CGI and stuntman counterparts ‘working as hard as he did’; it at least suggests that we’re going to get some good War Machine sequences in the movie. As for the Terrence Howard thing… no offense to Howard but I think people quickly got over the re-casting “scandal” once they learned an actor the caliber of Don Cheadle was being tapped as a replacement…

Onto the interview with Sam Rockwell, from which we have this lovely video:

In case you didn’t catch the vid, here’s the quote you want to pay attention to:

“Don’s character, Rhodey, needs to work with me. He has no choice…So we team up and we build this fabulous War Machine.”

We already know from earlier reports/photos that Iron Man 2 will focus (in part) on Tony Stark’s attempts to keep the Iron Man technology out of the hands of those who might misuse it (including the government), while simultaneously trying to fulfill his obligations as a newly-outed hero. An MTV interview with Don Cheadle during Comic-Con this past summer also hinted at growing friction between Tony and Rhodey, as the former sets off down his own path, while the latter has to honor his obligation to the military.

Just check out this video from that Comic-Con interview and then tell me if YOU think we’ll be seeing an Iron Man vs. War Machine showdown:

Finally, some big news: Splash Page‘s most recent talks with Cheadle revealed that the actor will indeed have a starring role in The Avengers! Will War Machine be joining in the adventures of Captain America, Thor and Ol’ Shellhead? Will he be an obstacle in their path? Either way, we’re all eager to find out!

What do you think about the latest word on War Machine in Iron Man 2 and The Avengers? Are you on ‘Team Cheadle’ or are you still cheerleading (in vain) for ‘Team Howard’?

  1. Sounds all good to me.

  2. I wish I knew more about the Iron man universe. Is this how it plays out in the comics, or are they taking their own spin on this relationship?

  3. Okay, I am back from reading War Machine’s back story, and it was dumb as hell (at least the version I read was). This seems to be a much better story of the development of War Machine.

  4. War Machine in The Avengers? He will probably be an enemy but they’re giving away way too much info. Now we know he won’t die in Iron Man 2 if he appears in the avengers.

  5. From the pre-production videos that we’ve seen in numerous interviews, I firmly believe that Stark was forced by the government to hand in at least a part of his Iron Man tech for national defense purposes. So, after he has built his Mark 4 armor, he reluctantly gave away his Mark 2 armor to the government, hence the empty Mark 2 armor chamber in his Hall of Armors.

Rhodey brings the Mark 2 armor to Hammer, and as we’ve seen, he requested Hammer to put in everything from the M134 minigun to FN or HK full-auto assault rifles. The result is the awesome War Machine armor, which I suspect doesn’t have a powerful Arc Reactor, and doesn’t have JARVIS as the tactical operating system. Hence War Machine’s reliance on Hammer to co-exist and to co-operate.

However, it would appear that Whiplash managed to reverse-engineer an Arc Reactor. Hence, Hammer is interested in working with him, and providing him with superior armor technology in exchange for the reverse-engineered Arc Reactor because it is what Hammer could use to deploy a battalion of powered armor soldiers (something that could lead up to an Armor Wars storyline).

Tony’s experimenting with his own particle accelerator in his basement because he’s trying to research on particle physics and how he could come up with a more powerful alternative to the Arc Reactor. Possibly this is how he develops his Beta Particle Generator that powers his more advanced armors, up till the Mark 6 (if the toys are anything to go by).

  6. Jae Senn,

Love your story, sounds really interesting because most of it sounds true to me as well..I dont understand though how War Machine and Iron Man turn against each other though..I know in the comics there is a growing friction between the 2 (Tony and Rhodes)..LOL I sure would love to see a Iron Man Vs. War Machine scence where because Tony only turned in a portion of Iron Man tech suit or refused to turn in the entire suit some how Rhodes gets a hold of the armor plans and tells Sam Rockwell to build him a machine with all the gaggets, Machine guns, etc he asks for then unexpectedly he finds Iron Man and trys to destory him or something.

  7. @Jae Senn:

I like your idea of leading into the Armor Wars story line for IM3. I know Favereu(?) has mentioned several times that he’d like to get the Mandarin involved in the movies, but I really think the Armor Wars would translate soooooo much better on the big screen.

  8. “War Machine in The Avengers? He will probably be an enemy”

    why would you say that?

  9. Team Cheadle mos def

  10. @ Panda

I’m only guessing that war machine would be an enemy in the avengers because of how things seem to be lining up in IM2. Stark and Rhodey are friends but because of the government interference I see friction building up between them. I guess we’ll see how it plays out.

  11. wonderful best film iron man 2

  12. Much like every other super hero movie of late the rewriting of long held story lines is going to ruin Iron Man! I would bet my last dollar that special effects will be great but the story is going to suck. Once a heroes identity is public knowledge it ruins the whole story!

  13. Yes, there is an acual war machine in the comics, google it.

  14. War Machine is better then ironman i think also i like the new roady but the old one seemed to fit the role better

  15. but what do you all think
