I’m not sure where this is headed, but Paramount is in the early stages of a viral campaign for Iron Man 2 that right now looks reminiscent of some of what was done (quite successfully) for The Dark Knight. Last week they released a newspaper clipping which (if real) would have been written right at the end of the first Iron Man movie. It looked like the edges were burnt and torn and it was an article about the revelation that Tony Stark revealed to the world that he is Iron Man.

Today we bring you the second newspaper clip released, which you can see right here (click on image for larger version):

I’ve typed up the text of the article, but it’s nothing ground breaking, it just basically talks about the news conference that Tony Stark held when he returned from his captivity in Afghanistan:

In a move which caused shockwaves in markets around the world, Tony Stark declared that Stark Industries will be getting out of the weapons business. The announcement came hours after the CEO was rescued from terrorists who had been holding him hostage in an undisclosed location in the Middle East.

Sources within Stark Industries have said that the proposed changes in the company’s business structure would likely devastate the weapons giant. Stark is the country’s largest defense contractor and supplies materials, services and technology to some 30 other nations.

Markets from Tokyo to London reeled from the news on Tuesday, with investors stampeding to dump Stark shares. Indexes fell 4% on average.

Stark Industries was founded during World War II by industrialist Howard Stark. When President Roosevelet declared that the United States would build fifty thousand planes to fight the armies of Hirohito and Hitler, Stark rose to the challenge and set about building an astounding one hundred —

I’ve gone over the entire thing and can’t find anything resembling a hidden clue. Like the first one it has torn/burnt edges and looks to be against a rough stone background. These look like the clippings collected by Whiplash in his poster. I know that at some point there will be some website associated with this which will be discovered or revealed in the coming weeks.

What do you think? Any ideas?

Iron Man 2 opens on May 7, 2010.

  1. Ernie Avila is the set designer, and James rothwell is works with animatics on the film.Following the P.Buckner, and N.King from the first clue. In the article alot of the letters seem to stand out as darker than the others, and could be meant to go together with the misspellings of the first article. Also the yellow magic marker with green tint to it ,marks over STARK this time, put them together and it is SECRET STARK in the order of the clues (Ivan can`t be Tonys brother…) let`s work peeps…and please keep to this movie ok. NO HULK OR HAWKEYE OR SECRET WARS nonesense. Another nore is the picture. Looks atlantian almost but don`t scream NAMOR just yet. The photo is taken by a J.M (last names looks like Edgins jr) and that does not fit with any ironman crew member i have found,so maybe the picture has no meaning and is meant as a diversion…..Best guess so far is that we have to work with the letter highligthed and the previous misspellings…

  2. Well “Stark” in this one and “Secret” in the previous one have been obviously highlighted (by Whiplash, one presumes). I don’t know if there’s anything deeper going on here… but it’s always possible.

  3. I never saw any of TDK viral campaign, the whole fad seems to have passed me by.

Still, Iron Man 2 is going to the definitive comic book movie

  4. J M Eddins jr (listed as guy who took the photo)actually works for the washington post. I googled him and came up with an editorial from today: Black Panther battle intensifies. Is the Justice Department against civil rights?

This does however look like a legit editorial about the new Black Panther party….Did have me going i must say

  5. DrSam

Always bringing up TDK. You are obsessed! Just kidding pal! :)

  6. The only thing that stands out right now are the highlighted words. From the first article “Secret” and now “Stark”.

  7. Maybe the clue is “Walking on Air” ??? A possible reference to the Mandarin, maybe.

  8. Well you notice the Walking on air guy has his head removed.

So, Whiplash makes some sort of tech and as usual Tony Stark STILL gets top billing over him.

He is still the walking guy and something happened to him becasue of Stark. (obvious he has a grudge of some sort)

Those pillars escape me… they are part of a great piece of foreign landmark. I just cant place it though….

  9. The Clue is ???. Walking on air is a reference to thor. Plus if you look close at the guy he has winged feet. He most likely mentioned or will cameo in the film. Maybe an intro for avengers or his own movie.

    Thats my 2 cents

  10. If it wasn’t so huge on what looks like the front page of the newspaper I’d think that walking on air thing was an ad for sneakers.

  11. They look like tennis shoes to me.. :D

  12. @ aknot Corinthian style columns:

Look at it in the timeline of the movie too. This article would have been published during the middle of the movie before he revealed he is Iron Man.

Sorry, but that is a VERY bad clone-stamping (photoshop function) run amok on the right side of the picture. That is driving me nuts… It’s episode 2: Attack of the Clone Stamps!

  13. Those are the ones. I saw it on a TV thing. Hey they are foreign if you are not from the US… :D

  14. Some of the capital letters look bolded, maybe that is something

  15. Wow… interesting puzzle we have here.

Unfortunately, I can’t make heads or tails of too much of the articles (had monitor issues, now fixed)), but I’ve noticed some interesting misspellings though (like “Roosevelet”, for example).

The mystery deepens… and that’s what makes this so much fun!

  16. maybe whiplashes pa was a stock broker and got stuck in an elevator when stark pulled his doozy..

then he just took the elevator to the top floor and jumped.

    id be pretty P O d too.

about the add, the picture has to play a huge clue, otherwise why include it. maybe the location??

  17. Ok – I think the clues are leading to the personal/mental state of Stark in IRONMAN 2. He’s always been in the spot light for being a genius/playboy, etc. and has dealt with it accordingly. Now he’s under increased scrutiny for being a superhero and the added pressure is going to lead to him being the boozebag he is in the comics.

The first clue is him staring at an article about him making a HUGE change in his life and my guess is he’s drinking and gazing at the story about him that changed his life.

The person in the picture looks a lot more like Hercules than Thor, but reminds me of Prometheus. Prometheus was charged with pushing a huge ass rock up and down a hill for all of eternity and could be looked at as a metaphor for all of the responsibility Stark now has on his shoulders. The pressure of being a billionaire playboy/superhero is the “rock” and now he’s drinking to cope.

  18. I believe that photo is from the temple of Artemis

  19. Ohhh,

was there a number in the last article,

theres a 30 in this one,

perhaps a 12 in the last one, or 9

    maybe a trailer date-

  20. As a follow up to my previous post:
The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus was destroyed on July 21, 356 BC in an act of arson committed by Herostratus. According to the story, his motivation was fame at any cost, thus the term herostratic fame.

So, perhaps the motivation of Whiplash is “Fame at Any Cost”

    Yea, it’s a bit of a stretch.

  21. isnt the person in the picture wearing a dress, like a girl, and shes got socks on,

also in the hilighted line down the page youve got build and war across from each other

  22. I have no desire to read anymore plot details or see anymore photos from Iron Man 2.

    I’m going to see it!!!!!
I don’t want the experience ruined with all this viral info bs,,,!

  23. i think theres another huge clue in the spacings, between some of the words a lot of them are double spaced.

noticibly in__a__move__ and so forth and its repeated throughout the article

  24. Rich – the spaces between ‘in a move’ have no relation towards the viral-e-ness of this. Its merely justified alignment practiced constantly in newspapers to fill paragraphs accordingly.

  25. Few more thoughts:

In the picture, you have an ambiguous person who appears to be crossing two squares by “walking on air”. I wonder if this is symbolic of the history of the U.S.A./Russia relationship. It’s an ambiguous person going (in the picture) from East to West. Plus — I’m not so sure that is a rock, it looks like a burned spot in the middle of the page.

The history of the pillars are that they were removed from the U.S. Capitol in 1958 as part of a renovation from an “EAST portico.” Think about it: A supporting pillar of government relocated to a garden to become nothing more than, well, a lawn ornament.

I guess the picture in a way is paradoxical: East vs West. Bridging a gap that was man made.

I have got to quit reading conspiracy sites. :) I don’t believe any of them, but they do make you think on different levels.

  26. it`s The Original Capitol Pillars at the National Arboretum in Washington DC

while you all concentrate on the picture that has nothing to do with the Article about Stark, I will see about the clues……. thor, hercules, hulk…what are you people on?

  27. Could the pillars represent the five founding members of the Avengers?

  28. 790 Viral campaigns never ruin any of the plot for you. Take these papers for example all they are doing is telling stories from Ironman one and possibly things that happened in between. At best they will lead up to a trailer or some kind of new image. For example take a look back at the TDK Viral stuff eventually it just unlocked a Joker picture and a few newspapers to cover the gap between the films. Nothing was really given away about the movie other than what you already knew from trailers.

DrSam why am I not shocked that you skipped that TDK Viral stuff. Lol I think you hated the film before you ever saw it.

  29. Rich, that’s just the way lines are spaced in newspapers.
