The viral campaign for next summer’s technically superior sequel, Iron Man 2, has kicked off and it is already making headlines…literally.

Superhero Hype was treated to an exclusive first offering from the folks behind the viral campaign, in the form of a mock press headline which details the “real-world” reaction to Tony Stark’s cavalier announcement that he is, in fact, the super hero known as Iron Man.

MTV Splash Page managed to do some microscopic legwork deciphering the text of the faux news clip. Here are some of the choice quotes:

“Stunning the world’s press, amazing captains of industry, delighting a curious public and thrilling children the world over, Tony Stark, CEO of Stark Enterprises, announced this week that he was the man behind Iron Man,”

“The mysterious metal-clad behemoth that has battled terrorists, challenged natural disasters and rescued thousands of people around the world, had people guessing as to his true identity.”

There is additional text, but you’ll have to jump on over to Splash Page to know what it’s all about. Here’s a look at the viral headline itself:

Yesterday I wrote that the one aspect of Iron Man 2 which has immediately jumped out at me is the (seemingly) cohesive nature of the story. The thought popped up when I saw the new Whiplash poster and noticed how all the newspaper clippings of Stark/Iron Man – which we also saw in those hi-res Iron Man 2 pics – were included in the Whiplash poster, hinting at the sort of ramifications Tony’s public exposure will have on the story of the second film.  This viral headline keeps in step with that theme, and has me officially interested in the puzzle the viral marketers will eventually piece together for us.

On that note: be sure to check back early next week – you never know when or where one of these viral promos is going to debut…

Iron Man 2 will be in theaters on May 7, 2010.

  1. Looks like Tony Stark has been drinking in the pic. Maybe a tie-in there.

  2. These viral campaigns are honestly amazing..

  3. Great way to use the internet to help market a movie in a very compelling way!!

  4. very nice way to kick off the campaign for IM2 movie… it was about time and only 6 mths before the movie, its just about time

  5. Smart savvy move! It’s going to be difficult to out-do IM1. If they can…it’s going to surpass many a movie, surprisingly to numerious movie fans I suspect. Even the seemingly coveted TDK. I gave Iron man 1 9.32177 out of 10. I gave TDK only 7 out of ten. IT REALLY HAD MANY CHANCES TO BE A SUPERIOR MOVIE. I would be delirious if IM2 hits such a wonderous high…I have only waited a lifetime for this! The origin was the easy part, lets see IRON MAN (and his nemesises) done justice! There are so many baddies to really choose from (e.g. Spymaster). It would be great to see the Mandarin. The “magic vs. machine” scenario is a great avenue to consider. I have hope. Being a lifelong fan, from all the way back to TALES OF SUSPENSE! I own almost every Iron Man comic there is, including the TOS’, but I’m not that old (44), I just searched the world over and was blessed to find them . May 7th can’t come fast enough!!Excelsior! ‘Nuff said.

  6. Ok this is out of nowhere but I have an idea for a possible capt america. As we all know the guy has to actually be an american actor to play cap and we’ve had a hard time finding anyone (hinse the total lack of news about the first avenger). What about the guy from the new tv show human target? He could be a bit old, it depends on how they do the cap thing but I could almost see him as cap (at least more than anyone else I’ve heard so far) his name is Mark Thomas Valley. What do we think?

  7. im checking out the highlighted part it reading so far stark’s secret confession
