Iron Man 2: New Behind the Scenes Footage
Sep 25, 2009 by Paul YoungIf you’re a long time Iron Man comic book fan, there MAY be reason for you to geek out even further over ‘Iron Man 2.’

The most anticipated movie of 2010 is, without a doubt, Iron Man 2. Come May of next year, James Cameron’s Avatar will be a distant memory and the only thing fans boys and girls want to see is Iron Man(Robert Downey Jr), Whiplash (Mickey Rourke), War Machine (Don Cheadle) and the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).
Last night Entertainment Tonight aired a six minute segment that included new behind the scenes footage from the set of Iron Man 2 which included some spectacular crash scenes, a little more information on the Tony Stark/Pepper Potts/Natasha Romanoff love triangle and a never before scene of Whiplash cutting a car in half.
Of course there are very little-to-no finished special effects in the footage but that is to be expected. The meat of the footage and interviews were shot during the Indy car race in Monaco, where Whiplash is introduced to the story, and where director Jon Favreau used one of the biggest green screens I’ve ever seen (and which Screen Rant reported on this past July). During the interview Rob Downey Jr. said this about the action so far:
“We have been blowing things up, and I have been trying to avoid [Whiplash's] laser whips. Come on, it doesn’t get any better than this.”
Enough banter – watch the video then read further for a cool piece of speculation:
What do you think? Cool, right? My geek factor exploded when Whiplash (Mickey Rourke) throws his whip towards Happy Hogan’s (Favreau) limo and cuts the side of it off. According to RDJ, “the car gets cut in half and then in half again. This is where he meets his nemesis, and this big kind of action sequence unfolds on the track…“ (I’ll explain in a moment why I emphasized “unfolds”). It would appear that the action in Iron Man 2 is going to be better than in the previous film and that can only be a good thing. I think Jon favreau has quickly become the most trusted comic book director (sorry Brett Ratner) in Hollywood among fanboys worldwide. Says Favreau during the interview:
“Every day we come to the set we try to discover new ways to make the story interesting and unexpected.”
I don’t think there is anyone that doesn’t believe he is sincere with that comment. I’m still waiting for the Comic-Con footage to be released online, but until then we still have the campy re-enactment footage to get a sense of what happened.
And now for some exclusive speculation…
Did you happen to notice what Pepper Potts (Paltrow) throws out the car window towards Tony Stark during the Whiplash attack scene at 04:29 into the clip? Yes, it’s a fancy looking briefcase – big deal, you say? Well if you’re not a long time Ferrophile (the Iron Man equivalent of a Trekkie) you may not be aware that in the comic book, for many years the armor was collapsible – and Tony Stark carried it with him everywhere in a briefcase.
Now put the aforementioned scene in the context of the above information, and take a look at the enhanced image below. It sure looks a lot like a case that could contain the foldable armor Tony Stark uses from the older comics. Look at these photos and tell us what you think? It would explain how Tony is able to run Whiplash off in Monaco while his armor is back in Malibu.

The mysterious briefcase in a scene from the film

A classic panel from the comic book, and Tony carrying another mysterious case
If that is truly the case (pun intended) then my heart may have just stopped from the sheer power of geekiness! You heard it here first people!
Iron Man 2 stars Robert Downey Jr.(Tony Stark/Iron Man), Gwyneth Paltrow(Pepper Potts), Mickey Rourke(Whiplash), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow), Don Cheadle (Col. James Rhodey/War Machine), Sam Rockwell (Justin Hammer), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury)and Jon Favreau (Happy Hogan).
What did you think of the new behind the scenes footage? Does it get you even more excited for the real thing in a few more months?
Iron Man 2 blasts into theaters May 7th, 2010.

Around the web:

If you guys was closly, When Paltrow throws the briefcase out the window, it breaks when it hits the ground. Lets hope that the collapsible armor isnt that flimsy. Haha
I’m sorry guys – Mcat didn’t mean to come across as a “Richard” – but you and James need to re-think what you consider to be a spoiler. A spoiler is a twist in the movie, something that was previously unknown that by only watching the movie would you find out about.
Example:
Who were the real killers in “A Perfect Getaway”? Answer is a spoiler
Who was the real killer in The Orphan and why were they a
killer? Answer is a spoiler.
Who shows up at the end of Matrix 2 and what is specifically special about them? Answer is a spoiler.
What is so special about Bruce Willis at the end of The Sixth Sense? Answer is a spoiler.
What you guys(Mcat assuming you are a guy sorry if I’m assuming incorrectly)are talking about are not spoilers. Just because you may not have heard of them up to this point doesn’t make them spoilers. it makes them Easter eggs and speculative ones at that. For all we know, Stark is carrying around a highly classified piece of special technology and Whiplash is there to steal it.
Remember, we are watching bits and pieces of scenes out of context so anything could be going on. If you don’t want to know anything about an upcoming film (as is the case for me with Avatar) then my suggestion is do not watch the bits of footage leading up to the release.
Again sorry for acting like a South end of a north bound donkey
What? It was out of left field for Titanic to be brought up, so I HAD to say something about it.
But of course you have to chime in like you think you know what the hell you’re talking about too. Get a life James.
Just kidding with you man, I’m not THAT uptight…
@Drew
Yah, lol, maybe they will CG that part out, haha.
Forget all you punks! I’ve had it!
Just kidding. No worries. IM2 isn’t something I take lightly so I sometimes get worked up over little things.
It’s all rainbows and butterflies now.
man up!
Somebody get cheesed off or something.
Well Paul I think spoilers are different for me. If that case were to become his suit I would think many will be surprised by that. No matter how small, it’s still a surprise.
Wait a minute, Tony Stark is Iron Man?! Where did you get this information? Why wasn’t I informed of this?! The whole movie is blown for me now!
Of course John chimes in like he thinks he knows what the hell he’s talking about too. Get a life John.
LMAO, dammit John, why didn’t you tell me you were going to give me this opportunity, I wouldn’t have WASTED it earlier, geez…
Sorry James for the double, a better opportunity came up, couldn’t pass it up…
@Kahless
Shhhhh!
Vic
That briefcase better be the armor it would make for a cool sequence, Whiplash tearing the rolly apart then Tony is like “Hoe you is destroying my ride, Pepper get me my briefcase.”
then badassery ensues.
If there’s armor in that case then it cant be very powerful. I mean it cant be very powerful. I mean he couldn’t even get in and out of the first suit without serious assistance so…. I think it’s more feasible that its some type of weapon or maybe just the gauntlets but not the whole suit. The suit in a briefcase worked great for the comics but it just wont work in a movie.

Very cool footage. I am so psyched for this movie. I haven’t been this psyched for a movie since, well, since Iron Man came out!! In Favs I Trust (to make a kick-azz movie!)
Man, I just love coming in on the tail end of these ‘discussions’. Who needs soap opera’s? I just come here for the action.
I love this site.
Wow this is great… but I’m also a little bit skeptical about the suitcase armor. Personally, and as pghese has stated above, I don’t think it could work for on film.
Wow… I remember those panels and that era of armor. That would be very cool … if, just if. I’m not holding my breath yet.

I knew that greenscreen set was a racetrack.
Ok that’s enough info for me,,, embargo on all future Iron Man posts. I want to be surprised watching this film,,,
Looking so forward to this movie. The first was great, and now adding SJ to the cast, wishing it were out now.

Wait a minute,
the boat sinks at the end of Titanic?
OMG!
I HAD NO IDEA!
It looked like the case broke open.
so my guess is Tony at least initially gets to one Gauntlet.
The case isn’t meant to break in that scene. That was probably just one take and we won’t see that shot in the end.
M-Cat ,
We dont know the case isnt supposed to break.
the only thing we know for certain is she threw a Red and Gold case out the window of the car and it broke open .
Based on the colors of the case we can assume it was some sort of Stark Tech.
That is all we know.
I just hope they don’t get carried away with the wires for Black Widow. Wire fighting is sooo obvious and fake looking. I understand wires for Iron Man, duh, lol, but hopefully they don’t overdo it for the Black Widow fight scenes…
That is one thing that I have to agree with you on, Ken. I hate HATE obvious wire usage. It makes the fighting look so dumb (i.e. Charlie’s Angels). Like I said though, I trust Favs to make this movie the right way.
maybe Tony doesnt have the whole armor on the suitcase. Maybe this is just another hint to us fans that Favs pays attention to details.
for all we know, Stark might be showing off the repulsor tech to another agencies in Europe via his gaunlets. he doesnt have to hide he is Iron man, so all he would need is his repulsors… conected to his chest RT, it would be a good enough defense when the armor is not present.
whiplash doesnt have a full armor either when he attacks monaco, so Tony doesnt need his neither.
maybe the full face off wll have them both on full suits.
Anyone else dissappointed that of all the excellent actors, and all the highly anticipated characters in the movie, these hack interviewers basically only talked to Gwyneth Paltrow?! I mean, holy hell! RDJ is 5 feet away, but God forbid you miss Paltrow talking about how fun it is to be in little outfits, and how Robert loves coming to set to see HER and Scarlett Johanssen. ScarJo, I’d walk through hot lava to be in a movie with her(mainstream, or less tasteful fare
) But really Paltrow? Thanks for Shakespeare in Love, now please get away from the camera so Mickey Rourke can actually say something. Especially if he has a parokete on his shoulder, or Chihuahua in tow.
I think based on the scenes, pics and interviews that IM2 will be better than the 1st and thats saying something. Im thinking that because the public and not just the fans know the characters and now the armors and action scenes will be even better
I really hope Jon Favreau gets this right as well because Iron Man 1 was awesome. I’m still not 100% sure about the Mickey Rourke/Whiplash thing.
