Iron Man 2: New Behind the Scenes Footage

Sep 25, 2009 by

If you’re a long time Iron Man comic book fan, there MAY be reason for you to geek out even further over ‘Iron Man 2.’

The most anticipated movie of 2010 is, without a doubt, Iron Man 2. Come May of next year, James Cameron’s Avatar will be a distant memory and the only thing fans boys and girls want to see is Iron Man(Robert Downey Jr), Whiplash (Mickey Rourke), War Machine (Don Cheadle) and the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson).

Last night Entertainment Tonight aired a six minute segment that included new behind the scenes footage from the set of Iron Man 2 which included some spectacular crash scenes, a little more information on the Tony Stark/Pepper Potts/Natasha Romanoff love triangle and a never before scene of Whiplash cutting a car in half.

Of course there are very little-to-no finished special effects in the footage but that is to be expected. The meat of the footage and interviews were shot during the Indy car race in Monaco, where Whiplash is introduced to the story, and where director Jon Favreau used one of the biggest green screens I’ve ever seen (and which Screen Rant reported on this past July). During the interview Rob Downey Jr. said this about the action so far:

“We have been blowing things up, and I have been trying to avoid [Whiplash's] laser whips. Come on, it doesn’t get any better than this.”

Enough banter – watch the video then read further for a cool piece of speculation:

What do you think? Cool, right? My geek factor exploded when Whiplash (Mickey Rourke) throws his whip towards Happy Hogan’s (Favreau) limo and cuts the side of it off. According to RDJ, “the car gets cut in half and then in half again. This is where he meets his nemesis, and this big kind of action sequence unfolds on the track… (I’ll explain in a moment why I emphasized “unfolds”). It would appear that the action in Iron Man 2 is going to be better than in the previous film and that can only be a good thing. I think Jon favreau has quickly become the most trusted comic book director (sorry Brett Ratner) in Hollywood among fanboys worldwide. Says Favreau during the interview:

“Every day we come to the set we try to discover new ways to make the story interesting and unexpected.”

I don’t think there is anyone that doesn’t believe he is sincere with that comment. I’m still waiting for the Comic-Con footage to be released online, but until then we still have the campy re-enactment footage to get a sense of what happened.

And now for some exclusive speculation…

Did you happen to notice what Pepper Potts (Paltrow) throws out the car window towards Tony Stark during the Whiplash attack scene at 04:29 into the clip? Yes, it’s a fancy looking briefcase – big deal, you say? Well if you’re not a long time Ferrophile (the Iron Man equivalent of a Trekkie) you may not be aware that in the comic book, for many years the armor was collapsible – and Tony Stark carried it with him everywhere in a briefcase.

Now put the aforementioned scene in the context of the above information, and take a look at the enhanced image below. It sure looks a lot like a case that could contain the foldable armor Tony Stark uses from the older comics. Look at these photos and tell us what you think? It would explain how Tony is able to run Whiplash off in Monaco while his armor is back in Malibu.

Iron Man Still of Case

A classic panel from the comic book, and Tony carrying another mysterious case

If that is truly the case (pun intended) then my heart may have just stopped from the sheer power of geekiness! You heard it here first people!

Iron Man 2 stars Robert Downey Jr.(Tony Stark/Iron Man), Gwyneth Paltrow(Pepper Potts), Mickey Rourke(Whiplash), Scarlett Johansson (Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow), Don Cheadle (Col. James Rhodey/War Machine), Sam Rockwell (Justin Hammer), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury)and Jon Favreau (Happy Hogan).

What did you think of the new behind the scenes footage? Does it get you even more excited for the real thing in a few more months?

Iron Man 2 blasts into theaters May 7th, 2010.

  1. awesome

  2. Forgot to mention…Scarlett Johansson is hot!

  3. The biggest thing thats worrying me is the lack of villains in this movie. 9I dont mean by numbers, i mean by power)

A guy with Whips, Justin Hammer and half a villain half a good girl in Black Widow.

I just dont see any of these people posing any threat whatsoever to War Machine and Ironman.

Okay so Black Widow isnt really bad, the worse shell do is get Tony and Pepper split up.

Whilash has Whips, which is good when Tony is in a racecar without his ironman suit, but once hes got the suit on, Whiplash has no chance. Oh, and did I mention War Machine has a machine gun on each shoulder?

Justin, whats he going to do? Drop Stark Industries stock by 10 points? Oooooohh

I know Whiplash is dangerous, but not to a guy that shoots rockets out of his arms that blows up tanks.

Now- my olny glimmer of hope is that Rourke somehow turns into Crymson Dynamo in the middle of the movie. THAT would be a fair fight.

And one more thing, the suitcase thing was O.K. in the comic books, but its a little cheesy in a movie to have a full suit fit in a briefcase….Im hoping that only the gloves are in there

  4. AWESOME CATCH!! Got me giddy!!!

  5. Nice nod to the armor suitcase. I like that Gwyneth was selling the heaviness of it when she tossed it out.

I think the smaller case is just Downey’s usual case of health supplements. He’s always seen in paparazzi shots carrying a case like that. They probably just slapped an Iron Man 2 sticker on it for kicks.

  6. I just woke up from my geek-olism. :-D That briefcase is probably nano-technology, which was something that wasn’t around during IM early years. It’s going to be a long 9 months. :-)

  7. @James

You forgot War Machine… He’s most likely a “villain” in the sense that he fights Iron Man in this one since you see him working with Justin Hammer in some footage…

  8. I got so excited when I saw this last night. I noticed the case immediately and got all kinds of giddy. Did anyone else notice that the case broke when she dropped it?

  9. Digging the suitcase. Caught it immediately. I’ve been waiting and waiting and waiting for a new nugget or two from IM2. This will only last so long… when do we get a trailer?!?! I need another hit…

Also, The reporter kept referring to Scarlett as ‘Natalia’. Is that an official change or a factual error on the reporter’s part?

  10. your welcome http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlLn-2QQ7t4

  11. Why does Entertainment Tonight ask the most dumbest questions only a Gay guy would want to know? Who gives a crap about how they got in shape, and what the hell they are wearing. Entertainment Tonight is a joke of a show now.

  12. Ken

Nah, the military hires Hammer to help them with weapons, thats what he does, so he helps Rhodey with his armor but War Machine is still in Tony’s side.

Obviously at some point of the movie Justin betrays them or does something villainous

  13. There will be enough enemies in this one. We don’t want another spiderman 3 mess.

  14. And try not to give away the whole movie. It’s nice to be surprised about some things.

  15. Tony always used an attache case for his armor, but I know in later issues (ie, last couple of years), the armor IS the briefcase.

    Heath

  16. IMO Avatar will live on. And you will most likely think so too after its release

  17. I LOVED THE FIRST MOVIE AND I HOPE I WILL LOVE THE NEXT MOVIE!!!AND I HOPE ROBERT DOWNEY JR KEEPS LOOKING GOOD

  18. @Aaron

    Um, wrong article??

  19. Thx for ruining it. Try saying *spoiler* first

  20. @M-Cat

Are you talking about the article? We’re just speculating – how is speculation on what MIGHT be in the film a spoiler?

    Vic

  21. I think the movie footage was great..and WOW Scarlett Johansson is HOT. Also Whiplash doesnt seem to stand a chance against Iron Man and War Machine Well unless War Machine turns out to be somewhat of a villian then maybe..Also Whiplashes first armor is just a prototype armor..I know in the movie he ends up coming up with a better armor in the end of the movie that looks like the Iron Man armor but contains Laser Rod whips and looks way better. Justin Hammer? Well we can’t say too much about him unless he’s the one funding for Rouke’s Final Battle Armor. Black Widow? Just the fact that She’s Really HOT and CUTE.. thats all I could say about her.

  22. @m-Cat – Spoiler on what? That Tony Stark is Iron Man? That Mickey Rourke is Whiplash? That Iron man has a suit or armor and flies? That the Titanic sinks at the end of the film?

    Seriously be specific.

  23. OMG the Titanic sinks???? Geez man, how did I get a spoiler for Titanic on the Iron Man article, thanks Paul… ;-)

  24. Vic

not the article, the guy talking about the suitcase. I never read the comics so i didn’t know about that.

  25. Way to be a smartass Paul when I wasn’t even talking about the article.

  26. Of course Ken chimes in like he thinks he knows what the hell he’s talking about too. Get a life Ken.

  27. @M-Cat

Ah, well I still don’t think I’d consider that a spoiler.

    @Paul

    Dude, be nice. 8)

    Vic

  28. Ironman makes for testy folks I guess.

    It’s Friday people lighten up.

  29. If they specifically show that part in the footage they did it for a reason. It was a nod to comic fans. Obviously, that will be an exciting part of the film and I agree with mcat that it is now somewhat ruined for me. Thx goes out to the other James!
