To no surprise, it has been confirmed by writer Justin Theroux that Iron Man 2 will feature a big “Easter Egg” for the fans. While the press, including Screen Rant headmaster Vic Holtreman, saw the movie this week, the version they were witness to did not include this scene.

The one thing we do know is that it’ll take place after the credits, so now you know to stick around for it if you weren’t going to anyway. While Theroux wouldn’t reveal any details, we do have the Iron Man 2 rumor that popped up last week which hinted at what this Easter egg may be about: The Avengers.

“A 100% trusted source (NOT from the production/distribution, but very familiar with the movie) confirmed us today that there will be an easter egg in IM2. It’s an extra scene, just like the one in the first movie, after the end credits. We are able to tell you what’s about! It’s a scene about… Captain America and Thor! Maybe this doesn’t seem a big reveal, but it’s nice to have a confirmation.”

This is a similar situation to what happened in 2008 when rumors hit the web that Samuel L. Jackson would be playing Nick Fury in Iron Man. The press saw the movie early and he wasn’t in it so it seemed those rumors were false… that is, until its theatrical release when Fury did show up. It was intentionally left out of the Press screening as to not have the info leak.

It’s obvious that Iron Man 2 would feature a similar scene and it’s become expected ever since both Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk included scenes pointing to The Avengers. If it didn’t, fans would actually be disappointed and this just goes to show how much Iron Man 2 has to live up to with increasingly high expectations.

This leaves room for some fun speculation. Would the Easter egg scene simply reference other characters to be featured in The Avengers? Will it actually present a cameo of Chris Hemsworth as Thor? Will it depict Ed Norton as Bruce Banner, confirming that he’ll be in The Avengers? Will it reveal a character we didn’t expect like Ant-Man or Hawkeye?

There are a lot of possibilities, but we at least know it’ll have to do with The Avengers. I expect it’ll have to do with Thor but I’d love for it to be a cameo of Ed Norton. Over the last year there have been a lot of rumors about The Hulk appearing in Iron Man 2 but Norton shot them down and still isn’t an official part of The Avengers. On top of that, director Jon Favreau revealed that Iron Man 2 takes place before The Incredible Hulk so that hinders the possibility as well.

After all, The Avengers starts production in February and we also know Marvel Studios is planning on making movies based on their more obscure heroes so there’s a lot of potential for cross-overs.

What would you like to see from the Iron Man 2 Easter egg?

Directed by Jon Favreau and written by Justin Theroux, Iron Man 2 stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Jon Favreau, Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Garry Shandling, John Slattery, Kate Mara, Clark Gregg and Olivia Munn.

Iron Man 2 opens May 7, 2010, Thor opens May 5, 2011, The First Avenger: Captain America hits July 22, 2011 and The Avengers is scheduled to debut May 4, 2012.
