The Iron Giant was pretty much a box office flop when it was released in August of 1999. However, the animated tale of a young boy who befriends a giant alien robot in the small-town Maine of the 1950s achieved a cult following almost immediately- one that’s only grown since.

The film, directed by future The Incredibles and Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol director Brad Bird, came out on DVD a few months after its theatrical release, and a special edition followed in 2004, before The Iron Giant returned to theaters with an extended and remastered “Signature Edition” last year. And now, the film is finally headed out on Blu-ray disc for the first time, this fall.

As reported by Blu-ray.com, the Ultimate Collector’s Edition Blu-ray disc of The Iron Giant will arrive in stores September 6. When he was asked about the topic on Twitter nearly two years ago, Bird said that he had been in talks with Warner Bros. about a Blu-ray release – and that while the studio had been pushing for a “bare bones” release, Bird said “I want better.”

It appears Bird got his wish. The release, a DVD/Blu-ray/digital combo pack, will include quite a lot for Iron Giant fans to enjoy: Both the 1999 and 2015 cuts of the film;  an all-new documentary called “The Giant’s Dream”;   a separate making-of feature hosted by Vin Diesel, who voiced the Giant; commentaries by Bird, Head of Animation Tony Fucile, Story Department Head Jeff Lynch and Giant Animation Supervisor Steven Markowski, as well as deleted scenes, the original opening sequences and featurettes. Also included are a 32-page book, five Mondo art cards, a letter from the director and a collectable Iron Giant figurine.

The news is welcome for Iron Giant fans. This tale of friendship set among Cold War hysteria  is a beloved, beautiful film, one that’s frequently been a subject of essays and appreciations in the years since its release; it even made our recent list of “movies that men are allowed to cry at.” I recently showed The Iron Giant to my young children, who loved it.

The Blu-ray of The Iron Giant may not be a huge seller. But the movie unquestionably has a passionate base of fans, eager to experience the film – and likely cry their eyes out all over again.

The Iron Giant Ultimate Collector’s Edition Blu-ray comes out September 6th, 2016.
