Marvel’s Defenders keep on killing it. After the exciting debut of Luke Cage carried on the gritty tradition of Daredevil and Jessica Jones, the next Netflix sagas are in production, including The Punisher and, of course, the Kung Fu superhero adventures of Iron Fist. The martial arts-heavy series will debut a new gaggle of characters, including the title character a.k.a. Danny Rand (Finn Jones) and his butt-kicking cohort Colleen Wing (Jessica Henwick).
Henwick is no stranger to action-packed roles, though. She’s already played an X-Wing pilot in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens and Nymeria Sand on Game of Thrones – where she worked alongside fellow Iron Fist cast mate Jones.
While attending the worldwide debut of Doctor Strange, Henwick spoke about her co-audition with Jones, as well as divulging more about her Colleen Wing. In the interview, she gave fans a preview of how her martial arts instructor character interconnects with the overall plot, saying:
“I play Colleen Wing, who is a badass by all accounts…She runs a dojo in New York and she’s just a hustler. She’s trying to survive and live when Danny Rand, who is the Iron Fist, comes over and kind of ruins her life, messes everything up. And she’s just so much fun to play, such a pleasure, so I really hope the fans connect with her. I mean, we dropped our trailer at New York Comic Con, and people went insane. So I hope we fulfill those expectations.”
Of course, diehard comic fans already have some idea of what to expect from Henwick’s character. Colleen Wing was born in the mountains of Japan and taught the ways of the samurai by her maternal grandfather Kenji Ozawa. She later met Iron Fist and made her way into the Marvel Universe in general, working alongside Spider-Man, the X-Men and numerous others along the way. Overall, it sounds as though Netflix’s variation will remain fairly true to character, but allow for some wiggle room for Henwick. She said:
“Luckily I don’t think that the wider public know much about [Colleen Wing], just the comic book fans, so I felt free to explore her and bring something that I think is quite special to the role.”
With its emphasis on more real world-based super-heroics, Iron Fist will continue the overall vibe of the Netflix’s Defenders lineup. Wing, alongside other characters like Misty Knight (who became her best friend and partner in the Daughters of the Dragon comic) exemplify the non-super-powered elements that ground the series closer to reality than Marvel’s big screen offerings generally skew. In her own right, Colleen Wing had quite a few impressive adventures in the Marvel world. Hopefully, she’ll also have the opportunity to reprise her P.I. firm with Misty Knight at some point in the series, since Colleen has always been a fascinating character and a true “badass” in the best MCU sense of the word.
Daredevil season 1 & 2, Jessica Jones season 1, and Luke Cage season 1 are now available on Netflix. Iron Fist season 1 arrives on March 17th, 2017. The Defenders and The Punisher arrive in 2017. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2 and Daredevil season 3 have not yet been announced.
