Will The iPhone 4 Change Filmmaking?

iPhone 4 video movies filmmaking

Our brothers at Game Rant followed the Apple Keynote WWDC 2010 very closely, but one feature has us personally intrigued here at Screen Rant. Apple recently announced the new iPhone 4 includes recording and editing capabilities, and while the raw features simply allow for trimming footage, an iMovie application provides the opportunity to edit films with music and transitions.

iMovie is basic editing software, but feature films have been made using it before. Take Jackass for instance, which was allegedly edited on iMovie. It is a bit ridiculous to imagine an entire film could be made solely on the iPhone, but the phone’s accessibility in terms of filming and editing on one device gives amateur filmmakers even more of an opportunity to express creativity.

The new iPhone offers thousands of dollars worth of equipment in a handheld device, all for the $199 or $299 price tag of the phone, with only and additional $4.99 for the iMovie application. At 720p and 30fps, the camera provides superior quality to any of its predecessors. 10 hours of battery life during video use proves you can last longer with the iPhone than a thousand dollar camera.

The reason we present this concept to you is to incite some discussion about the future of filmmaking. The box office success of micro-budget films like Paranormal Activity has proven financial success is not limited to big, action bonanzas. Audiences flock to creativity and the bigger the obstacles, the more interesting the result becomes.

It isn’t so absurd to think an entire movie could be filmed on the iPhone. Take away the editing aspect of things and you’ve got all you need – a lens; camera type should be irrelevant in the creative process of great storytelling. Some of the most viewed videos on YouTube, while not feature films, were caught on awful camera phones. It just goes to show that at the end of the day, people want to be entertained, not told what equipment was used to make a film.

The Internet has changed the way films are presented and On Demand has enhanced the immediacy of home video. Budgets have gotten bigger, yet the ways we watch films have gotten smaller. Movie theaters struggle to keep up with the public’s desire to be entertained on handheld devices, but so far, the film industry has maintained its big production status.

Sooner or later, something has to come along and change the way movies are made. Sure, 3D has done that to an extent – but will the new iPhone give everybody with a handheld device the chance to be a part of the big industry? It will at least provide them the opportunity to try…

What do you think about the probability of a movie filmed entirely on the iPhone one day getting a widespread release? Will anybody even try? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

  1. of course, now we will have films that are not only “shaky-cam” but we will ALSO get to hear whoever the film-maker was yakking with on the line at the time!
    I can see the “reality-style” possibilities…

quick glimpses of monstrous body parts
    flashes of mayhem and destruction
the head of the Statue of Liberty comes flying down the road
and all this while the iPhone’s “live” telephone connection is still on:
“Marvin? Marvin, when are you going to come and visit? You missed your bubby’s birthday, and Aunt Zelda says you weren’t at Schlomo’s bar-mitzvah, and what IS all that noise? are you there, Marvin?…”

    • I have launched the Worlds First iPhone Film Festival at http://www.iPhoneFF.com and I have been getting allot of great films. So visit to watch some great film and submit your films.

  2. It’s completely possible, with a resolution of 720p recording, it’s totally possible. I am still on the edge, whether to get this, or just wait it out with my 3gs until next year, but the more I think about it, the more I want the new one, now I can make my own movies with just my phone!

  3. Bah Apple sucks! Down with the content controlling machina!

OK so now we can make “movies” using the iPhone and they are in 720p but what about zoom, low-light exposure, far distance audio, recording audio in a crowded room, ambient noise, and other situations that affect REAL cameras?

This is a phone and nothing more. Trying to turn it into a movie making device is a bit ridiculous IMHO.

  4. I don’t get this. People spend insane amounts buying gigant televisions with the greatest possible resolution and bitch about what cables give the cleanest possible signal… and then they film their kids school play or whatnot using cheap chinese electronics which makes the Zaptruder film look like a masterpiece of cinematography.

If you want a camera, buy a camera. They are not that expensive.

  5. There’s a professional community forum where we’re already joking about this:

    http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/1090034

Basically, we think it’s ridiculous to give any credit to the thought that this will produce feature-lengths. As many toys that hint at professionalism companies can give the public, the constant standard of professional knowledge and production values will remain. However, what it does get us is every half-wit thinking he’s Spielberg or Nolan.

  6. The sheep love the iphone.

  7. Yay the “I blindly hate Apple and the Iphone” club is here.

  8. Baah,,,

  9. Iphones biggest drawback besides the touch screen is its battery life.

Rather then focusing on all kinds of lame ars apps, they should provide a longer lasting battery.

If anyone going to shoot a porno, with their iphone, and let’s get real here. Of course there going to shoot porn.

There going to have to provide an outlet to constantly provide power to their Panavision iphone.

Small cameraphone, plugging into my car outlet makes for one retarded looking film crew!!!!!

  10. They have increased their batterey life it would film porn just fine… I’m truly impressed and sorry for u if u last longer than 10 hours. The batterey life increases with every new phone.

  11. I would also like to add that the touch screen on the iPhone is great it’s among the best touch screens.

  12. Yeah that’s a problem I have with the iphone is that you can’t upgrade the battery. You have to save your data, through a PC or offsite server. Then (as planned) buy a new iphone. Download your data, rinse and repeat every year or so.

If I had money to burn and gave a crap about smearing my sweat over a dirty touch screen, I guess its great.

I’ve had several (2) blackberries that have lasted for over 3 years each and counting. I have spare batteries and use the other one as a backup.

Not having the ability to take out the battery is a deal breaker on a smartphone. You give up your security when you can’t remove the battery.
    But hey whatever,,,

  13. LMAO, you guys are kidding right? I’ll say no more given the rabid apple fanboyism that’s so popular now…

  14. damn freakin yuppies and their lame gadgets

  15. Every year? I hope you meant that to be an exaggeration. A new phone comes out every year, but the phone doesn’t die every year. Had my phone for a little over a year now. My best friend has had the same phone for a little over 2 years. Everyone I know with an Iphone with the exception of one person has had their phone longer than one year.

  16. Too bad these comments have degenerated into ego based, camp wars.
Beyond your opinions on both sides the question remains: Will a movie, or many “noteworthy” movies, be made on Iphone 4?
And when I say noteworthy I don’t mean Spielberg ( whatever) noteworthy and not even ”professional community” noteworthy but just artistically or anthropologically revelant. Rememberthe Fisher Price PXL toy camera?
Those of you old enough to pee standing up will remember how it’s use as a serious filmaking tool was laughed at by ” professionals”. Just read it’s wiki now.
It’s not just about the tools.Just thought i’d help us remember that filmaking is not just a slick billion dollar industry, it’s an artform.Art.
Isnt that what it’s supposed to be about…

  17. Of course I meant relevant ;-) oops should have re-read myself more carefully

  18. The accessibility of technology has democratized filmmaking in a pretty inspiring way – creativity and expression are abounding in all kinds of permutations. However, the iPhone will not give anyone the chance to be part of the big industry anymore than the home video camera did. It’s possible to credit home video cameras with the birth of indy cinema, but that was soon co-opted by the studios becasue they have the financial power to effect strong marketing campaigns. iPhone and other devices like the Flip may popularize microcinema, but the one thing studios know how to do is marketing (see Paranormal), and marketing is the key to financially viable films on any budget or tech level. So where’s the Movie Marketing App?

  19. The flak iphone4 is copping here is a tad undeserved I think. I’m sure few if any people really look at this device as an opportunity to take on Hollywood. But with a reasonable camera, editor, viewer and online publisher in your pocket as part of the phone you would ordinarily carry all the time anyway, you can’t deny the geeky gadgetry step forward this is.

How far ‘filmmakers’ are able to take these features in this format is a complete unknown. I’m just looking forward to average joe handycam discovering the wonders of ‘editing’ and how they can trim out all the junk from their youtube clips.

  20. Sounds like Apple has been having a rough go at it with this release. I wonder if they pushed it to beat the competition to the market – or if ATT pushed it before a VZ deal is announced

  21. Yeah! iPhone 4 is a great tool for flourishing Filmmakers. Thats why I decided to found the first iPhone Video Contest. FREE Submission! Deadline Dec 20, 2010.

I’m filmmaker and my idea is to promote digital filmmaking through the mobile devices. Somebody said: “the best camera is the one available at that time” is not about the equipment is about your vision, story and creativity.

On this occasion I will start the video contest with the iPhones, for the second season of this contest I’ll accept submissions from other cellphones as Droid, Evo, Epic Samsung 4G and many others.

Please visite my website and be part of this new way of filmmaking.

  23. Shooting video on the iPhone 4 is so handy. It’s great to know that you have a high def video camera sitting in your pocket where ever you go and it has the potential of filming some great stuff.

Here’s a great example of what you can do:
