Christopher Nolan looked to make it six #1 openings in a row at the box office this weekend, but a cuddly robot name Baymax denied the Dark Knight director.
In at number 1 is Big Hero 6 (read our review) with $56.2 million. Disney does it once again, fighting off stiff competition to stake its claim on the top spot.
With Pixar out of the picture this year, Big Hero 6 had to step in and do all of the earning for Disney Animation and it preformed admirably. And even though it may not be the next Frozen, the film surely secured a future on Disney's slate.
Coming in right behind Big Hero 6 is Interstellar (read our review) with $50 million. Projections were slightly higher for Christopher Nolan's latest, but it appears a lengthy run time and an out there (literally) premise didn't hold as much weight with audiences.
That being said, Interstellar's debut is nothing to scoff at either, and for those very same reasons. The fact that Nolan can get a $50M opening domestic and an additional $80M international from a movie this ambitious is a testament to his appeal as a filmmaker. It also doesn't hurt to have a few Oscar winners in your back pocket.
Leaping back up to number 3 is Gone Girl with $6.1 million. With most of the remaining top 10 struggling to hold serve, Gone Girl made its play for third place. It may not hold the title for long, but with $145 million so far Gone Girl is the fall's top earner.
Ouija is the number 4 film this weekend with $6 million. Without the Halloween holiday to boost its profile, Ouija lost any of its appeal. But, the film has made a solid $43 million, which is nothing to be ashamed about.
Rounding out the top 5 is film is St. Vincent with $5.7 million. The Bill Murray comedy is still doing very well, even as it continues to expand, and is up to $27 million after five weeks.
In at number 6 is Nightcrawler with $5.51 million. Last weekend's number two film didn't hold very well considering the positive word of mouth. But, with $19 million so far, the film is doing just fine for an dark indie-esque feature.
The number 7 film is Fury with $5.5 million, bringing its domestic total up to $69 million. Obviously there's still a ways to go for the film to turn a profit, but Fury has surpassed its $68M production budget.
John Wick falls to number 8 this weekend with $4 million. Obviously, we expected more from the Keanu Reeves led action flick given the strong reviews, but apparently audiences couldn't be bothered to check this one out. So far, John Wick has grossed $34 million.
Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day comes in at number 9 with $3.4 million. The family friendly adaptation is now up to $59 million after five weeks. Not bad at all.
Rounding out the top 10 is The Book of Life with $2.8 million, which brings its domestic gross up to $45 million. Although 20th Century Fox is likely proud of the film's performance all things considered, we should point out that Big Hero 6 made more in three days than Book of Life has made in four weeks.
