The new international trailer for James Cameron’s long-awaited 3D “masterpiece,” Avatar, has made its way online and you can check it out here. It’s in English but there are non-English subtitles. The official release of the domestic version happens tomorrow morning at 10:00am pacific time.

No more talking, check out these three-and-a-half minutes of awesome after the jump.

Not everyone was 100% sold from the first trailer for Avatar, but perhaps this trailer may sway those skeptics over. This promo focuses on more of the human element and story structure which will help connect with mainstream moviegoing audiences.

EPIC!

I’m biased because I love James Cameron’s previous works and because I was treated to nearly half an hour of footage while at San Diego Comic-Con. So, needless to say, I’m very pumped for this flick. This trailer does however, give away a lot of the film’s story and setup, and I imagine they had to reveal as much in such a lengthy trailer because a lot of regular folks (who don’t read Screen Rant) simply had no idea what the film is about.

After seeing this, they sure as hell do now. Don’t fret if you feel spoiled, I expect there’s some unexpected twists and turns from Avatar waiting us because Cameron emphasized that in the marketing, they’d be saving a lot back for the actual theatrical release.

Did any of you get that 300 vibe from Sam Worthington’s character towards the end?

What do you think of the new footage?

Avatar stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez and Giovanni Ribisi. It opens December 18, 2009 and we’ll be there.

  1. Best looking video game I EVER saw. Amazing!

    It’s a movie?…Really?

  2. I know you’re all going lollypops over this film and can’t wait to hand Cameron your cash but…I can’t be the only one that noticed the ‘Dance’s With Wolves’ story line.

Goes to fight them, joins them, falls in love with one of them, ends up fighting for them.

  3. @JessSayin

Yes, that is a valid complaint. At least based on the trailer while it looks amazing visually, the story does seem rather simplistic.

On the other hand that might be key to it making gazillions of dollars. 8)

problem with that is there are about 30 movies out there with stories based on that. Anymore, it’s not the originality of the story it’s how it’s told. And we all know Cameron knows how to tell a story.

  5. JessSayin says: “only one that noticed the ‘Dance’s With Wolves’ story line.”

Don’t forget Tecumseh! :) A fine author once said that the real challenge is to “make it new!” The myths, metaphors, legends, fables are continually reused, but it’s how well you can bury them into the story that’s important. So while yes it’s very difficult to find a story that we can’t find a common ID for, the best hide and dress those IDs well. It takes more than special effects to do that, it takes very good story telling. The story looks thin because it’s so easy to ID. They didn’t work hard enough on it.

  6. All I have to say is WOW!!!!!!!!

  7. That was GREAT but the music plays a huge part in selling this trailer..

  8. so this movie is about the U.S. getting something valuable like “oil” from someone else’s land- hmm sounds familiar… so how is this EPIC???

  9. @Vision

    “so how is this EPIC???”

Going to another planet, waging war on it’s natives, big battles, huge scope…

Sorry, what’s your definition of epic.

  10. @the old man, Touche’
@Vic, You’re absolutely right. Worked for New Line Cinema when they made, ‘Golden Compass’

I just can’t forget the end of ‘The Abyss’ when Cameron chose Deus Ex Machina over good script writing when he had them say,
    “We should be dead”
“Yeah, they must have done somthin’ to us”

Sorry guys, knock yourself out but I’m just not feeling the magic. In fact, I’m gonna go play some Crysis that has the same if not better graphics than this movie.

  11. @JessSayin

Knowing how the aliens removed the effects of the bends on the crew really wouldn’t mean anything at that point in the story. Have you seen the director’s cut of the Abyss? Ending makes MUCH more sense.

    Vic

  12. @ Vic

I haven’t seen that version or even knew it existed..I will definitely check it out. Thanks

  13. Um, didn’t Cameron himself say that part of the story is inspired by Dances With Wolves? I mean, that “observation” isn’t really that smart if it’s already established. But good job making it appear as if you figured it all out by yourself…

  14. @greenknight

And if you’ve never seen the director’s cut of Cameron’s Aliens you should seek that one out as well.

    Vic

  15. @ Vic or anyone else

do you know if the “special edition” of The Abyss is the director’s cut version? It doesn’t show the differences between the versions so I can’t tell.

  16. @m-cat

Yes, I believe the special edition is with all the deleted scenes put back in, which should be the director’s cut. I would mention the differences but most of it is part of the ending so…

  17. Cool, thanks Ken!

  18. Nahhh!!! Nothing original, the same and old history of the natives vs the new civilization… Just FX!!

  19. Got an e-mail from Amazon.com today letting me know that I can pre-order James Horner’s score for Avatar.

During my chats with people recently, I’ve heard several folks attempting to compare Avatar to Titanic (don’t know how you can compare the two), so keeping this in mind, I hope the orchestral score won’t be really sappy, and Celine Dion won’t be singing over the closing credits. ;)

  20. @Vic, I only saw the version I paid the $$ for at The Cinedomes in Orange, CA. (May they rest in peace)

I remember sitting in The Abyss yelling out loud, “Don’t do this to me!” as my friends laughed at me. The part was when Ed Harris’ character was stuck on the bottom and the alien came up and gave him (and us) the E.T. handshake.

As ground breaking as that film was the theatrical version only got worse and worse. You’re right, the tidal waves in the directors cut helped immensely.

I did like the Aliens director cut. SWEET!

  21. @Ken J,
Thanks! I didn’t know James Cameron posted on this site. I’ll try and be better at checking out ALL the comments before posting and observations in the future.

Especially since I don’t make it a habit of following every comment of his elsewhere.

  22. Outstanding..

  23. I feel like I’ve seen this film before, as when it was called “Dances with Wolves”.

I have to admit, the special effects are mightily impressive, enough so that I may actually check it out when it comes out, but I’m fully prepared for a highly slanted point of view akin to “western civilization bad, native tree huggers good”. It’s probably going to be rediculously reductive and simplistic in its narrative point, and I can only hope that the extremely prodigious work on sfx and immersion in a fictional landsacape make up for it.

This is one of those films I’d be more interested in seeing for its technical achievement than its narrative accomplishments. Does anybody here really wonder how the protagonist’s dilemma is going to work out? This set-up only has a few standard outcomes, and they’re being telegraphed way ahead of the release date.

Before, I only suspected it, but this pretty much confirms it.

  24. Ken,

Even if Cameron admitted Dances with Wolves was an inspiration for him in Avatar, unless he adds his own personal take on that type of story, or adds something to it, like a few touches of gray mixed in with the black and white portrayals, then he’s just repeating what we’re all familiar with already. Retreading over exactly the same ground. That is the unfortunate feeling I get from the trailers, that nothing new is being done narratively, for all the great sfx work on display.

That, and the dialog was a bit ham-fisted as well.

  25. Spielberg eat your heart out, Cameron is setting a new standard

  26. Ken and Vic

watched the director’s cut of The Abyss earlier and can’t believe how much of a difference the additional footage makes. I feel cheated that I never saw that version before and wonder how many other movies have left out footage for the theatrical releases. Why couldn’t they cut out other parts to leave the ending intact? Very odd to me.

  27. I was excited about this film considerably before seeing any trailers, simply because I admire James Cameron’s work.

I watched this trailer, and I can honestly say that my heart was POUNDING towards the end!

Now, I am VERY excited about this film.

  28. OMG!!! That was amazing!! Sooooooo looking forward to it even if it has Dances w/ Wolves written all over it. If the movie is good who cares. I for one will be seeing it. I loved Dances w/ Wolves… still do.

  29. Seriously tell me something that Cameron has done that wasnt compelling and interesting, he is one of the greatest director’s out there. He is a visionary. Cant F*ing wait for this film.
