Horror continues its 2013 dominance in this weekend's box office, as one of the genre's most talented directors matches a unique record.

Coming in at number 1 is Insidious: Chapter 2 (read our review) with a massive $41 million, more than triple the first film's $13 million debut. Not only is Insidious: Chapter 2 another big success for director James Wan, it's his second $40 million+ opening weekend of 2013 – the other being The Conjuring ($41.8M).

While the near perfect timing of Friday the 13th likely helped Insidious 2 pull in big numbers on Friday, it's hard to overlook the power of the horror film this year. If James Wan is stepping away from horror films for good, he's leaving the genre on a high note.

This weekend's other new release, The Family (read our review), opened in the number 2 spot with $14.5 million. The Family certainly had a lot going for it – a star-studded cast, director Luc Besson, and a unique story – but it was no match for Insidious. That being said, The Family's $14M opening is Luc Besson's second best, behind The Fifth Element's $17 million.

Robert De Niro in The Family

Last week's top film, Riddick, comes in at number 3 with $7 million. With $31 million thus far, this third film in the series has a good shot of making back its $38 million budget and passing Pitch Black's domestic total of $39 million. Whether it will surpass Chronicles of Riddick's $57 million total, however, is unclear at this point.

In at number 4 is Lee Daniels' The Butler with $5.5 million. After 5 weeks in theaters, this potential Oscar contender has just barely crossed the $100 million mark.

Rounding out the top 5 is We're the Millers with $5.4 million. With $131 million total, the film is now the highest grossing original R-rated comedy released in August - not much to brag about until you consider the list includes films like The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Superbad.

Instructions Not Included comes in at number 6 with $4.2 million, which brings its domestic total up to $26 million. LionsGate and their Pantelion label are likely very pleased with the performance of this film, which came seemingly out of nowhere.

Dusty Crophopper in Planes (Review)

The number 7 film this weekend is Disney's Planes with $3 million. Planes won't hit the type of numbers we are used to seeing from Disney and Pixar, but with $82 million after 6 weeks it's still a success.

Coming in at number 8 is One Direction: This is Us with $2.4 million. Now at $26 million, This is Us ranks number 4 among all music concert films, but is well behind the number 3 film, Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds ($65 million).

In at number 9 is Elysium with $2 million. The film is inching closer to its $115 million budget, but $88 million after 6 weeks is not where most expected Elysium would end up.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is the number 10 film this weekend with $1.8 million. The film is now up to $62 million in domestic grosses.
